Australia: Group 1 Winner The Quarterback Finds Forever Home With Former Jockey Matthew ‘Max’ Allen

In 2016, The Quarterback made dreams come true for connections when he won the Lexus Newmarket Handicap at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse, especially his trainer Robbie Griffiths, for whom it provided his first Group 1 win. These days the champion is enjoying retirement in the care of his ex-jockey, Matthew 'Max' Allen.

The 2016 Newmarket feels like yesterday for Robbie Griffiths.

“To win any Group 1 was remarkable, but to win your first Group 1 at Flemington in the best sprint race in Australia, the Newmarket Handicap, that's just a dream,” Griffiths said.

A horse with a great affiliation with the Flemington straight, having had three wins there already including the Listed Kensington Stakes, connections were confident in The Quarterback's ability. Vital to the result was input from part owner and Griffiths' close friend, the late Deane Lester. Lester's pre-race analysis and speed map helped form a plan for The Quarterback to follow Chautauqua, a known backmarker.

“It was a pretty brave plan to try and come off the back of a champion, but that was our strategy, and with the light weight we thought we would stalk him, and it all came to fruition,” said Griffiths.

Piloting the horse to victory that day was Craig Newitt, his third Newmarket win after victories on Miss Andretti and Shamexpress. The Quarterback's more regular rider at the time, Max Allen, couldn't ride at the 52kg allocated to the horse but was “there in spirit,” according to Griffiths.

“Max was a big part of his story. He rode him in a lot of his wins, from his maiden victory right through a lot of his victories throughout his career.”

Allen has become an even more integral part of The Quarterback's life, and took him into his care once the horse retired. Happily living at Allen's home, The Quarterback is “spoilt rotten” by Allen, his partner Rachel ,and son Max Jr., with visits to the beach and freedom to run around the paddock in the company of his paddock mate.

“I don't think people outside of racing understand the bond that everyone has with racehorses in general, because we all started ungodly hours of the morning and you don't do it for the money, you do it for the passion, and it's the passion and the love you have with the horses that you work with,” Griffiths said.

Horses that retire from racing but go on to have successful careers in other areas is always thrilling for Griffiths, his team and the owners.

“We have a lot of our horses that compete well in Garryowens and Barastoc newcomers and show jumping and so on, or are just happy in retirement like The Quarterback.”

While the Newmarket brings back special memories each year for Griffiths and connections, it will be especially emotional in 2023 as the first one without Deane Lester, who was such an essential part of The Quarterback's success.

LED The Way: Woodbine Mohawk Park Plans To Replace Track Lighting

Woodbine Mohawk Park has announced its plan to advance its current racetrack lighting system to a new, state-of-the-art LED lighting system that will provide horse people and fans with an exceptional new look and elevated racing experience.

In keeping with its mandate to provide world-class racing complemented by a dedication to excellence and innovation as an industry leader, Woodbine Mohawk Park (WMP) has made a commitment to bring to fruition a significant multi-phased infrastructure investment to the racetrack.

WMP will be working in partnership with Musco Lighting, who are considered world leaders in the design and manufacturing of sports infrastructure lighting solutions. They have pioneered systems using LED technologies that have made dramatic improvements in energy efficiency with the ability to control spill light and glare.

“This exciting new LED system will play a significant role in delivering clear, consistent light levels for horses, drivers and viewers across our simulcast community,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “In alignment with Woodbine Entertainment's commitment to green initiatives, this system will also enable pinpoint precision with lighting, dramatically cutting off any impact on the surrounding areas. The end result will be a game-changing experience for everyone associated with our top-of-class Standardbred racing.”

The system utilizes controlled light, not floodlights, and the patented, customizable optics of the system can control the LED light unlike any other lighting solution. This will ultimately improve the quality of pictures produced by WMP's award-winning broadcast department, which are then transmitted via our simulcast racing product and network programming, both nationally and internationally.

With the new installation, there will be consistency of light levels around the track that will enhance the safety of our equine athletes and drivers, as well as produce better image quality from our cameras to the AGCO (our regulators) to assist them with their officiating of racing at WMP.

Mobilization will begin on March 13, and this retrofit will take place over a number of weeks with no disruption to the race schedule.

Updates on the project will be posted on Woodbine's social media channels and through its official Standardbred website, www.woodbine.com/mohawk/

Godolphin Runner Scores in His Majesty The King’s Cup in Bahrain

Godolphin's Passion And Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) returned to Bahrain after finishing second in the G3 Bahrain International Trophy on Nov. 18 to win the Listed His Majesty The King's Cup at the Bahrain Equestrian Club on Friday. The 7-year-old gelding is trained by Saeed bin Suroor and was ridden by Daniel Tudhope. Passion And Glory got the better of the Appleby-trained First Ruler (GB) (Dubawi [Ire]) to give Godolphin a one-two finish.

Bin Suroor said, “It was a great result to see Passion And Glory win here. He is a proven horse and his jockey looked after him. If you look back at his wins, he likes going right-handed and that is why we brought him here.” Earlier on the card, the 6-year-old gelding Byline (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) was victorious in the Listed Al Methaq Mile after an eighth in Saudi Arabia in the G3 Neom Turf Cup two weeks ago. The Allen Smith trainee was ridden by Gerald Mosse, which gave the trainer and owners Al Adiyat Racing a treble on the day.

His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of The Bahrain Turf Club said, “Today we have witnessed another memorable renewal of His Majesty The King's Cup. Congratulations to Godolphin, to trainer Saeed bin Suroor and to jockey Danny Tudhope following their success with Passion And Glory.

“It is testament to the growth and development of the sport that horseracing in Bahrain now regularly attracts world-class horses and world-renowned trainers and jockeys such as Saeed bin Suroor and Danny Tudhope. And I would like to congratulate His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on his success with Passion And Glory and thank him for his on-going support of racing in the Kingdom.

“As shown by today's racing, this season we have taken another step towards fulfilling our ambition to establish Bahrain as a home for top-class international horseracing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only our overseas visitors but also the Kingdom's own jockeys, trainers and owners, without whom such progress would not be possible.”
