Champion Verry Elleegant Scans In Foal To Sea The Stars

Australian Horse of the Year Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) is in foal to the Aga Khan Studs' stalwart Sea The Stars (Ire).

“It's the first scan but things are looking good and she's on her way in the next part of her life,” co-owner Brae Sokolski told Racing.com.

“She foals down there in the new year in 2024 and then she will be served Southern Hemisphere time later that year by a yet unconfirmed stallion and then come back to Australia in foal.”

An 11-time Group 1 winner, the dark bay will be based at Norelands Stud in Ireland for 18 months. The resulting foal will be raced in the United Kingdom. From four Northern Hemisphere starts, all in group company, the stayer's best performance was a third in the G2 Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp last September.

“This Sea The Stars foal will stay in the UK and be trained there,” Sokolski said. “We want to go to another elite European stallion with Verry Elleegant. We only get one more crack at it as when she comes home it will be all local stallions so, given she is over there, we'll get her served Southern Hemisphere time and then bring her home.”

Highly Successful ‘Ship & Win’ Program Returns To Del Mar For 2023

Del Mar's “Ship & Win” program, the track's highly successful magnet for attracting out-of-state runners to compete at the shore oval, will be on deck for the 13th consecutive season when racing returns at the seaside starting July 21.

Since its inception in 2011, “S&W” has drawn more than 2,400 equine competitors to Del Mar, which has helped it regularly establish itself as one of the nation's top tracks for field size both in the summer and during its fall session. Additionally, the popular program has had a solid ripple effect for the other major racing facilities throughout the state as a majority of its imported “S&W” runners stay on in California to continue their careers.

The current “S&W” enhancements include a $5,000 first-start bonus and a 50% purse supplement for all dirt runners. Further, turf horses earn a $4,000 starter bonus and a 40% purse supplement.

The purse supplements extend to any additional starts during the summer meet and hold true for first through fifth finishers in their races. Also, should a “S&W” horse be claimed out of its first outing and subsequently run back at the session, the original owner will receive all earned supplements.

“This program has proven to be an absolute home run for Del Mar and all of California racing,” said David Jerkens, a Del Mar vice president and its racing secretary. “Our fields grow stronger each summer with “Ship & Win” horses and then the lion's share of those runners stay on and race at other venues in the state. Our local owners and trainers bring us most of these imports, so that provides beneficial enhancements for our regular backers.”

Here are the simple guidelines for “S&W” horses:

  • Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months and must have made their last start outside the state.
  • First-time starters do not qualify.
  • Purse bonuses will extend to a horse which makes its initial “S&W” start in May or June at Santa Anita. Further, that same horse may make up to two starts during that period and still have its purse benefits extended through the Del Mar meet.
  • Guaranteed $5,000 check for any qualified starter in their first “S&W” outing on dirt; Stakes races included.
  • 50% bonus applied to same qualified horse's purse earnings for EVERY dirt start during the summer meet.
  • Guaranteed $4,000 check for any qualified starter in their first “S&W” outing on turf; Stakes races included.
  • 40% bonus applied to same qualified starter's purse earnings for EVERY turf start during the summer meet.
  • Purse bonus applies to earning for places 1-5, excluding stakes races. If a “S&W” horse is acquired after its initial “S&W” start, the original owner will receive purse bonuses for subsequent outings throughout the summer stand.
  • Horses that make their original Del Mar “S&W” start will remain eligible for bonus money for their first start at the Santa Anita Fall meet, provided the horse makes only one start at Del Mar.
  • DMTC reserves, at is sole discretion, the right to determine eligibility for qualified starters.

Those with questions about “S&W” are asked to contact David Jerkens at (858) 792-4230, or at david@dmtc.com

“This signature, innovative and popular program has increased the horse population and field size for every owner in California,” said Thoroughbred Owners of California chairman Gary Fenton. “DMTC continues to be a leader in positive and innovative changes within our industry.”

Earlier this month Del Mar announced a robust purse and stakes schedule befitting its standing among the nation's foremost racing headquarters. Its 31-day session will include purse payouts of over $800,000 a day and its stakes schedule will consist of 39 events worth $8,275,000.

The iconic track's 84th summer season will go from Friday, July 21 until Sunday, September 10 with most of its racing days starting with its traditional 2 p.m. first post.

McPeek-Trained Smile Happy, Creative Minister Return To Races Thursday At Oaklawn

Thursday's eighth race at Oaklawn, courtesy of trainer Kenny McPeek, has a 2022 Triple Crown flavor.

McPeek is scheduled to send out the top two program choices (Smile Happy and Creative Minister) in the $106,000 allowance for older horses at 1 1/8 miles. Smile Happy, a Grade 2 winner for Lucky Seven Stable, hasn't started since finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby last May at Churchill Downs. Creative Minister, stakes-placed for Fern Circle Stables, finished third in the Preakness and fifth in the Belmont Stakes. Creative Minister hasn't started since finishing sixth in an Oct. 20 allowance race at Keeneland.

“Unfortunately, they both fell under the same allowance condition and they were both ready at the same time,” McPeek said Tuesday afternoon. “Reluctant to run them against each other, but really, development-wise, it's good for both horses.”

Smile Happy, the 2-1 program favorite, and Creative Minister (3-1) have both been based this winter and early spring at Fair Grounds.

