Back In The Saddle: Leg Amputation Can’t Halt Dreams Of Future Jockey Bruce Bourdieu

One day, Bryce Bourdieu wants to be a jockey. Though a morning training incident on Aug. 11, 2022, forced the loss of his leg, Bordieu hasn't let that stop him from dreaming; the young horseman is already getting back in the saddle.

“I want to be the first jockey to win the Kentucky Derby and the All American Futurity, hopefully in the same year,” Bordieu told KVIA this week.

The KVIA 'Good Vibes Only' video feature shows Bordieu jogging a horse around a local training center, getting used to riding once again.

The incident in August caused suffered severe injuries to Bordieu's spine which required multiple surgeries to stabilize, but the biggest trauma came later when Bourdieu developed compartment syndrome in his left leg. Every attempt was made to save the limb, but after 13 surgeries doctors were eventually forced to amputate his leg below the knee.

“He never once said, 'Why me?'” recalled Bourdieu's mother, Julie Farr, speaking to the Paulick Report late in 2022. “His attitude has inspired everyone who meets him… Even though it was horrific, I felt like I was really watching something special as he went through this.”

Mural Honouring Dettori Unveiled at Epsom

A giant mural celebrating champion jockey Frankie Dettori's remarkable 40-year career was unveiled by Epsom Downs Racecourse on Tuesday. The 52ft by 23ft art installation is located on the side of the Duchess Stand and depicts him in the colours of his 2015 G1 Derby winner Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

“It was a big surprise,” Dettori said. “I was quite embarrassed when I first saw it, actually. I love it. It is amazing, I'm gobsmacked, really. It's the young me and the older me. It was my biggest thrill in my racing career, the Derby in 2015 on Golden Horn. I'm glad it is there forever now. It looks great.”

Dettori has enjoyed some of his most memorable moments at Epsom Downs over the years, earning two Derby victories with Authorized (Ire) in 2007 and Golden Horn in 2015. The 52-year-old announced at the end of last year that 2023 would be his last season in the saddle.

“I have mixed feelings,” Dettori said. “It's the end of an era, and it's nice to be recognised with something as big as this. Epsom is a special place for me. I've had some great memories, lots of nice winners–two Derby wins, five Coronations, five Oaks. It's been a good stamping ground for me. [Winning another Derby} would be amazing. I haven't got a ride yet, but it will be amazing.”

Designed to encourage younger fans to attend Great Britains Flat racing during the summer, members will receive special perks in the form of reduced general admission prices at 10 different racecourses, as well as behind-the-scenes tours and raceday previews.

Club 26 will feature at all 26 QIPCO British Champions Series racedays this year, including the G1 Betfred Derby Festival at Epsom Downs, all five days at Royal Ascot in June, the Qatar Goodwood Festival at Goodwood, the Skybet Ebor Festival at York in August and the St Leger Festival at Doncaster in September.

“We are passionate about attracting young people to horseracing as future fans and participants and are very proud to launch Club 26 ahead of the QIPCO Guineas Festival,” HH Sheikh Fahad bin Abdullah Al Thani, Director of QIPCO, said. “We have lots of exciting plans for the Club and hope it educates and encourages more 18 to 26-year-olds, who are key to the future of this sport, to come racing.”

Rod Street, Chief Executive of QIPCO British Champions Series, said, “Our objective is to get a younger audience closer to horseracing, by involving them in some of the best Flat racing occasions in the calendar.
