Army Mule Represented By First Graded Winner in Herecomesthebride

NBS Stable and Elements Racing LLC's Danse Macabre (Army Mule) was making her seasonal debut at a juicy quote of 12-1 in Saturday's GIII Herecomesthebride S. at Gulfstream Park and fought her way to the wire to become the first graded winner for her successful young sire (by Friesan Fire) with a defeat of the U.S.-debuting Papilio (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

Stretching out to a route of ground for the first time and visiting the races for the first time since checking in third as the favorite in the GIII Matron S. at Aqueduct last Oct. 8, the $11,000 Keeneland January short yearling turned $55,000 OBS March breezer was eager early on, but not overly so, and settled well enough three wide and a bit more than a length off pacesetting Moonage Daydream (Candy Ride {Arg}). Put to a hard drive by Adam Beschizza while racing three deep at the three-eighths pole, Danse Macabre hit the front once heads were turned for home, but immediately had Papilio–four wide the trip–breathing down her neck. The latter drifted out in upper stretch, then came in at the furlong grounds and appeared to exchange bumps with Danse Macabre before just failing to finish her job. Cairo Consort (Cairo Prince), the odds-on pop off an amazing victory in the GIII Sweetest Chant S. last time, raced behind midfield in a race run at a modest tempo, and got home well on the grandstand side, but too late.

A debut second sprinting over the Churchill main track last June, Danse Macabre won her maiden with a 78 Beyer in a Colonial turf sprint the following month ahead of a runner-up effort in Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. Aug. 21. The chestnut filly struck from close range in the valuable Untapable S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 13 before closing her season in the Matron.

“Numbers-wise, she fit in here really well,” said trainer Kelsey Danner, winning the first graded stakes of her young career. “The distance was the question. She's trained like she wanted to go farther. Her last couple races she wanted to probably go a little farther. I think Kentucky Downs probably plays like 7 1/2 [furlongs]. She's got a lot of heart. She's just a classy filly. She does her job every day.”

Pedigree Notes:

Danse Macabre is the first foal to the races from her dam, a winning half-sister to three-time graded winner Cambodia (War Front), whose two Grade I placings include a third to Wuheida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf over a mile and a quarter. The filly's stakes-winning third dam is responsible for three-time South African champion sprinter and two-time Grade 1 winner Overarching (Arch); GSW Temeraine (Arch); SW Dead Red (Out of Place); and the dam of GI Natalma S. winner Abscond (Blame).

Sylphide is also the dam of a 2-year-old Liam's Map filly that was bought back on a bid of $240,000 at KEESEP last fall and a yearling filly by Always Dreaming. She is due for a full-sibling to Danse Macabre this season.

Emmanuel Overcomes Traffic Trouble For Canadian Turf Triumph

Siena Farm LLC and WinStar Farm LLC's Emmanuel finally found room to run and the 4-year-old son of More Than Ready was much the best in the $150,000 Canadian Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park.

The 6-5 favorite, ridden by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, found himself behind a wall of horses heading into the stretch, but once an opening appeared, Emmanuel went through it and set his sights on stablemate Steady On, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. and owned by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable, who had assumed the lead.

Emmanuel ($4.60), who set a course record at the same distance when victorious in the Tampa Bay (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs in his first start of the year, was timed in 1:40.31 over the firm course.

This was the third win of the day for Pletcher, who also took the third race with Up to the Mark and the $200,000 Colonel Liam with Dude N Colorado.

Peter Brant and Joseph Allen LLC's Fort Washington finished third for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and jockey Jose Ortiz.

Emmanuel, who was produced by the Hard Spun mare Hard Cloth, was bred in Kentucky by Helen K. Groves Revocable Trust. His dam is a half sister to multiple Group 1 winner Hawkbill and 2017 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) winner Free Drop Billy. He has a 5-0-1 record from eight lifetime starts and $450,450 in purse earnings.

Canadian Turf (G3) Quotes

Winning owner Elliott Walden, President & CEO WinStar Farm (Emmanuel): “He's doing really well. We're very happy with his two races here at 4. We learned a lot again today. He was in a bit of traffic trouble but found his way through and kicked well. He's a very good colt, a high-quality colt with a big pedigree, so we're excited about the future.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher (Emmanuel, 1st; Steady On, 2nd): “There was a lot going on in the race. The first turn got a little hairy and [Souper Dormy] had a little trouble steering and he [Emmanuel] got in some traffic. [Jockey Javier Castellano] was able to extract him late and he came back with a good finish. Both horses ran very well.

