Hard Spun’s Two Phil’s Dominates Jeff Ruby

A few days prior to Saturday's GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, Larry Rivelli, the trainer of Two Phil's (c, 3, Hard Spun–Mia Torri, by General Quarters), had said, “I've been trying to think of the easiest spot for the money and I think this will be the spot. If he absolutely hates the surface, that's on me. I'm sort of putting myself out there saying that I think he will run well over it.”

He didn't hate the surface.

Patricia's Hope LLC and Phillip Sagan's Two Phil's powered to a 5 1/4-length victory in the $700,000 Jeff Ruby and now sits atop the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard with 123. The Jeff Ruby currently allots Derby points on a 100-40-30-20-10 scale. Last year's Derby winner, Rich Strike (Keen Ice), was third in the Jeff Ruby. Rivelli indicated Two Phil's would also be pointed to Louisville.

Funtastic Again (Funtastic) set all the pace in the Jeff Ruby, with 8-5 Major Dude (Bolt d'Oro) covered up on the rail in fourth as fractions clicked by in :23.49 and :47.84. Two Phil's was clear on the outside but a few lengths in arrears as the pace quickened, then emerged from the fray, matching strides with Major Dude as the two attempted to reel in the frontrunner. The battle looked to be joined between the trio, but Two Phil's quickly thumbed his nose at the other two and simply sailed on by to win by 5 1/4 lengths in a powerful performance. Major Dude and Funtastic Again finished second and third, respectively.

“The original plan probably wasn't to run in this spot,” confessed Rivelli after the race. “I was just looking for the best route to get Two Phil's to the Kentucky Derby. With this race on the calendar I thought it was the perfect timing and perfect spot. We're on our way to the Derby.”

Winning jockey Jareth Loveberry had more to add: “Three weeks ago I suffered a hairline fracture in my left fibula but I'm pretty high on life right now and don't feel that too much. Two Phil's has seemed to get better each week this winter at Fair Grounds. Last time he had a beautiful trip but he seems to do his best running while behind horses. I think he's getting better with each start. He ran well in the Lecomte but I thought he was even better in the Risen Star. It's just very exciting to be partnered with a horse like this and a team that's supported me.”

Two Phil's was 5-2 in this first start on Tapeta after making all his previous starts on dirt. He had debuted off the board last June at Churchill, but came right back a month later to break his maiden by daylight at Colonial Downs going six furlongs in 1:09.79. His first stakes win was a 9 3/4-length blowout in the Shakopee Juvenile S. at Canterbury in September prior to an off-the-board finish when trying deeper waters behind eventual champion Forte (Violence) in the GI Claiborne Breeders Futurity at Keeneland in October. Just three weeks later Two Phil's regrouped going the identical 1 1/16-mile distance of the Futurity in the GIII Street Sense S. at Churchill in the slop, resulting in a powerhouse 5 1/4-length score. A three-month freshening netted a second to Instant Coffee (Bolt d'Oro) in the GIII Lecomte S. and a third to Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) in the GII Risen Star S., both at Fair Grounds prior to shipping to Kentucky for the Jeff Ruby.

Co-owner Sagan also bred Two Phil's, who was a $150,000 RNA at Keeneland September in 2021.

Pedigree Notes:

Two Phil's is following in his sire's footsteps, winning the Jeff Ruby on his way to the GI Kentucky Derby. Hard Spun won the same race in 2007–when it was called the Lane's End S.–en route to a second in Louisville and has since turned into a stellar sire, with 97 black-type winners worldwide to his credit. The Darley sire also has one U.S. champion and 47 graded/group winners with a healthy number of those at the highest level.

Broodmare sire General Quarters currently stands in Turkey and counts three stakes winners out of his daughters. Mia Torri is one of five black-type winners by the Sky Mesa stallion and Two Phil's is her first foal. She has a 2-year-old Omaha Beach colt who was a $32,000 RNA at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's October yearling sale last year. The mare also has a yearling McKinzie colt and was bred back to Omaha Beach for this spring.

Key Of Life Wires Purple Martin Field At Oaklawn

Flurry Racing Stables LLC and Hoffman Family Racing LLC's Key of Life was the fastest out of the gate and was never headed, drawing off to easily win Saturday's $150,000 Purple Martin Stakes for 3-year-old fillies in front of a crowd of 32,500 Oaklawn Park.

With jockey Isaac Castillo in the irons, Key of Life set fractions for :22.27 and 45.68 for the first half mile. The winner was able to catch her breath around the turn for home and once in the stretch, she drew away from her competition to win by 3¼ lengths over Socially Selective, who had tracked from second throughout. Klassy Bridgette, the 8-5 favorite, was third.

The winning time for six furlongs over a fast track was 1:09.90 on a fast track.

Key of Life, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Mo Town out of Harlan's Holiday mare Longride to Wisdom, improved her record to 4-0-3 from seven career starts and has now earned $391,475. Bred by Moreau Bloodstock International Inc., she returned $7 for the victory.

Purple Martin Quotes:

Winning jockey Isaac Castillo: “She's a nice filly. Thanks to (trainer) Brad Cox and all his team for giving me the opportunity. Thanks to the owners (Staton Flurry and Gregory Hoffman). I just played the break. This filly is so fast out of the gate. So, I was able to make the lead.”

Winning owner Staton Flurry: “She got pinned on the rail; the track last out was muddy. Everything was coming from off the pace that day (Feb. 11 Dixie Belle Stakes). It was the perfect storm of bad luck. She's just a nice filly. I'm excited to see what the rest of the year holds. Hopefully, we can get a graded race or two with her and keep on rolling with the flow.”