Smile Happy was among the country's leading Kentucky Derby prospects last year after winning both starts 2, including the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles, by a combined 8 ¾ lengths. After finishing second in two major Kentucky Derby preps to open his 3-year-old campaign, Smile Happy (bone bruising, McPeek said) didn't run again in 2022 after being beaten 10 lengths by Rich Strike in Kentucky Derby.

“We turned him out for a little while at my farm in Lexington and when he brought him back, I still wasn't happy with the way he was moving,” McPeek said. “Then we turned him out again and just let him sit for a while. He's come back this time good. These things sometimes take a little longer than you think. Really nice horse and excited about him as a 4-year-old, as well as Creative Minister.”

After finishing third in the Preakness, Creative Minister also finished third in the $135,000 Curlin Stakes July 29 at Saratoga, third in the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) Aug. 23 at Parx and second, beaten a nose, in the $275,000 Bourbon Trail Stakes at 1 3/16 miles Sept. 24 at Churchill Downs.

“We just stopped on him,” McPeek said. “He had run winter, spring, summer, fall and it was just a good period for him to grow up a little bit.”

McPeek said if Smile Happy and Creative Minister perform well Thursday, they could be considered for upcoming races at Oaklawn, Keeneland or Churchill Downs.

Probable post time for Thursday's eighth race is 4:22 p.m. (Central).

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Races From Aqueduct, Oaklawn, Rillito

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday, featuring racing from Aqueduct Racetrack, Oaklawn Park, and Rillito Park.

The Cross Country Pick 5 requires bettors to pick the winner of five select races from tracks across the country. The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country with each week featuring a mandatory payout of the net pool. The Cross Country Pick 5, boasting a low 15 percent takeout, offers sequences with races from Aqueduct Racetrack and partner tracks across the country.

The sequence begins at 5:00 p.m. Eastern in Race 8 from Aqueduct Racetrack. The allowance optional claimer will see a field of nine older New York-bred horses square off around a one-turn mile. Sundaeswithsandy will look to build upon an impressive 13 3/4-length romp for a $25,000 tag last out. The son of Keen Ice, who makes his first start for trainer James Bentley Begg after being haltered out of his last effort, is in search of his fifth lifetime victory. Steep opposition will be provided by the Mark Hennig-trained Ouster, who has finished no worse than fourth in eight career starts, and Whittington Park, who has finished first or third in his last four starts for conditioner Jeremiah Englehart.

The action heads south to Oaklawn Park for Race 8 [5:22 p.m.], the Grade 3, $200,000 Whitmore at six furlongs for older horses.

The in-form Tejano Twist is in search of his first graded victory for trainer Chris Hartman on the heels of a runner-up effort to multiple graded stakes-winner Gunite in the King Cotton on January 28 at Oaklawn. The Practical Joke gelding has finished on-the-board in each of his last five outings, including a three-race win streak from October to January. Hartman will also saddle the stakes-placed Edge to Edge for his graded debut after posting triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures for back-to-back scores at the Hot Springs oval. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen also sends out two formidable contenders in Grade 3-placed Cogburn and graded stakes-winner Morello.

The third leg will see sophomore fillies sprinting six furlongs at the Big A in the $100,000 Cicada [Race 9, 5:32 p.m.], headlined by the returning Hot Little Thing as she makes her first start in over five months for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. The Indiana-bred daughter of Army Mule was a 14 1/2-length winner of the six-furlong Back Home Again in September at Horseshoe Indianapolis and will cut back in distance after finishing a distant third in the Miss Indiana in October traveling one mile and 70 yards over the same oval. The streaking Tappin Josie will look to score her fourth consecutive victory for trainer Horacio De Paz while Downtown Mischief will vie to remain perfect after winning her first two lifetime starts for trainer Linda Rice.

The penultimate leg heads back to Oaklawn for Race 9 [5:54 p.m.], the Grade 3, $500,000 Essex Handicap for older horses traveling 1 1/16 miles.

Grade 1-winner Classic Causeway scratched from Saturday's Grade 3 Challenger at Tampa Bay Downs in favor of this spot as he makes his first start over the main track since June for trainer Kenny McPeek. The son of Giant's Causeway, who captured the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational on turf in July at Belmont Park, returns from a five-month respite that came after a close sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Bryan Station at Keeneland. The talented field includes Last Samurai, winner of the last-out Grade 3 Razorback over the same course and distance for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, multiple graded stakes-winner Tawny Port for conditioner Brad Cox, and the evergreen multiple graded stakes-winning Rated R Superstar for trainer Martin Villafranco.

The sequence concludes at Rillito Park in Race 5 [6:14 p.m.], the $20,000 Liz Bracken Memorial for sophomore fillies sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs. Last out maiden-winner Tecate Gold is in search of her first victory facing winners after graduating for an $8,500 tag on February 20 for conditioner Jeff Metz. The Juan Pablo Silva-trained Tootufftoswallow ships in by way of California after finishing fifth in an optional claimer on March 3 at Santa Anita. She was a winner on debut in a January 2 maiden claimer over the same course.

The race is named in memory Liz Bracken, who graduated from the University of Arizona and worked at NYRA for 16 years. In 2021, NYRA launched a scholarship in her honor for students in the Racetrack Industry Program, which supports students who aspire to work in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. The scholarship will award a total of $10,000 – $5,000 for the fall semester and $5,000 for the spring.
