What Will You Do When Online Gambling Is Illegal?

As you may have heard, Congress has taken a big step toward banning most online gambling.

Instead of trying to outlaw gambling sites, which would be impossible to do since almost all are outside of the US, they are trying to make processing or handling payments illegal. The result, gamblers would not be able to use credit cards, debit cards, or even make direct transfers from US bank accounts to fund their accounts.

Supporters of the ban claim the Internet’s widespread availability makes it too easy to gamble and creates betting addictions and financial problems.

Online gambling sites are estimated to take in $12 billion annually. Half of this $12 billion comes from gamblers in the US. Critics of this proposed law argued that regulating the industry and collecting taxes would be more effective than outlawing it. Prohibition didn’t work for alcohol. It won’t work for gambling.

The government had an opportunity to regulate online gambling and take advantage of the tax revenue. A recent study estimates online poker alone, if regulated and taxed, could net the federal government $3.3 billion each year.

But instead they’ve turned the financial institutions into the police. They also propose to increase the maximum penalty for violations from two to five years in prison.

The two Republican representatives who sponsored the bill, Bob Goodlatte of Virginia and Jim Leach of Iowa managed to slip in exemptions for the horse racing industry and state lotteries. Not really fair to allow online lotteries and Internet betting on horse racing while cracking down on other kinds of sports betting, casino games and card games like poker.

In many countries the government has chosen to regulate online gambling rather than ban it. It’s a lot more practical and besides, it is a form of recreation for many people.

Fortunately there are still some thinking congressmen in Washington who have doubts about the bill’s effectiveness and have gone so far as to call it a feel-good piece of legislation. A bill more about news-making than lawmaking.

A more effective approach would be to allow the industry to come to the United States and regulate it. This is a situation everyone who is or has gambled online will want to keep an eye on.

Freedom Flyer Wires Santa Anita’s Wishing Well For First Stakes Victory, Provides Dettori Fourth Win On Card

Trainer Leonard Powell's Freedom Flyer was all business on the front end at Santa Anita as she showed the way en route to a neck victory in the $100,000 Wishing Well Stakes and thus provided jockey Frankie Dettori with his fourth win from seven mounts on the Saturday card.

Run at about 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course, Freedom Flyer stopped the clock at 1:12.34.

Breaking sharply from her outside post position in a field reduced by three scratches to six older fillies and mares, Freedom Flyer shook off Stella Noir at the dirt crossing and then held race favorite Big Summer and Bay Storm off late for her first career stakes win.

“I'm very happy about her performance,” said Powell. “She was sharp out of the gate. I was very happy because she was extremely game for the last eighth of a mile, she had challenges from multiple horses and she fought them all the way.”

Although she was most recently a close third down the hill in the Las Cienegas Stakes (G3) Jan. 2, Freedom Flyer was dismissed at 7-1 and paid $16.40 to win.

A 5-year-old mare by Constitution out of the Carson City mare Rebuke, Freedom Flyer is owned by Marsha Naify. Now two for four down Santa Anita's unique hillside layout, she improved her overall race record to 4-5-4 from 21 starts. With Wishing Well's winner's prize of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $272,120.

“You'll have to go back a few years since I've had four winners in one day, amazing,” said Dettori, a European legend who has announced his illustrious career will come to a conclusion following the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita in November. “I had some good rides, they all ran super. (This) filly, she's very game and I was eager for the wire to come.

“They were coming from every direction and we managed to hang on…It's been a super day. All the horses and all the people, they are all for it and they have been fantastic.”

The lone California-bred in the field, Big Summer was about two lengths off the lead at the dirt crossing, wheeled five-deep turning for home ran out of real estate in a big effort. Off as the 9-5 favorite with Joe Bravo, she finished a neck in front of third-place finisher Bay Storm.

Ridden by Kazushi Kimura, Bay Storm was close to the pace when bumped hard by Stella Noir at the half mile pole and did well to run third.

Fractions on the race were :22.26, :44.35, and 1:06.48.