Kingsbarns Takes Louisiana Derby Field Wire To Wire To Remain Undefeated

Spendthrift Farm's Kingsbarns ran his record to a perfect three-for-three with a front-running 3 1/2-length victory under Flavien Prat in Saturday's Grade 2, $1-million TwinSpires Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La. The Uncle Mo colt gave trainer Todd Pletcher a record fifth Louisiana Derby win while earning 100 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

Disarm, ridden by Joel Rosario, finished second for trainer Steve Asmussen, who was tied with Pletcher for most Louisiana Derby wins going into this year's renewal. Jace's Road finished another 2 3/4 lengths back in third for trainer Brad Cox and jockey Florent Geroux, with Shopper's Revenge and Ricardo Santana Jr. fourth, and Sun Thunder and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. fifth in the field of a dozen 3-year-olds.

The second through fifth-place finishers, respectively, received 40-30-20-10 Derby qualifying points.

Instant Coffee, the 3-2 favorite and one of three starters for trainer Cox (Jace's Road and Tapit's Conquest were the others), finished sixth after rallying extremely wide from off the pace. He was followed by Tapit's Conquest, Cagliostro, Baseline Beater, Denington, Curly Jack and Singer Ruler.

Kingsbarn, named for a Scottish golf links, covered 1 3/16 miles on a fast main track in 1:57.33 and paid $11 to win as the second betting choice.

Bred in Kentucky by Parks Investment Group, Kingsbarns was an $800,000 purchase at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale of 2-year-olds in training at Gulfstream Park. The colt, who breezed a quarter mile in :20 3/5, was consigned by Tom McCrocklin, who purchased Kingsbarns on behalf of Champion Equine as a yearling for $250,000 at the previous year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale from Paramount Sales.

Kingsbarns is the second foal out of the Tapit mare, Lady Tapit, who won one race and was placed in a Grade 3 stakes at Santa Anita.

Prat was the third rider for Kingbarns in as many starts. When the colt debuted in a one-mile maiden race at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 14, Luis Saez was in the irons for the 1 3/4-length win from just off the pace. Next out in a mile and 40 yard Tampa Bay Downs allowance race on Feb. 12 that Kingsbarns won by 7 3/4 lengths , Antonio Gallardo was aboard.

Saez opted for Instant Coffee, who he'd ridden to victories last November in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs and the G3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds on Jan. 21. Prat flew in from California for the day, also winning the G2 New Orleans Classic aboard West Will Power for Cox earlier in the day.

Seizing the opportunity in a field devoid of much early speed, Prat sent Kingsbarns to the lead from the outset, going the opening quarter mile in :24.71 under pressure from Jace's Road, then relaxed into a comfortable gallop while maintaining a one length lead over that rival through a half-mile in :49.60 and six furlongs in 1:14.69.

By the time the field reached the top of the stretch, the mile clocked in 1:39.13, Kingsbarns had opened up by 4 1/2 lengths and cruised to the wire without being seriously threatened.

The Louisiana Derby has been won in recent years by Epicenter (2022 3-year-old male champion), Hot Rod Charlie (2021, later winner of the G1 Pennsylvania Derby), Girvin (2017, later winner of the G1 Haskell) and Gun Runner (2016 winner and Horse of the Year in 2017). The last Louisiana Derby winner to also win the Kentucky Derby was Grindstone in 1996.

Southlawn Upsets Fair Grounds Oaks

Southlawn (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Mo d'Amour, by Uncle Mo), a runaway, eight-length optional claiming winner at Fair Grounds with first-time Lasix in her sophomore debut Feb. 17, ran back to that effort in a big way to upset Saturday's GII Fair Grounds Oaks.

Drawn on the fence, the 7-1 chance trailed the field of five heading into the clubhouse turn. Southlawn traveled nicely in an inside fourth down the backstretch and set her sights on the top two as they straightened.

Last out GII Rachel Alexandra S. heroine and 'TDN Rising Star' Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) took over from favored Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief) and looked well on her way as they straightened, but Southlawn was just winding up. Tipped out into the clear, Southlawn came rolling over the top to win going away by 3 1/4 lengths. Pretty Mischievous was second; The Alys Look (Connect) was third.

Southlawn, fifth as the favorite behind champion Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) going 5 1/2 furlongs on debut at Churchill June 3, was a five-length maiden winner going a mile at second asking with blinkers added in an Ellis off-the-turfer July 31. Thrown right into the deep end, she was a well-beaten seventh in the GIII Pocahontas S. at Churchill Sept. 17. Switched to grass facing allowance company in her next two, she was off the board on both occasions, finishing ninth at Keeneland Oct. 28 and fifth in her juvenile finale at Churchill Nov. 20.

Pedigree Notes:

Southlawn, a $290,000 KEESEP yearling, becomes the 25th graded/48th stakes winner for the late Pioneerof the Nile. Broodmare sire Uncle Mo is now responsible for four graded winners and 11 stakes winners. SW & MGSP Mo d'Amour, a half-sister to MGSP Colonial Creed (Jimmy Creed), is also represented by a Quality Road colt of 2021 ($300,000 KEESEP yearling) and a Constitution colt of this year. Mo d'Amour, a $22,000 KEESEP yearling and $75,000 OBSMAR juvenile, outran her 37-1 odds to finish fifth in the 2016 GI Kentucky Oaks. She carried the colors of WinStar for her 4-year-old campaign after being purchased privately from King of Prussia Stable.
