Godolphin Double In Bahrain As Turf Series Continues

Trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey Richard Mullen teamed up to give Godolphin a racing double in Bahrain. The first win came in the £60,000 Anchorman Cup when King Of Conquest (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) broke the track record to give the 'Boys in Blue' their first victory in this season's Bahrain Turf Series. They would win the Listed Crown Prince's Cup later on the card with Warren Point (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Mullen settled his mount just off the pace and when asked, the 4-year-old exhibited the proper turn-of-foot to win by a length.

“We hoped stepping up King of Conquest to 9-furlongs would suit him and bring about further improvement which it did,” said Appleby. “The ground was quick enough for him, so it was a brave performance.”

In the second Bahrain Turf Series race of the day, the Hawar Cup, Deep Intrigue (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) bounced back to form. Trained in England by Mark Johnston, his new outfit helmed by Hesham Al Haddad, brought him back after more than a year off to win with young Omani jockey Anas bin Salim Al Siyabi in the irons.

Texas Casino Legislation Gives Licensing Edge To Racetracks

Texas State Rep. Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth) on Friday filed House Joint Resolution 97 that would authorize casino gaming at seven destination resorts across the state and require license applicants be limited to racetrack associations or designees of those associations.

The legislation seeks to amend the Texas Constitution and give Texans the opportunity to vote on the issue this November. State Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) previously filed a similar resolution in the Senate.

“Polling over the last year makes it clear that more than 85 percent of Texans want the right to vote on this issue, Republicans and Democrats alike,” said Geren. “It is high time that the legislature listens to the voters and allow them to decide this issue.”

If passed and approved in a statewide vote, the casinos would be regulated by a newly created Texas Gaming Commission. Geren projects the casinos would create tens of thousands of jobs, billions of dollars in economic development through tourism, and billions more in tax revenue to state and local governments.

The bill calls for two destination resort casinos in both the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas, plus one each in San Antonio, McAllen, and Corpus Christi metropolitan areas. Minimum investment in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston casinos is $2 billion each, with lower requirements for the other locations.

For each location, the bill requires initial license applicants be either a local racetrack association licensed on Jan. 1, 2022, or be an individual designated by a racetrack association. The three Class 1 tracks in the state are Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie (Dallas-Fort Worth area), Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, and Retama Park in San Antonio. The bill requires that any track that also secures a casino license maintain a number of live racing dates equal to or greater than the number of dates run in 2022.

Lone Star Park is owned by Global Gaming, a division of the Chickasaw Nation that operates Remington Park in Oklahoma City and the massive WinStar World Casino and Resort on the Texas border in southern Oklahoma – just 80 miles north of Lone Star Park.

Sam Houston Race Park is owned by Penn Entertainment, formerly Penn National Gaming, which also operates Retama Park.

Legalization of sports wagering is also included in Geren's bill, which states that it can only take place in a place and manner approved by the legislature. The bill calls for a 15 percent tax on gross casino gaming revenue and an unspecified tax on sports betting.

Churchill Downs Spring Stakes Schedule Worth $20.5 Million; 28 Stakes Purses Boosted For 2023

Led by the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) on Saturday, May 6, a record 50 stakes races that total $20.525 million will be staged at Churchill Downs Racetrack during the 44-day Spring Meet which spans April 29-July 3 (pending Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund final approval).

The record-breaking lineup features 28 stakes races that received significant boosts – including the Grade 1 Stephen Foster for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles which is now worth $1 million – and one new event, the $175,000 Chorleywood Overnight Stakes for 4-year-olds and up at 1 3/8 miles on turf on June 17.

Derby Week (April 29-May 6) kicks off the nine-week 149th Spring Meet with 22 stakes that total a record $13.125 million over the six-day stretch that culminates with the highlight of the annual racing calendar – the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) for 3-year-olds at 1 ¼ miles.

Nine of the 14 races on Kentucky Derby Day are stakes that total $7.65 million. In addition to the Derby, the first Saturday in May will showcase the $1 million Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic (G1); $750,000 Churchill Downs presented by Ford (G1); $750,000 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery (G1); $500,000 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G2); $500,000 Pat Day Mile (G2); $500,000 American Turf (G2); $500,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2); and $175,000 Knicks Go Overnight Stakes.

The Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic, which precedes the Derby, is the most lucrative of 22 stakes races scheduled to be run over the Matt Winn Turf Course.

One day earlier, Churchill Downs will host the $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) at 1 1/8 miles – the nation's most lucrative race for 3-year-old fillies. The seven stakes that day total $4.2 million: the Oaks; $750,000 La Troienne (G1); $600,000 Alysheba presented by Sentient Jet (G2); $500,000 Eight Belles (G2); $500,000 Edgewood presented by Forcht Bank (G2); $300,000 Modesty (G3); and $300,000 Unbridled Sidney presented by Sysco (Listed).

Derby Week stakes action that precedes Oaks and Derby days includes the $175,000 Roxelana Overnight Stakes on Opening Night, Saturday, April 29; $225,000 Mamzelle (Listed) and $175,000 Isaac Murphy Marathon Overnight Stakes on Champions Day, Wednesday, May 3; $300,000 Opening Verse (Listed); $200,000 Kentucky Juvenile and $175,000 St. Matthews Overnight Stakes on Thurby, May 4.

The $1 million Stephen Foster, which has been elevated to Grade I status as it annually attracts some of the nation's top older horses, is the centerpiece of an action-packed closing weekend. The 1 1/8-mile race anchors a six-race stakes bonanza that totals $2.475 million on Saturday, July 1, and includes the $400,000 Fleur de Lis (G2); $400,000 Wise Dan (G2); $225,000 American Derby (Listed); $225,000 Tepin; and $225,000 Kelly's Landing (Listed).

The first condition book of scheduled races features $120,000 maiden races while allowance races range from $127,000 to $148,000. There also will be a $300 bonus awarded to trainers whose starters finish fourth through last in all non-stakes races.

Spring Meet stall applications are due Friday, March 3. Following its annual closure for wintertime renovations, the Churchill Downs stable area will reopen Tuesday, March 21. The first day of training on the main dirt track will be Friday, March 24.

Trainer Reed Gets 5-Day Suspension For Bute Positive At Turfway

Trainer Eric Reed has been penalized with a five-day suspension and a $1,000 fine for a phenylbutazone positive in a $15,000 claiming winner last month at Turfway Park.

According to a Feb. 1 Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) stewards' ruling, the 2022 GI Kentucky Derby-winning trainer waived his right to a hearing and will serve his days Feb. 10-14 without lodging an appeal.

The ruling stated that the offense was Reed's second for a Class C positive within the past year. The KHRC classifies drugs on an A (most severe) to D (least severe) scale.

Phenylbutazone, also called Bute, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The test reported a finding of .62 micrograms per milliliter. According to rules posted on the KHRC website, bute is permitted on race day in concentrations at or less than three-tenths (0.3) micrograms per milliliter.

The disqualified winner was Golden Text (Danza), who wired the field in the fourth race Jan. 19, got claimed from owner Jackie Willoughby, Jr., and then had the claim voided because of the drug ruling.

Reed responded to a Friday voicemail request asking for his side of the story by texting that he had already issued statements to two other publications and did not wish to comment further.

Reed told Horse Racing Nation's Ron Flatter earlier in the week that, “I waived my rights because I know I gave the horse Bute paste [which takes longer to clear a horse's system]. I apologize to my friend Jim Willoughby, who owns the horse and had the win taken away. I also apologize to the racing industry. I used a Bute paste instead of the injection because he's the kind of horse who fights you every time you give him a shot.”
