‘Powerful Shoulder And Plenty Of Leg’: First Foal Is A Filly For Rushie

Blue Star Racing is proud to announce the arrival of Rushie's first foal – a filly out of Julia's Pride (Proud Citizen x Lucy Valentine, by Langfuhr) – bred by Jay Goodwin, Susan Montanye, and Andy Pickerell. Born in Florida, the filly arrived Jan. 31, 2023.

“We couldn't be more pleased to congratulate the breeders on a really spectacular Rushie filly. She looks to have his powerful shoulder and plenty of leg – which is exactly what we were hoping Rushie would pass along to his progeny,” said Dex Comardelle of Blue Star Racing. “This is a great start to the season.”

Florida-bred Rushie began his stallion career at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida in 2022 and is now standing at Blue Star Racing in Scott, La., for the 2023 breeding season at $4,000 live foal. The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association provides a lucrative breeding incentive program, making it very attractive to breeders outside its borders, as well as within the state.

From the first crop of Liam's Map, Rushie won the 2020 Grade 2 Pat Day Mile Stakes and placed in other graded races, including the G1 Santa Anita Derby and G2 Blue Grass Stakes.

His sire, Liam's Map (Unbridled's Song x Miss Macy Sue, by Trippi) is a two-time Grade 1 winner of more than $1.3 million. The Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner had six wins and two seconds from eight starts with a total of six triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures – topping his career with 114 Beyers in his G1 Woodward and G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile victories.

Rushie's first dam, Conquest Angel (Colonel John / More Oats Please, by Smart Strike) was a $300,000 OBS April 2-year-old in training purchase. She is by multiple Grade 1 winner millionaire Colonel John (Tiznow x Sweet Damsel, by Turkoman).

The new filly is out of Julia's Pride (Proud Citizen x Lucy Valentine, by Langfuhr) – a $90,000 2-year-old in training purchase at OBS. The filly's second dam – Lucy Valentine – is a multiple stakes-placed mare who was in the money eight out of nine starts.

The Friday Show Presented By Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance: ‘We Haven’t Solved The (Aftercare) Problem’

When the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance was established in 2012 with seed money from The Jockey Club, Keeneland, and Breeders' Cup, one of its goals was to establish sustainable funding upwards of $20 million a year from a wide swath of the industry.

A decade later, TAA – which both accredits and funds aftercare operations throughout the country – has fallen far short of that mark in annual funding.

In this week's Friday Show, TAA operations consultant Stacie Clark-Rogers joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills  to talk about the successes of the organization and the challenges it faces, both in real terms and perceptions that many people have about aftercare.

“We haven't solved the problem and a lot of people would like to think we have,” said Clark-Rogers, calling the issue an “Achilles heel” for the industry.

“What we're trying to do here is improve the life of the horse, improve the life of the sport, and improve the life of the business and the opportunity for us to work in this industry,” she said. “It's not a touchy-feely, cute thing, aftercare,  It's part of our business.”

Friday Weather Cancellations: Aqueduct, Charles Town, Meadowlands, Penn National

Live racing has been cancelled on Friday, Feb. 3, at the following racetracks: Aqueduct, Charles Town, Meadowlands, and Penn National.

Aqueduct

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has canceled live racing on Friday and Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack due to high winds and frigid temperatures forecast to impact the New York metropolitan area.

The National Weather Service (NWS), which aligns with forecasts provided by NYRA's independent weather services, is calling for wind chill values between zero and 10 degrees on Friday with wind gusts up to 37 mph, while Saturday's forecast includes wind chill values between eight and 10 degrees with sustained high winds throughout the day.

As a result, NYRA has canceled Friday's eight-race card and Saturday's nine-race card in the interest of the safety of all participants. Aqueduct Racetrack will remain open for simulcasting on Friday and Saturday, and online wagering is available through www.NYRABets.com.

Charles Town

Charles Town has canceled its Friday night card as frigid temperatures and windy conditions are forecasted to move through the area. With temperatures expected to be in the teens with wind chill values as low as -2 degrees throughout the night, the decision was made to cancel in the best interest of all participants.

As a result of the cancellation, Charles Town will add Wednesday, March 1 to its racing calendar.

Live racing is slated to resume on Saturday, February 4 at its standard first race post time of 7:00 P.M. ET.

Meadowlands

Due to tonight's freezing temperatures, the SBOANJ and the Meadowlands Racetrack have decided to cancel live racing for tonight, Friday, February 3.

The track remains open for simulcasting and sports wagering.
