Tyler’s Tribe Breezes Toward Oaklawn’s Bachelor

Iowa-bred star Tyler's Tribe, under regular rider Kylee Jordan, worked an easy three furlongs Saturday morning at Oaklawn in advance of the $150,000 Bachelor Stakes April 29. The six-furlong race is for 3-year-olds.

Tyler's Tribe, who breezed alone over a fast track, covered the distance in :37.60 and galloped out a half-mile :50.20. Tyler's Tribe will be returning to a sprint after finishing a leg-weary sixth in his 3-year-old and two-turn debut in a March 30 allowance at Oaklawn.

“He was knocked out after that last race,” co-owner/trainer Tim Martin said following Saturday's work. “He had his head in the dirt for a few days. I guess the mile kind of did him in.”

Tyler's Tribe, by Sharp Azteca, received a brief break following the March 30 race after being shipped to Martin's nearby training center in Royal. Martin said the gelding returned to Oaklawn several days ago to continue preparations for the Bachelor. Saturday's work was the first for Tyler's Tribe since he zipped five furlongs in :59.40 March 23 – the fastest of 20 recorded at the distance that morning.

“Just an easy three-eighths today,” Martin said. “He scoped clean.”

Tyler's Tribe bled in his final two starts last year, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland and Advent Stakes Dec. 9 at Oaklawn. Tyler's Tribe was eased in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and finished third in the Advent.

Tyler's Tribe won his first five career starts, including four stakes, by a combined 59¾ front-running lengths at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.

Advent winner Count de Monet is also pointing for the Bachelor, trainer Tom Swearingen said Saturday morning. The Bachelor closed with 22 nominations.

Post positions for the Bachelor and the inaugural $150,000 Dig a Diamond Stakes will be drawn Monday. The Dig a Diamond, for older fillies and mares at 1 mile, is also April 29.

Mage, Reincarnate Top Quiet Day on the Derby Worktab

Mage (Good Magic), runner-up to champion and likely GI Kentucky Derby favorite Forte (Violence) in the GI Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park Apr. 1, breezed six furlongs in an easy 1:14.78 in what is likely to be his final serious piece of work ahead of the Run for the Roses May 6.

“He worked good. We liked what we say. Everything is going to plan, thank God,” said Gustavo Delgado, Jr., assistant to his father Gustavo who trains the son of former 'TDN Rising Star' Puca (Big Brown) for an ownership group that includes OGMA Investments, LLC, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing LLC and CMNWLTH.

A $235,000 Keeneland September yearling and $290,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old in training acquisition, Mage belied odds of 11-1 to graduate by an impressive 3 3/4 lengths in a seven-furlong maiden Jan. 28 and gave an excellent account of himself when fourth behind Forte in the GII Fountain of Youth S. Mar. 4. Mage hit the front in the final furlong of the Florida Derby after enduring a tough trip and clung on well for second, beaten a length. The chestnut, bred by Robert Clay's Grandview Equine, ships to Kentucky Apr. 23.

“We just want him to get to know the track. We don't expect to do very much there, fitness-wise,” Delgado, Jr. said. “He should be ready after this work. Every day is crucial. We'll take it day by day, but we like the position we're in right now.”

At Santa Anita Saturday morning, trainer Tim Yakteen sent out GIII Sham S. winner Reincarnate (Good Magic) to work five-eighths of a mile. Breezing inside of his 5-year-old stablemate Westward Look (Vancouver {Aus}), the $775,000 Keeneland September graduate galloped under a strong hold after breaking off just inside the 5 1/2-furlong pole and pulled readily clear of his company from two furlongs out to stop the clock in 1:01 flat (22/43). He was asked to work past the wire and into the turn and was just urged along mildly to finish up nearing the six-furlong start.

Since winning the Sham in early January, Reincarnate cemented his Derby berth with third-place efforts–albeit accomplished in different fashion–in a sloppy renewal of the GII Rebel S. Feb. 25 and the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 1.

Asmussen Ties Holthus As Oaklawn’s Winningest Trainer

Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen tied the late Bob Holthus as Oaklawn's all-time winningest trainer when Tapicita ($7) broke her maiden by 4½ lengths in Friday's second race.

Tapicita represented the 867th Oaklawn victory overall for Asmussen and his 47th at the 2022-2023 meeting that began Dec. 9. Asmussen had eight chances on the remainder of Friday's card to break the record, but his best finish was second with Speakinofthedevil in the fourth race.

Asmussen had 13 horses entered Saturday at Oaklawn and four Sunday. Asmussen has already collected a record 12 Oaklawn training titles and entered Saturday with a record 101 career stakes victories in Hot Springs after winning the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) with Clairiere and the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) with Skelly. Both races were April 15. Asmussen's first Oaklawn victory came in 1996.

Asmussen's son, Keith, rode Calumet Farm homebred Tapicita, a 3-year-old daughter of Mucho Macho Man.

Florida Derby Runner-Up Mage Breezes At Gulfstream For Kentucky Derby, To Ship To Churchill Downs Sunday

Curlin Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Mage breezed six furlongs in 1:14.78 Saturday morning at Gulfstream Park while prepping for a scheduled start in the May 6 Kentucky Derby (G1).

The lightly raced son of Good Magic, trained by Gustavo Delgado and owned by OGMA Investments LLC, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing LLC, and CMNWLTH, galloped out a mile.

“He worked good. We liked what we saw. Everything is going to plan, Thank God,” said assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr.

A jockey has yet to be named to ride Mage in the Derby.

Mage, a $290,000 purchase at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds-in-Training sale, is scheduled to ship Sunday to Churchill Downs to finish his preparation for a run in the Kentucky Derby.

“We just want him to get to know the track. We don't expect to do very much there, fitness-wise,” the younger Delgado said. “He should be ready after this work. Every day is crucial. We'll take it day by day, but we like the position we're in right now.”

Making only his third career start in the Florida Derby, Mage made a sweeping move from 12th to take the lead at the top of the stretch to get the jump on heavily favored Forte, but the Todd Pletcher trainee kicked into overdrive in stretch to pull out the victory by a length.

Mage turned in an eye-catching debut at Gulfstream Jan. 28 while romping to a 3¾-length victory in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race. He subsequently showed a lot of grit while finishing fourth behind Forte in the Fountain of Youth (G2), in which he experienced gate trouble, bumping and a wide trip.

Mage, who collected 40 points for his runner-up Florida Derby finish and 10 points for his game effort in the Fountain of Youth, sits 16th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, assuring the Kentucky-bred colt a stall in the starting gate for the first leg of the 2023 Triple Crown at Churchill Downs.
