BC Juvenile Winner Texas Red Moves To Ohio’s Buckeye Stallion Station

Texas Red, the winner of the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, has relocated to Buckeye Stallion Station, a subsidiary of Hurst Racing Stables, in Hubbard, Ohio for the 2023 breeding season.

The 11-year-old son of Afleet Alex will stand for an advertised fee of $3,000, with special considerations available.

Texas Red began his stallion career at Crestwood Farm in Kentucky during the 2017 breeding season. He has sired four crops of racing age, with 36 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $2.3 million.

His leading runners to date include My Girl Red, winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar, along with Grade 3-placed Someone Said So and stakes-placed runners Somuchsugar and Texas Red Bel.

During his own racing career, Texas Red won three of nine starts for earnings of $1,767,300, racing for owners Erich Brehm, Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels, Keith Desormeaux, and Gene Voss. Desormeaux also trained the horse.

Texas Red broke his maiden as a 2-year-old in his third career start at Del Mar, then he finished third behind eventual champion 2-year-old and future Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Texas Red then scored the biggest victory of his career in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, also at Santa Anita, where he rallied from last to win by a commanding 6 1/2 lengths at odds of 13-1. The effort earned him a spot as an Eclipse Award finalist as champion 2-year-old male.

At three, Texas Red returned to the races with a runner-up effort in the G2 San Vicente Stakes, but a foot abscess knocked him off the Kentucky Derby trail. His summer comeback started with a second in the G3 Dwyer Stakes, and it was highlighted by a victory in the G2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, where he held off Grade 1 winner Frosted by a half-length.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Texas Red is out of the Grade 3-placed Chilean stakes-winning Jeune Homme mare Ramatuelle, whose five foals to race are all winners. He hails from the family of Chilean champion Nuevo Maestro, Le Ken, and Via Sixtina.

Ted Durcan Joins MyRacehorse As Bloodstock Consultant

Former Classic-winning jockey Ted Durcan has been appointed as the UK and Ireland bloodstock consultant for MyRacehorse.  Durcan will select horses for the microshare syndicate from both public auctions and privately.

Durcan, who runs Durcan Bloodstock, said, “I am delighted to have been asked to join MyRacehorse to help the team source some exciting and fun horses for the season ahead.

“MyRacehorse gives everybody the chance to see how this amazing sport works from the inside out rather than the outside in. This is something that normally would not be achievable for most people, but MyRacehorse makes it happen.

“Being involved in racehorse ownership is fun, exciting and social. There are highs and lows but it's the whole journey that makes this sport special, and it's important to find new ways to share that journey.”

Kate Hardy, Director of Operations at MyRacehorse, added, “We are thrilled to have Ted working with MyRacehorse as we grow our stable here in Ireland and the UK.

“His extensive knowledge of the sport, and the unique perspective he has as an ex-jockey when it comes to evaluating form and conformation are invaluable to MyRacehorse.

“Ted's track record and reputation speaks for itself, and we are extremely fortunate to have him join our team.”

HISA Names Samuel Reinhardt Assistant General Counsel

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) has announced that Samuel Reinhardt will be joining the organization as Assistant General Counsel, effective Tuesday, March 21.

Reinhardt will work alongside Outside General Counsel John Roach to support the organization's day-to-day operations regarding the safety and integrity of horse racing.

A native Kentuckian, Reinhardt joins HISA from the law firm Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC (SKO). At SKO, Reinhardt accrued experience litigating a variety of equine-related matters, including cases regarding the sale of horses, claims asserted against Thoroughbred auction houses, and disputes over wagering anomalies. He has been recognized on numerous occasions for his legal work, in particular by nationally renowned, peer-reviewed publication Best Lawyers.

“Sam's experience with state and federal equine industry litigation as well as his passion for the advancement of Thoroughbred racing makes him a great addition to our team,” said HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus. “We look forward to having Sam join us as we continue to implement important safety, operational, and integrity standards for our sport across the country.”

About the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority

Established when the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act was signed into federal law in 2020, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) is responsible for drafting and enforcing uniform safety and integrity rules in Thoroughbred racing in the U.S. Overseen by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), HISA was created to implement, for the first time, a national, uniform set of rules applicable to every Thoroughbred racing participant and racetrack facility. HISA is comprised of two programs: the Racetrack Safety Program, which went into effect July 1, 2022, and the Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program, which is anticipated to go into effect on March 27, 2023.

The Racetrack Safety Program includes operational safety rules and national racetrack accreditation standards that seek to enhance equine welfare and minimize equine and jockey injury. The Program expands veterinary oversight, imposes surface maintenance and testing requirements, enhances jockey safety, regulates riding crop use, and implements voided claim rules, among other important measures.

The ADMC Program will create a centralized testing and results management process and apply uniform penalties for violations efficiently and consistently across the United States. These rules and enforcement mechanisms will be administered by a new independent agency, the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU), established by Drug Free Sport International (DFS). HIWU will oversee testing, educate stakeholders on the new program, accredit laboratories, investigate potential ADMC violations and prosecute any such violations.
