Keeneland April Selected Horses Of Racing Age Sale Set For Sunday

Keeneland's April Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, which has cataloged several horses coming off victories earlier this month, will be held Sunday, April 30. The sale, which begins at 4 p.m. ET, will be livestreamed on Keeneland.com.

Because the April Sale kicks off Kentucky Derby week in the Bluegrass, Keeneland will celebrate this exciting time before the auction begins. From 2-4 p.m. in the Sales Pavilion, patrons will enjoy complimentary hospitality, including a lineup of specialty bloody marys, pub grub and snacks.

A total of 114 horses are cataloged to the auction, including 16 horses in the latest round of supplements. Keeneland will accept approved supplemental entries to the April Sale until the sale date.

Canterbury Park Brings Back 10 Percent Takeout On Post Time Pick 4, Pick 5

Canterbury Park will again offer a 10 percent takeout $.50 Pick 4 wager that will begin with the first race each day as well as a 10 percent takeout $.50 Pick 5 on the final five thoroughbred races daily. The takeout rate on both wagers is an industry low, resulting in a larger portion of the wagering pool being returned to winning bettors.

The 'Post Time Pick 4' requires the participant to select in order the winners of four consecutive races, placing the bet before the first race begins. A successful pick 5 wager requires winners in five consecutive races. Both are traditional wagers distributing the full pool less takeout to bettors selecting the first-place horse in each leg of the wager.

Canterbury Park's 54-day race meet runs May 27 through Sept. 16.

“We are very pleased to again offer an industry low 10 percent takeout on these wagering options,” Sr. Director of Racing Chris Merz said. “We are able to give more back to the betting public and also draw additional attention to our entire racing program.”

A record daily average $1.525 million was wagered on Canterbury's races in 2022.

New this season will be an 'All-Turf' Pick 3 wager with a $1 base and a 14 percent takeout offered primarily on Wednesday programs when weather and turf races allow.  The pick 3 sequence will consist of three turf races, not necessarily run consecutively.

“With turf popularity on the rise, we listened to what bettors wanted, providing them with an all-turf pick 3. We believe this bet will provide an appealing option to bettors looking for larger fields and a robust array of turf options,” Merz said.

Canterbury will race on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 5 p.m. central and on Sundays at 1 p.m. as well as Memorial Day, July 3 and Labor Day Mondays. Six consecutive 5 p.m. Thursday cards will be conducted beginning July 13.

Further information is available at www.canterburypark.com .

TIF: Kentucky Derby Prop Contest For Racing Charities Opens May 3

Seeking to highlight the value of adding fixed odds betting options to complement long-standing pari-mutuel pools, the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (TIF) will offer a free-to-enter contest around the 2023 running of the Kentucky Derby.

The TIF Derby Prop Contest will feature 20 prop-style questions on the race, the types of which are regularly offered to bettors in markets with legal, fixed-odds betting options, though rarely, if ever, on racing.

The top five players with the most correct selections will choose from four racing charities to direct $20,000 in donations. First place will direct $10,000, second $4,000, third $3,000, fourth $2,000 and fifth $1,000. Contributions will be made by the Lavin Family Foundation, of which TIF founder and Glen Hill Farm's president and CEO Craig Bernick is a director.

The selected charities for the TIF Derby Prop Contest are the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs, New VocationsPermanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and Second Stride.

Entries for the contest will open on TIF's website and via Twitter on Wednesday, May 3.

“Sports betting has been legalized in Kentucky and the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will serve as the regulatory agency overseeing it,” said TIF Executive Director Patrick Cummings. “But fixed odds betting for racing has not really been in the conversation and we are hoping that dialogue can pick-up in earnest in the near future.”

“Horsemen are justifiably concerned about ensuring purses receive a fair slice of handle from fixed odds betting, though the exact percentage splits will likely be different than pari-mutuel wagering,” Cummings added.

“Horsemen in many jurisdictions have enjoyed purse supplements from other forms of gaming. That should inspire them even more so to push for the introduction of fixed odds betting on U.S. racing for U.S. customers. Given how wagering on U.S. racing has evolved, and the extreme growth of sports betting, it's impossible to imagine a future for racing that does not include fixed odds along with a renovated pari-mutuel product.”

Only New Jersey offers fixed odds betting on racing, with the 2022 meet at Monmouth Park the first to do so. It is believed that customers in the state will enjoy both mobile and simulcast wagering at fixed odds for the first time in the coming weeks and months.

Triple Deat Heat For Jockey Of The Week: Declan Cannon, Juan Hernandez, Joel Rosario Tied In Voting

Triple dead heats are extremely rare in racing, the most famous being the 1944 Carter Handicap, and it's never happened for Jockey of the Week. Until now.

Declan Cannon, Juan Hernandez and Joel Rosario each had riding achievements last week where the panel of racing experts were evenly divided as to who was most deserving leading to the triple dead heat for Jockey of the Week honors for April 17 through April 23. The award recognizes jockeys for riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1,050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Riding at Keeneland on Saturday, Declan Cannon was aboard Verstappen for trainer Brendan Walsh in the Grade 2 Elkhorn. Let go as the longest shot in the field, Verstappen raced near the back of the eight-horse field until the top of the stretch. Verstappen and Red Knight had clear running room on the outside with Verstappen taking the lead at the eighth pole to win by a head over Red Knight in 2:29.28 for the mile and one-half. It was the first stakes win at Keeneland for Cannon.

“Declan rode him to perfection,” said Walsh. “I'm delighted for him. He does a lot of work for me in the mornings and this is a great reward.”

“My horse travelled so good, and I just rode him with confidence,” said Cannon.

Juan J. Hernandez continued his winning ways at the Hollywood meet at Santa Anita after taking the leading jockey title for the winter/spring meet. Hernandez was in the irons on Brickyard Ride for trainer Craig Lewis in the G3 Kona Gold. Brickyard Ride held off a determined Anarchist to register a repeat victory in the six and one-half furlong dirt contest in 1:15.84.

“He made a really good move around the three-eighths,” said Hernandez. “I felt the pace was really hot, these guys didn't want to leave me alone.”

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert gave a leg up to Hernandez on Defunded in the G2 Californian. After hopping at the start, the 5-year-old gelding cruised into contention around the far turn and blew past the competition to win by three lengths in 1:48.91.

“After the bad break, he relaxed really well behind those horses,” said Hernandez. “He picked it up by himself. I just let him go and he caught the horses.”

Joel Rosario picked up where he left off at Oaklawn. After winning the $1 million G1 Apple Blossom the week before aboard Clairiere, he was back for the $1 million G2 Oaklawn Handicap riding Proxy for trainer Michael Stidham. Proxy was in fifth as the horses entered the stretch but gained ground after going six wide to prevail by a head in 1:49.68 over defending Oaklawn Handicap winner Last Samurai.

Rosario also won the two other stakes races, the Valley of the Vapors on Merlazza for trainer Brad Cox and the Bath House Row for Oaklawn's all-time winningest trainer Steve Asmussen.

Other nominees for Jockey of the Week were Manny Franco who led all riders in wins with 11 and Jose Ortiz with two stakes wins at Aqueduct.
