Breeders’ Cup Turf Winner Daylami Dies At 29

The Aga Khan Studs is sad to announce the passing of Daylami, who was put to sleep due to the infirmities of old age. He was 29.

The distinctive grey son of Doyoun and Daltawa will be long remembered for his globetrotting exploits in both the green and red silks of his breeder H.H. the Aga Khan and the blue colors of Godolphin. He won 11 of his 21 starts between 1996 and 1999, only ever finishing out of the first three on three occasions.

Daylami's first of seven Group 1 victories came in the 1997 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. He thereafter won the Eclipse Stakes, the Man O'War Stakes, the Coronation Cup, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes, before capping a magnificent career by landing the Breeders' Cup Turf by two and a half lengths at Gulfstream Park. He was subsequently awarded the title of Cartier Horse of the Year and Eclipse Champion Male Turf Horse, and rated as the world's best racehorse of 1999 alongside Montjeu. He was given a Timeform rating of 138.

As a stallion, Daylami spent time in Ireland, France and South Africa, siring the likes of Classic winner Grey Swallow and dual Group 1 winner Voila Ici. He is also the broodmare sire of Group 1 winners such as Arcano, Grand Glory, Logician and Pierro, the latter now a champion sire in Australia.

For the past four years, Daylami had enjoyed a happy retirement with the Aga Khan Studs back at his birthplace in Ireland, cared for by his devoted handler Joe Doyle. He will be much missed by all the team and will be commemorated with a memorial at Gilltown Stud.

Kentucky Derby Ruled Out for Brave Emperor

Middleham Park Racing's Brave Emperor (Ire) (Sioux Nation), who has earned 32 qualifying points on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby, will not make the trip to Churchill Downs in May.

Confirming the decision to swerve the expensive journey across the Atlantic, Tom Palin of Middleham Park Racing said, “We have weighed it up and the horse's owners discussed the options. He has earned £108,000 but the costs of getting him to America would wipe out all of his earnings, so the decision has been made not to go, especially as there were a few questions marks, like the trip and the dirt.

“However, if an interested party came forward and wanted to partner up in the horse to share the costs and share the fun, we would consider that possibility.”

Bought for £19,000 as a yearling at Goffs UK, the Archie Watson-trained gelding has already taken his syndicate of owners on quite a ride, winning five of his eight starts. These include the Listed Prix de la Californie in Cagnes-sur-Mer and the 'Road to the Kentucky Derby' Conditions S. at Kempton, earning 20 points. He followed up that victory by finishing runner-up to Godolphin's Bold Act (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) in Chelmsford City's Cardinal Conditions S. on Saturday evening, accruing another 12 points.

Daughter of Street Cry Tops Tatts Online April

The top priced lot of the Tattersalls Online April sale was black-type producing mare Jumeirah Street (Street Cry {Ire}–Fashion's Flight, by Dixie Union) who was secured by Richard Knight, Newsells Park Stud and the A'Ali Partnership for 70,000 guineas. Consigned by Sophie Buckley's Culworth Grounds Farm, the 8-year-old-mare was offered in foal to the Darley stallion Masar (Ire). Offered as Lot 4, the bay is out of a full-sister to multiple graded winner and Grade I stakes-placed Justwhistledixie, who in turn is responsible for Grade I winners New Year's Day and Mohaymen.

Jumeirah Street has already produced stakes placed Jumbeau (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) followed by an unraced juvenile colt by Harry Angel (Ire) and a yearling filly by Sands of Mali (Fr).

The mare is intended to visit Newsells resident stallion, multiple group winner A'Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}).

“One of the partners in A'Ali identified the mare and we thought she was worth the punt,” said Julian Dollar of Newsells Park Stud. “We like Street Cry as a broodmare sire. The mare has made a good start with Jumbeau, her first 2-year-old, placed in the Marygate S. last season in the earliest stakes race of the year, showing she was fast and precocious.”

“She comes from a good family and we thought she fitted the profile for A'Ali who was a very fast and precocious racehorse himself. We have been really pleased with the A'Ali foals and that has emboldened us to be confident and to invest in more mares to support him. She has proven she can produce a fast and precocious horse and A'Ali should only help to strengthen that.”

The next highest priced offer, Lot 25, was secured by trainer Jamie Osborne who went to 25,000 gns for the three-time winner Elzaam Blue (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}–Ghostflower {Ire}, by Dansili {GB}). Offered by Darren Bunyan's Blackmiller Stables, the 5-year-old gelding's most recent win came at Dundalk in February over 1 mile 2 1/2 furlongs.

The Tattersalls Online April Sale realised a turnover of 196,600 gns for the sale of 16 lots at an average of 12,288 gns. Over 130 bidders registered for the sale from across Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Australia, and the Gulf region.

General Banker Sparks Kentucky Derby Dreams for Ferarro, Forma

Jimmy Ferraro has been a trainer since 1977 when he landed in the winner’s circle with his very first starter, a horse by the name of Talking Partner. In the course of those 46 years, he’s never been to Churchill Downs. Not with a starter. Not even as a fan. “I’ve been to Keeneland for the sales a few times,” the 66-year-old New York-based trainer said, “but never to Churchill Downs.”