“[Emmanuel is] a versatile horse and he has come back well. I think for right now we'll focus on the turf.”

Winning jockey Javier Castellano (Emmanuel): “The horse has adapted extremely well to grass racing in his last three outings. He gets a better hold of the surface and is able to show his spectacular turn of foot on it.”

“I think you have to be much more patient on the Gulfstream Park turf, try to save as much ground as possible on the turns, as well as saving the horse's energy for the right moment to move as the last turn nears, to be able to take advantage of the spaces in the home stretch.”

Mylady Scores First U.S. Victory With Last-To-First Rally In The Very One

Mrs. Michaela Faust's Mylady, the longest price of three horses trained by Chad Brown, made a last-to-first move to win the $150,000 The Very One (G3) at Gulfstream Park Saturday.

The 1 3/8-mile The Very One for older fillies and mares on the grass was the second of nine stakes, eight graded, worth $1.85 million on a spectacular 14-race program anchored by the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) for 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Edgard Zayas, Mylady, a 4-year-old German-bred daughter of The Grey Gatsby, moved up with a rush as the field headed toward the far turn. She easily moved past the pacesetter, Joseph Allen LLC's 37-1 long shot Flying Fortress, who carved out early fractions of :24.40, :48.71, and 1:14.84.

At the end, Mylady ($19.60) had to hold off stablemate Higher Truth, who was rallying late. Brown's other horse in the field, the Peter Brant's favored defending winner Virginia Joy, finished fourth behind e Five Racing's Transient.

The winning time was 2:15.14.

The race marked the first start with Brown for Mylady, who was previously trained by Markus Klug. She began her career in Germany and had three wins, a second, and a third in eight starts on the grass. In her previous start, Mylady finished sixth in the E.P. Taylor (G1) at Woodbine on Oct. 8. She was twice classic-placed in Germany last year with a third in the German Oaks (G1) and a second in the German One Thousand Guineas (G1) amd scored her first U.S. triumph in The Very One.

The Very One Quotes

Trainer Chad Brown (Mylady, 1st; Higher Truth, 2nd; Virginia Joy, 4th): “It worked out pretty good. Virginia Joy had a rough trip; the other two were OK. Mylady had to go pretty wide, but he had saved so much ground early that it worked out.”

“[Owner Mrs. Michaela Faust] is a new client who was referred to me. I'm very happy that they trusted me with this horse. We love the horse.”

Winning jockey Edgard Zayas (Mylady): “Thank God [trainer Chad Brown] has given me a couple of opportunities to ride for him, and the victory means a lot to me. The race did not unfold as we planned, since we wanted to be closer to the pace. She didn't have a good start, so I decided to bide my time and make the one move. The only advice I got from Chad was, 'There are three turns in this race; you are only allowed to go wide in one,' which was actually something [late Hall of Fame trainer] Bobby Frankel used to say to jockeys. I think I made him proud.”

Brown Dominates Big A Oaks Prep

With her undefeated record on the line, Shidabhuti earned 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks with a win in the  Busher S. at Aqueduct Saturday. Dismissed at 5-1 behind heavily favored Asset Purchase, she was forced back after contact at the break to track that favorite from third. Racing alongside Capella up the backstretch, Shidabhuti loomed four wide between rivals as the field swung around the bend and outdrove Asset Purchase down the lane, assuming command with a sixteenth to run and clearing off nicely for the win, topping a Chad Brown exacta. With the 50 points earned Saturday, Shidabhuti now sits in third in the standings on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

“Both fillies ran well,” said Brown. “Dylan [Davis] used good judgement on Shidabhuti to stay close and they weren't going really fast. He put her in the clear in the stretch and he timed it just right.”

“Again today, I had to ride her a little early, but once we straightened up again around the eighth pole, she found her stride again,” added Davis. “I thought she handled this track pretty well.”

Out of a half-sister to MGSP Wind Fire (Distorted Humor), Shidabhuti traces back through her third dam, MGISW Dream Supreme, to GI Hopeful S. winner Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy). Her dam foaled a filly by McKinzie last year before visiting Not This Time for a 2023 foal. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
