Baffert Vs. Locals In The Sunland Park Derby

Even with the expected scratch of Tim Yakteen's Bob Baffert transfer Fort Bragg (Tapit), the GIII Sunland Park Derby has plenty of new connections trying their hand at the available 50- 20-15-10-5 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Baffert himself brings in the non-Derby eligible Hard to Figure (Hard Spun), second to Newgate (Into Mischief) in the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. at Santa Anita Feb. 4.

The local contingent is led by Henry Q (Blame)–winner of the sole local prep in the Mine That Bird Derby Feb. 28–and the top three finishers of Sunland's Riley Allison Derby in One In Vermillion (Army Mule), Steve Asmussen's How Did He Do That (Good Magic), and Wild On Ice (Tapizar). Neither Henry Q, How Did He Do That, or Wild On Ice are Triple-Crown nominated.

Sunday Insights: Brown Pair Debut With Candy Ride Connection

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

1st-AQU, $80K, Msw, 3yo/up, 6 1/2f, 1:20 p.m.
Trainer Chad Brown has Aqueduct's first race on closing day bookended with a pair of firsters from his shedrow in OCASEK (Candy Ride {Arg}), who draws the rail with Dylan Davis aboard and to the outside ARMY TIMES (Into Mischief) with Manny Franco in the irons. Both have a Candy Ride connection as the former, who was a $440,000 '21 FTSAUG  purchase by Spendthrift Farm, was sired by him, while the latter's dam, MGSW & MGISP Paid Up Subscriber, claims the stud as her own.

Peter Brant' Army Times was bred by Joseph Allen, who incidently co-owned his dam and was conditioned by Brown and White Birch Farm. Pointing to this spot, Brant's bay colt put forward a bullet four-furlong work Mar. 10 in :47 (1/125). Stablemate Ocasek is not without merits, as his dam Shananies Song (Eltish) has turned out a diverse group of offspring in GSP Bellamentary (Bellamy Road) and a pair full-brothers by Flatter in GSW Favorable Outcome and GSW Mouheeb. 11th-FG, $50K, Msw, 3yo/up, 1mT, 4:50 p.m.
Out of Unicorn Girl, champion MGISW Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) was a $95,000 Ylg KEESEP in 2019 and earned almost $3 million on the racetrack. Going for $600,000 at the Mixed KEENOV sale a year later, half-brother OCEAN CITY (American Pharoah) looks to continue that legacy in what will be his second start for Jackie's trainer Steve Asmussen at the Fair Grounds after a fourth place behind a pair of 'TDN Rising Stars' in Bishop's Bay (Uncle Mo) and First Mission (Street Sense) Feb. 18 going six panels. Switching to the grass and ridden by James Graham from the rail, the Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith-owned bay colt was bred by J&J Stables and Carlo Vaccarezza. TJCIS PPS

12th-TAM, $27K, Msw, 3yo, f, 1/16mT, 6:10 p.m.
From the chute on Sunday, look for FLYLIKEABUTTERFLY (IRE) (Kingman {GB}) to debut for trainer Kent Sweezey from gate one with Angel Rodriguez aboard. She is out of a family that includes a pair of graded-stakes winners in Nayyir (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and Sky Hunter (GB) (Motivator {GB}). Drawing the eight hole with Javier Castellano in-town to ride is first timer for trainer Christophe Clement, MONEY BEETS (City of Light). She was a $575,000 '21 KEESEP buy and is out of stakes-winning mare Do the Dance (Discreet Cat), who counts Japanese MGSP Randonnee (Blame) as a half. TJCIS PPS

West Will Power Takes New Orleans Classic By Comfortable Margin

Mary and Gary West's homebred West Will Power kicked to the lead nearing the home turn, then drew clear down the stretch to win the $500,000 New Orleans Classic (G2) by 4 3/4 lengths Saturday at Fair Grounds while becoming racing's newest millionaire.

The 6-year-old son of Bernardini, ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Brad Cox, pressed pacesetter Treasury downs the backstretch and launched his winning bid at the three-furlong pole before powering away to a convincing victory.

West Will Power won for sixth time from 15 career starts. He entered Saturday's race off a pair of strong seconds in the Clark (G1) behind Proxy last November at Churchill Downs and the Razorback (G3) behind Last Samurai Feb. 18 at Oaklawn in his 2023 bow.

West Will Power paid $7.20 after running 1 1/8 miles in 1: 47.95. Early fractions were :23.55, :47.30, 1:11.24, and 1:35.54.

Art Collector, the 4-5 favorite, finished second and Mr. Wireless checked in third.

Kentucky-bred West Will Power was produced by the Wild Event mare Wild Promises. The $300,000 winner's share of the purse increased his lifetime earnings to $1,086,730

City of Light’s Eye Witness Conquers Turfway’s Animal Kingdom S.

Debuted against New York breds at Belmont's Aqueduct meeting last fall, Eye Witness caught the losing end of the three-horse photo finish, winding up third by a head in a six-furlong grass sprint. Sidelined for the next three months, he started his New Year strong by breaking his maiden at a mile over the synthetic track at Turfway Jan. 1 over a pair of next-out winners. A $650,000 Keeneland September yearling, Eye Witness shortened back up to six panels Saturday and went off the popular 3-5 choice in the scratched-down field of five. Placed just off early leader Olazabal as the fractions ticked by in :22.26 and :46.54, the bay held that spot before easily sprinting by the pacesetter past the quarter pole. Much the best down the stretch, Eye Witness had plenty of run left and cruised home to win by open lengths as Olazabal came home second best. From his sire's first crop, the colt is out of a half-sister to GSW & GI Florida Derby runner up Sharp Humor (Distorted Humor). Gracilia saw her 2-year-old Practical Joke filly bring a final bid of $190,000 from Kingsport Farm at last week's OBS March Sale and she last produced a filly by Game Winner last year.
