Kentucky Oaks Winner Secret Oath Impressive in Azeri Return

Last year's GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath (f, 4, Arrogate–Absinthe Minded, by Quiet American) returned to the races in style in Saturday's GII Azeri S. at Oaklawn.

The 7-5 second choice raced one from the back rounding the clubhouse turn after exiting from the one hole. Racing under a nice hold down the backstretch, she launched her familiar, wide sweeping move on the far turn, hit the front under confident handling in the stretch and had 2 3/4 lengths to spare over favored MGISW Clairiere (Curlin), last seen just missing by a head while finishing third in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland Nov. 5. Interstatedaydream (Classic Empire) was third.

“She's got such a long stride,” said D. Wayne Lukas, who also trained the race's brilliant namesake Azeri. “She just kicks. When she kicks it in like that, her stride increases about four feet. She just eats that ground up. It's impressive to watch it. I thought she would run a big one today. I have so much respect for Steve Asmussen's filly (Clairiere). I was confident she would run a big one, but when you've got a field this tough, you've got to beat them. I just thought she would throw a real good one today because I did everything I wanted to do with her coming into it. I didn't have to adjust a work or anything. I did it all when I wanted to. I thought I had her tuned.”

Lukas added that Secret Oath will start next in the $1-million GI Apple Blossom H. at Oaklawn Apr. 15.

Winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione added, “I didn't want to rush her off her feet. I know what kind of kick she has, so I just let her kind of find herself in the place she wanted to be. Going into the (second turn), she tried to go about the three-eighths pole. Just took a little hold of her and she came right back to me. Swung her out coming down the stretch. Showed her the whip once and she finished the job well.”

Secret Oath improved her record to four-for-five in Hot Springs. She was an impressive winner of last term's GIII Honeybee S. and Martha Washington S., and was also third as the favorite against the boys in the GI Arkansas Derby.

The Azeri ended a five-race losing streak for Secret Oath. Second behind champion 3-year-old filly Nest (Curlin) in Saratoga's GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. last summer, the GI Preakness S. fourth-place finisher concluded her sophomore campaign with a fifth-place finish after leading in the stretch in the Distaff.

Pedigree Notes:

Secret Oath is one of four graded winners, all Grade I winners, for the gone-too-soon Arrogate.

Robert Mitchell and his wife Stacy purchased Secret Oath's then 10-year-old second dam Rockford Peach for $36,000 in foal to Running Stag at the Adena Springs sale at Fasig-Tipton in 2001, and clearly the best of the 11 foals she produced for Briland Farm was her fourth to hit the ground, Absinthe Minded.

Also trained by Lukas, the daughter of Quiet American won two renewals of the Bayakoa S. and the Pippin S. at Oaklawn and was placed twice in the GI Apple Blossom H. Outside of Arkansas, Absinthe Minded was narrowly runner-up in the 2011 GII Shuvee H. and third in that year's GII Molly Pitcher S. All totaled, the mare won six times from 35 starts and bankrolled over $607,000.

The fourth foal for her dam, Secret Oath was cataloged through Bluewater Sales as hip 1242 to the 2020 Keeneland September Sale, but a bit of fate intervened and she was withdrawn.

Absinthe Minded is the dam of an unraced 3-year-old filly by Medaglia d'Oro. She was most recently covered by Unbridled's Song's son Liam's Map in 2022.

Tapit Trice Wins Tampa Bay Derby With Strong Last-To-First Rally, Provides Pletcher Sixth Victory In Classic Prep

Tapit Trice rallied from last and stormed down the stretch with ground-devouring strides to win the $400,000 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) by a comfortable two lengths Saturday at the Oldsmar, Fla. track.

With Luis Saez aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher, the Tapit colt was making his stakes debut and covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.37 on a fast track. The win marked his second in as many starts this season as he came into Saturday's race off an allowance-optional claiming win over stablemate Shesterkin Feb. 4 at Gulfstream Park.

Classic Car Wash was second, and Classic Legacy checked in third, 1 1/4 lengths back. Shesterkin finished seventh in the 12-horse field.

The Tampa Bay Derby is a Kentucky Derby qualifier and Tapit Trice earned 50 points toward eligibility for the May 6 classic at Churchill Downs.
Owned by Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm and Antony Beck's Gainesway Stable, Tapit Trice returned $3 for the win. He has a 3-0-1 record from four career starts.

Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds, Tapit Trice was produced by Dunkirk mare Danzatrice. Whisper Hill purchase him for $1.3 million at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Pletcher notched his sixth Tampa Bay Derby win following  Tapwrit (2017)  Destin (2016), Carpe Diem (2015), Verrazano (2013), and Limehouse (2004).

Frank’s Rockette Takes Hurricane Bertie By Wide Margin

Frank Fletcher Racing Operations Inc.'s Frank's Rockette won like a 2-5 favorite should in Saturday's $125,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream Park, breezing to an easy eight-length victory.

The Hurricane Bertie, a 6½-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares, headlined a 12-race program that also featured the $100,000 Captiva Island, a five-furlong turf sprint for older fillies and mares won by Michael Vaccarezza's Little Jewel, a 5-year-old little sister to multi-millionaire Little Mike.

Frank's Rockette, a multiple graded stakes winner with more than $1.2 million in earnings, was coming off a 12 ÂĽ-length triumph in the Dec. 31 Sugar Swirl (G3) at Gulfstream.

“Our filly did her job. She loves this racetrack,” Mott said. “We had options to go some other places but given the fact that she won her so easily last time and she likes the track, we just felt, 'Bring her back.' Unfortunately, the owner is from Arkansas and would like to see his horses run in Hot Springs. This was my first option, and he let us do it.”

Frank's Rockette rated in third behind pacesetter R Adios Jersey and Fire on Time along the backstretch and into the far turn. Entering the turn into the homestretch, jockey Junior Alvarado swung three-wide aboard Frank's Rockette three-wide and the 5-year-old daughter of Into Mischief picked up the bit and swept past her overmatched rivals on her way to a geared-down triumph.

“I'm pretty lucky, to be honest, to be in this spot and get back on her,” said Alvarado, who rode the homebred mare for the first time since finishing second on her in the 2021 Sugar Swirl. “She's a pretty talented mare and she showed it today. She has a love for this track, too, and she showed it.”

Frank's Rockette ran 6½ furlongs in 1:16.81 to earn a decisive victory over R Adios Jersey, who set fractions of :22.46 and :45.26 before yielding to the Mott trainee. R. Adios Jersey held on for second but was subsequently disqualified and placed third for interfering with Drifaros, who was placed second.

Frank's Rockette, who has three wins and a second in four starts at Gulfstream, collected her 11th career victory Saturday. A homebred, she was produced by the Indian Charlie mare Rocket Twentyone.

“The races are going to get tougher,” Mott said. “Whether we put her in against the big girls, I don't know.”
