Red Route One Stamps His Preakness Ticket With Victory In Bath House Row S.

While currently ranked 28th in points and on the outside looking in for the GI Kentucky Derby, Red Route One punched his ticket to the second jewel of the Triple Crown with a win Saturday in the Bath House Row S.

After bursting onto the scene with a third to Derby favorite Forte (Violence) in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity last fall, Red Route One earned a pair of placings in both the GIII Southwest S. and the GII Rebel S. before faltering to sixth when last spotted in the GI Arkansas Derby. Racing with Lasix for the first time Saturday, the chestnut put his typical running style into action, breaking nicely but falling back to trail the field as Victory Formation paced them through a :22.87 opening quarter. Under an easy ride from eighth, he started to pick up the bridle into the far turn and tipped out to carry his momentum past the furlong pole. Tapit Shoes was game to the inside but Red Route One got the better bob to take the narrow win on the wire.

Out of a full-sister to champion 3-year-old filly Untapable, Red Route One is also out of a half to GISW Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}). Red House has not produced a foal or been reported bred since Red Route One. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Brickyard Ride Powers Gate To Wire For Kona Gold Repeat

With a recent race under his belt, California-bred Brickyard Ride demonstrated his customary speed and considerable class on Saturday at Santa Anita, as he held off a determined Anarchist late to take the $100,000 Kona Gold Stakes (G3) while becoming only the second horse to register repeat victories in the 38-year history of the race.

Owned and bred by Alfred Pais, trained by Craig Lewis, and ridden by Juan Hernandez, Brickyard Ride won by a half length and covered 6½ furlongs in 1:15.84.

Quick from the gate but anything but lonely on the lead, Brickyard Ride was pressed to the far turn by a threesome comprised of Anarchist, Armagnac, and Positivity. Approaching the three furlong pole, Brickyard Ride opened up by 1 1/2 lengths from Anarchist, and that proved to perhaps be the winning move as the son of Clubhouse Ride was all-out late to prevail as Anarchist was steadily closing the gap for second.

“He made a really good move around the three eighths,” said Hernandez. “I felt the pace was really hot, these guys didn't want to leave me alone. Of course, everybody was trying to win the race, like me. Around the three eighths, he picked it up and that was the signal that he was ready to run. I went ahead and let him open up a couple of lengths and I think that was where he won the race.

“He's a great horse, it looks like he came back pretty good. Hopefully he can keep improving every race. He has a lot of heart because with these fractions (:21.77, :43.92, and 1:08.95)…He is good, he just loves to run.”

Idle since May 29 prior to running third down the hillside turf course in the San Simeon Stakes (G3) March 5, Brickyard Ride, one of three California-breds in a field of five older horses, was off as the 4-5 favorite and paid $3.60 for the win.

In becoming the first horse to take consecutive runnings of the Kona Gold since Bill Spawr's Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) winnerAmazombie in 2011 and 2012, Brickyard Ride notched his third graded stakes win and his eighth overall stakes victory.

A 6-year-old full horse by Clubhouse Ride out of the Southern Image mare Brickyard Helen, Brickyard picked up $60,000 for his efforts, increasing his earnings to $816,977 while running his overall race record to 13-1-3 from 25 starts.

“He's just a wonderful horse,” said Lewis. “That half mile was pretty rapid. I got a little concerned but, thankfully, Juan had a lot of horse when the running started. He's a fast dude, really fast. Fortunately, I'm blessed with very good help, (my) foreman was great, the groom's great. My exercise boys are great. My operation is really good and I don't have to do much but stand around and watch.”

Trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Ramon Vazquez, 9-5 second choice Anarchist finished 4½ lengths in front of stablemate and fellow Cal-bred Positivity.

Positivity, off at 12-1 with Tiago Pereira, finished third, another 4 1/2 lengths back.

Rattle N Roll Storms To Ben Ali Victory

Lucky Seven Stable's Rattle N Roll swept to the front passing the three-sixteenths pole and held off a late bid from Call Me Fast to claim his second graded stakes victory at Keeneland Saturday in the $300,000 Ben Ali (G3) for 4-year-olds and older.

Trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., Rattle N Roll scored by 1 1/4 lengths and covered the 1 3/16 miles over a fast track in 1:56.48. The victory is the third in the race for McPeek, who won in 2014 with Frac Daddy and in 2018 with Rated R Superstar, and the second for Hernandez, who was aboard Eagle for the victory in 2016. It was the third victory of the afternoon for Hernandez.

Pioneer of Medina led the field of seven through uncontested fractions of :23.34, :47.62, and 1:12.18 with Trademark stalking in second while Rattle N Roll raced in midpack.

Pioneer of Medina and Trademark reached the top of the stretch together with Rattle N Roll closing in from the outside with a clear run. Rattle N Roll blew the past leaders passing the three-sixteenths pole and opened a clear advantage with enough cushion left to hold off Call Me Fast.

