Kodiac’s Indestructible Continues Amo’s Flying Start In The Craven

Beaten twice by Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) at two but evidently unbowed, the aptly-named Indestructible (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Shareva {Ire}, by Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) marked his debut for the Karl Burke stable with a win in Newmarket's G3 Craven S. to continue Amo Racing's strong start to the current campaign on Thursday. Able to get into some kind of fight with Andrew Balding's leading 2000 Guineas hope in York's G3 Acomb S., he was put in his place when last seen in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster in September but re-emerged to underline the strength of that peer and further his own case for the imminent course-and-distance Classic.

Keen early for Kevin Stott, the 8-1 shot who was trained by Michael O'Callaghan as a juvenile pulled his way to the front after the first two furlongs with another Balding runner in The Foxes (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) tracking his every move away from the remainder. Tackled by that G2 Royal Lodge S. winner heading towards the dip, the bay pulled out more to gain the upper hand in the last 150 yards and score by 1 1/4 lengths, with Dancing Magic (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) 1 3/4 lengths further behind in third and Godolphin's 15-8 favourite Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) a disappointing last of the seven.

“This is a lovely, scopey horse,” Burke said. “I got a phone call just before Christmas asking if we'd take him and I'm not going to turn down horses like him. We had a couple of niggles with him physically after he arrived, nothing major, but because of those niggles I'm sure he's having a good blow today and he'll improve. I'd say I'd have to fight Kia [Joorabchian] now not to come back here in two weeks' time. He deserves his chance, I'm sure.”

King Power's racing manager Alistair Donald said of The Foxes, “This was always going to be a prep for the Dante and the Derby is the main focus. Today he's travelled great, looked like he was going to win the race and just got tired. I think he was a bit lonely out in front there as well. It's quite exciting and we're perfectly on track for the plan.”

Indestructible's dam Shareva was a fairly fast maiden herself, although her Aga Khan family offers the usual element of stamina to complement the speed influence of Kodiac. She is a daughter of Shareen (Ire) (Bahri), who was successful in the G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. before producing the dual G2 Blandford S. scorer Shamreen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who is in turn the dam of last year's G2 Railway S. winner and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G1 Phoenix S. third Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Shareva, who is also a half to the G3 Singspiel S. scorer Shahroze (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), has a 2-year-old full-sister to the winner who was sold for 320,000gns to Cheveley Park Stud at the Book 2 Sale and is now named Summit (Ire), while her yearling filly is by Ghaiyyath (Ire).

Keeneland Library Lecture Series Returns In May; Four Public Events Planned For 2023

Keeneland's popular Library Lecture Series resumes in May with the first of four public events that celebrate recently published works about Thoroughbred racing whose authors conducted research at Keeneland Library.

Tickets are $20 per event and will go on sale at 9 a.m., Friday, April 21 at Keeneland.com/library. Proceeds from these ticketed events will benefit the Keeneland Library Foundation, which funds Library preservation, education, outreach and access efforts.

The first two installments of the Library Lecture Series will feature books related to the Library's current exhibit, The Heart of the Turf: Racing's Black Pioneers:

· May 11 – Katherine Mooney will discuss Isaac Murphy: The Rise and Fall of a Black Jockey.

· June 22 – Mark Shrager will talk about The First Kentucky Derby: Thirteen Black Jockeys, One Shady Owner, and the Little Red Horse That Wasn't Supposed to Win.

The Heart of the Turf: Racing's Black Pioneers offers a deep exploration into the lives of African Americans in racing and their contributions to the Thoroughbred industry. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through August.

The Library Lecture Series continues with two events in late August and September:

· Aug. 24 – Jennifer Kelly will discuss The Foxes of Belair: Gallant Fox, Omaha, and the Quest for the Triple Crown.

· Sept. 28 – Patricia McQueen will review Secretariat's Legacy: The Sons, Daughters and Descendants Who Keep His Legacy Alive.