Ocean Atlantique Powers Wire To Wire To Land Dust Commander At Turfway Park

Three Diamonds Farm's 6-year-old gelding Ocean Atlantique cruised to a front-running 5 ¼-length victory in Saturday night's $125,000 Dust Commander Stakes at Turfway Park.

Trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Walter Rodriguez, Ocean Atlantique completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.75 over the Tapeta surface.

Ocean Atlantique and Rodriguez left little doubt on their plan from the break and took command of the Dust Commander field into the first turn through a solid opening quarter-mile fraction of :23.85. Up the backstretch, Ocean Atlantique began to open up on second-place Accredit and, around the far turn, following a half-mile split of :47.65 and six-furlong clocking of 1:11.70, Ocean Atlantique skittered away to an insurmountable four-length advantage while under a hand ride from Rodriguez.

Camp Hope and 8-5 favorite Beatbox had a spirited battle for second where Camp Hope got the better of last year's Dust Commander winner by a scant nose. It was another 3 ½ lengths back to Grade 1 winner In Love followed by Fancy Liquor, Harlan Estate, Price Talk, Accredit, and Lincoln City. Mejthaam was an early scratch.

Ocean Atlantique rewarded his backers $19.84 for the win.

Ocean Atlantique improved his record to 4-4-2 from 20 career starts and boosted his career purse earnings to $276,120. The 6-year-old gelding is by American Pharoah out of the Giant's Causeway mare Tare Green. He was bred in Kentucky by Indian Creek.

Brad Cox Hits Career Milestone 2,000th Win At Fair Grounds

Trainer Brad Cox sent out his 2,000th career North American winner Saturday at Fair Grounds, saddling 1-2 favorite Bishops Bay to a three-quarters of a length debut victory over stablemate First Mission in Race 5.

“I want to thank the team, the owners, and the horses,” Cox said. “It's been a great run and it's been a long road. I'm glad to have two colts who showed up here and ran well, I'm proud of both. I think they have bright futures.”

A 3-year-old Uncle Mo colt, Bishops Bay is campaigned by Spendthrift Farm, Steve Landers Racing, Martin Schwartz, Michael Dubb, Ten Strike Racing, Jim Bakke, Titletown Racing, Kueber Racing, Big Easy Racing, Winners Win, Michael Caruso, and breeder WinStar Farm.

A 42-year-old native of Louisville, Cox closed to within three victories of the milestone entering Saturday. Beginning with Comparative in Race 2, then Merlazza in Race 4, the Cox barn quickly won with their first two entries on the card. Having two entries in Race 5, there was no doubt in the homestretch that Cox was about to hit 2,000–the only question was which horse would be the one to do it for him as his other entry First Mission headed Bishops Bay with a sixteenth of mile to go. With Florent Geroux aboard, the Bishops Bay battled back against his stablemate, beating him to the wire.

Steve Asmussen had two entries in Race 5 as well, and sitting at 9,999 career wins, he and Cox were in the paddock at Fair Grounds with the potential to saddle their milestone winner. After posting a win at both Sam Houston and Oaklawn earlier in the day, Asmussen was unable to score another.

“It's an amazing number that Steve is about to hit,” Cox said. “I have no shot of catching him. He works as hard as anybody. To do what we do every day, trying to develop horses, it's a tough game. To do it for as long as he has, as well as he has, it's amazing.”

Cox started working in racing under trainers Burk Kessinger, and Jimmy Baker. Later he became the assistant trainer under Dallas Stewart. Cox started his first horse in 2004, and has since gone on to win each leg of the Triple Crown and the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) twice. He has racked up nine Breeders Cup victories, including the Classic with Knicks Go (2021) and the Distaff twice with Monomoy Girl (2018 and 2020).

“I knew we were getting close a couple of races back, and I'm glad to give it over with,” Cox said. “Honestly, I just wanted to get it over with.”

Later on the card, Cox would score a 13-1 upset with Angel of Empire in the Risen Star (G2), giving him four wins on the day.