Winner of the 2021 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) and a Keeneland sales graduate, Rattle N Roll is a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Connect out of the Johannesburg mare Jazz Tune. The victory was worth $181,350 and increased his earnings to $1,215,861 with a record of 6-1-2 from 16 career starts.

Rattle N Roll returned $7.98 for the win. Call Me Fast, ridden by Julien Leparoux, finished a half-length in front of third-place finisher Pioneer of Medina under Tyler Gaffalione.

It was another three lengths back to Happy American, who was followed in order by favored Skippylongstocking, Trademark and Tawny Port.

Ben Ali Quotes

Kenny McPeek (winning trainer of Rattle N Roll):

On Rattle N Roll's performance between winning Keeneland's Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at 2 and running fourth in the March 25 New Orleans Classic (G2) at Fair Grounds to start his 4-year-old season:

“He just needed that run down there at Fair Grounds. He'd been off a while and was a little bit rusty. He didn't quite get into his run as early. But we've kind of been plotting for this race. We thought it would be a really good spot for him.

“There's a couple of people (who are) the reason we're standing here: Greg Geier, my assistant at Churchill (Downs) – this is like 'his boy' – and Peter Soria, the groom who has handled this horse from the beginning. It's teammates like that that help us get here. Unfortunately, they don't get the glory of it all, but Greg Geier and Peter Soria are fabulous horsemen and contribute to this horse's daily routine more than I do.

“Peter told me in the Paddock when we were saddling, he said, 'Kenny, he'll win today,' and I said, 'I like to hear that, Peter,' because Peter knows. He knows what time he's done eating – we keep an eye on a lot of those details – and then Greg keeps the routine solid at Churchill. He has a basic routine. It's not complicated, but his team is rock-solid. They're like a Swiss watch over there, and it makes my job easy.”

Brian Hernandez Jr. (winning rider):

On navigating through traffic on a horse who comes from well off the pace:

“That's the good thing about this horse. Being fortunate enough to ride him as many times as I have, we've learned his tendencies. He's the type of horse that he doesn't get in a hurry early, but when he gets in his rhythm you just stay out of his way. He has a known tendency to make an early move, but that's just him, and if you try to slow him down when he starts to make his move, you just kind of compromise him. So I've learned to stay out of his way and let him run his race and leave it up to him. That's the good thing about riding good horses as well: He was there traveling for me the whole way, so when a little spot would open he was there, and he would turn off and turn on and navigate through traffic like we needed him to.”

Julien Leparoux (rider of runner-up Call Me Fast): “We had a good race. He improved the way he ran. No excuse, just a good race for my horse.”

Tyler Gaffalione (rider of third-place finisher Pioneer of Medina): “Everything went to plan. From the inside post, we wanted to be aggressive. He broke alertly and put me in a good spot. He traveled well within hand throughout. Coming in the stretch, he kicked on but was no match for the winner today. The plan really wasn't to be in front, but we wanted to break alertly. He has a tendency to kind of get left in the gate, so we wanted to help him out of there. He's a big, long-striding horse, so I didn't want to take anything away.”

Irad Ortiz Jr. (rider of fifth-place finisher and beaten favorite Skippylongstocking): “Perfect trip. The horse felt good, did everything good. The horse that won is a good horse. I think (Skippylongstocking is) better than he showed today. The pace was fast for the distance.”

Verstappen Outduels Red Knight For 16-1 Elkhorn Upset

Andrew Farm, For the People Racing Stable, and Windmill Manor Farm's Verstappen held off Red Knight by a head to win the 38th running of the $350,000 Elkhorn (G2) for 4-year-olds and up Saturday afternoon at Keeneland.

Verstappen made his graded stakes debut a winning one as he outdueled Red Knight in deep stretch to prevail.

Trained by Brendan Walsh and ridden by Declan Cannon, Verstappen completed the 1½ miles on a turf course rated as good in 2:29.28. It is Cannon's first Keeneland stakes victory.

Tiz the Bomb led the field of eight through fractions of :24.68, :49.69, 1:14.93 and 1:40 while being hounded by defending Elkhorn winner Channel Maker as Verstappen and Red Knight raced at the rear of the field.

At the top of the stretch as the field began to bunch up, Verstappen and Red Knight had clear running on the outside with Verstappen getting the first jump and taking the lead at the eighth pole with Red Knight challenging to his inside but unable to get by.

A Keeneland sales graduate, Verstappen is a 4-year-old War Front gelding out of the Peintre Celebre mare Andromeda Galaxy. Now owning a record of 4-3-2 from 12 career starts, Verstappen increased his earnings to $447,846 with Saturday's $208,863 check.

Verstappen returned $34.30 for the win.

Red Knight, ridden by Gerardo Corrales, finished two lengths in front of third-place finisher Another Mystery under Jareth Loveberry.

It was another 1½ lengths back to Channel Maker, who was followed in order by Tiz the Bomb, Howe Street, Rising Empire. and Value Engineering.