All programs will be held at the Library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. ET.

The author's presentation will be followed by a reception and book signing. A limited number of copies of featured books will be available for purchase.

Founded in 1939, Keeneland Library is one of the world's largest repositories of information related to Thoroughbred racing, housing nearly 30,000 books, more than 1 million photographic negatives and prints, and thousands of newspaper and magazine articles about all aspects of the equine industry. At the globally renowned public research institution, Library staff has assisted thousands of journalists, writers, academics, historians, racing fans and others with research.

The Library is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To reach the Library, enter Keeneland at Gate 1 (Man o' War Blvd.) on Keeneland Blvd. and take the first right on Entertainment Ct. The Library is to the left of the Keene Barn and Entertainment Center.

One-Time KY Derby Hopeful Brave Emperor To Race In Germany Next

Brave Emperor (Ire) (Sioux Nation) will travel to Germany for the G3 Dr Busch Memorial at Krefeld on Apr. 28, according to Middleham Park Racing's Tom Palin.

The listed winner, who was previously under consideration for the GI Kentucky Derby on May 6, ran second in the Woodford Reserve Cardinal Conditions S. when last seen on Apr. 1.

“He is on his travels, he's going to go to Germany for a Group 3 on Apr. 28 [Krefeld, Dr Busch Memorial], that's where he'll run next,” said Palin. “He's got no penalties. He has won a listed race but he's picked up novices, handicaps and conditions races so for a serial winner like him he doesn't have penalties so we can pick and choose. He should be rocking up at all the big meetings, Royal Ascot, Goodwood, so we'll hopefully have a good summer with him.

“Trip-wise, 10 furlongs might be a question mark, but certainly nine furlongs we are of the opinion is no problem, it is almost nine furlongs in Germany and we're confident about that.

“I can't see why he wouldn't see 10 out in the future. We could maybe think about something like the [G3] Hampton Court [S.] at Ascot [in June].”

Churchill Downs Incorporated Names Cathy Shircliff Director Of Equine Industry Relations

Churchill Downs Incorporated (“CDI”) announced Thursday that Cathy Shircliff has been promoted to Director of Equine Industry Relations. In this role, Shircliff will be responsible for the development and implementation strategies for the promotion of racing and stabling at CDI-owned racetrack properties with a focus on the recruitment of stables as well as the cultivation of horse racing fan development.

“Cathy has an unmatched passion for this industry that fuels her drive to find solutions to complex challenges,” said Gary Palmisano, CDI's Executive Director of Racing. “Beyond that effective enthusiasm, she has a unique skill of connecting stakeholders across the industry in a way that generates mutually-beneficial results and, ultimately, benefits the advancement of horse racing.”

A lifelong horse racing enthusiast, Shircliff started her career at CDI as an Event Manager for Churchill Downs Racetrack, where her responsibilities as Stakes Room Concierge included ensuring a stellar guest experience for horse owners. Most recently, she has served as the Director of Community Relations for CDI where she expanded CDI's footprint in Thoroughbred and Standardbred aftercare and facilitated the advancement of key nonprofit partnerships within the industry. In her new role, Shircliff will continue her work with equine industry charitable initiatives with a focus on horse aftercare.

“I am excited to join the dynamic CDI racing team and look forward to innovating ways to incorporate growth into our beloved traditions,” said Shircliff.

Shircliff is a graduate of Georgetown University with a bachelor of science in international business and finance, and a master of public administration in nonprofit management from the University of Louisville. She previously served on the boards of the Backside Learning Center and Kentucky Humane Society and is a current board member of Thoroughbred Charities of America. Prior to a career with CDI, she was the managing partner of Shircliff Publishing LLC, where she coordinated all aspects of the publication, marketing and sales of a book titled, “The Kentucky Derby.”

Shircliff's appointment as Director of Equine Industry Relations will be effective immediately. She will maintain and fulfill select community relations responsibilities through this year's Kentucky Derby.
