Horseshoe Indianapolis Cuts Pick 6, Adds Pick 5 to Wagering Menu

Horseshoe Indianapolis will eliminate the Jackpot Pick 6 from its wagering format in 2023 and will add an additional Pick 5 to its menu.

“Our team stays engaged with customers year-round and there's no question that the single most requested change from many of our best players was to eliminate the Jackpot Straight Fire 6,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “We have listened and are taking the Jackpot Pick 6 off the wagering format in 2023. It will be replaced with an additional Pick 5 on the first five Thoroughbred races daily and we think this will be a win-win for both our customers and horsemen.”

The Late Fire 5 joins the current Pick 5, which moves to the first five Thoroughbred races on the program. Both wagers will offer an industry low takeout of 11.99%. Each racing program will also retain two pick four wagers on the card, with the first Pick 4 held starting on the second Thoroughbred race and the late pick 4 scheduled for the last four Thoroughbred races on the card. Both Pick 4 wagers also have a reduced takeout of 15%. All four wagers begin with a 50-cent minimum and provide separate pools, each with their own carryovers.

The 21st season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing at the Indiana oval opens Apr. 18 and runs through Nov. 17.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Dozen Bonus Incentives Return For 2023

The Breeders' Cup announced the return of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Dozen, an incentive-based participation bonus program for horsemen pointing runners to the dirt races in the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Launched in 2022, the 12-race program is comprised of existing graded stakes races scheduled from May through October at six tracks throughout the United States.

The Dirt Dozen program will again award bonus credits funded by the Breeders' Cup for first through third-place finishes in the 12 program races. Horsemen can use those credits toward entry fees for one of six Grade 1 Breeders' Cup World Championships dirt races: the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, $2 million Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint, $2 million FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, $2 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, $1 million PNC Bank Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

In Dirt Dozen races in the $2 million Breeders' Cup race divisions, the bonus tier is allocated at $30,000 for first, $15,000 for second, and $7,500 for third. In Dirt Dozen races in the $1 million Breeders' Cup race divisions, the bonus tier will award $15,000 for first, $7,500 for second, and $3,750 for third.

The Dirt Dozen program begins May 6 with the Derby City Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs. The first three finishers in the race will earn credits toward entry fees for a potential start in the PNC Bank Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The program concludes Oct. 1 with the Zenyatta Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park, where the first three finishers in the race will earn credits toward entry fees for a potential start in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Last year, 13 horses that earned credits through the Dirt Dozen program participated in the Breeders' Cup. Three of those were also Breeders' Cup Challenge winners who took advantage of their automatic qualifying berths, leaving 10 contenders that applied earned credits toward a start in the World Championships.

“After a successful launch in 2022, we are happy to again present our innovative Dirt Dozen program,” said Dora Delgado, executive vice president and chief racing officer of Breeders' Cup Limited. “Last year, many horsemen who took advantage of those credits toward entry fees for our dirt races were rewarded at the World Championships, and we look forward to extending the same incentive to connections who are targeting a start at Santa Anita Park in November.”

Further information on rules and participation in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Dozen program is available on the Breeders' Cup Members site.

The familiar words “There They Go!”  from Hall of Fame track announcer Dan Jukich will again be rebounding off the backdrop of the North Shore Mountains with the return of thoroughbred racing at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sunday, April 30.

The season will run for 45 live racing dates, including the highly anticipated return of four popular Friday night cards this summer along with two Monday night dates during the annual Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition. The schedule includes 28 stakes races with purse money totaling $1.75 million highlighted by the 76th running of the $125,000 Grade 3 BC Derby and 58th running of the $75,000 BC Oaks on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Besides several other marquee stakes, one of the city's most fashionable events of the summer – The Cup – is set for Saturday, July 22.  It will be 13th edition of an exciting day at the races when guests dress Derby-style to enjoy premier seating and popular live music, together with special food and beverage offerings in a party atmosphere that traditionally attracts 10,000 patrons.

Other highlights during the season include BC Cup Day on the Aug. 7 holiday Monday with six stakes races restricted to BC-breds offering a total of $300,000 in purses. That's followed by the four CTHS stakes on Monday, Aug. 21, the first night card during the PNE Fair. The final two stakes of the season will run on Saturday, Oct. 14, both with new names and purses increased to $75,000:  The Glen Todd Fantasy for 2-year-old fillies and The Glen Todd Ascot for 2-year-old colts & geldings.

Hastings Racecourse is also excited to be bringing back the ever-popular dog races, including the beloved wiener dogs, and will feature several other special promotional days throughout the summer.

“Our team has been working tirelessly to create an unforgettable experience for everyone who comes through our gates,” says Nichelle Milner, regional manager of racing operations.  “The track is in excellent condition and our horse population continues to grow.  We know that our fans are in for a great time.”
