Interpolate Takes Ruthless S. For Klaravich

Interpolate continued sire Into Mischief's wonderful weekend of wins, as the $300,000 FTSAUG purchase ran on nicely down the Aqueduct stretch to notch her first black-type victory for the red-lettered 'KS' of Klaravich.

After a debut fourth behind Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke) by 12 1/4-lengths Aug. 14 at The Spa, the bay filly broke her maiden Oct. 14 during the BAQ meet when she edged away from Royal Poppy (Classic Empire). Trainer Chad Brown then shipped her to Pennsylvania for the Parx Futurity Jan. 3, a race over a sloppy track in which she steadied at the start and could not recover in time to catch Girl Trouble (Fast Anna).

Looking for redemption in this stakes spot, the 9-2 shot tracked her former rivals down the backstretch from the second flight, as she ran alongside stablemate Senior Prank (Into Mischief). Rounding the far turn, the bay filly took the overland route, which positioned her in three path at the top of the lane, and under confident handling, she cleared past the eighth pole to win by 2 1/2-lengths over Girl Trouble.

“I wanted to give her [Interpolate] a chance,” said Brown after the race. “She didn't break well at Parx and then she was rushed into the race. It just unfolded pretty bad and you add in a sealed track into that, I put a line through it. I love how Eric [Cancel] filled in here [for the injured Kendrick Carmouche] and got her out of the gate but didn't rush her and let her find her stride.”

The winner's dam is a half to Shumoos (Distorted Humor), who was second in listed Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint, and her MGISW third dam produced GSW Cat Fighter (Storm Cat). Interpolate has a full-sister named Midway Mischief, and a 2-year-old half-brother by American Pharoah. Her dam also foaled a yearling colt by Tiz the Law and was bred back to him last year.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard: Flor De Sombra Tops Keystone State Incentive Earners In 2022

A good Pennsylvania-bred can make their connections far more than just purse money, and no horse exemplified that notion better than Flor de Sombra in 2022.

During her juvenile season, the daughter of Social Inclusion racked up $424,990 in earnings tied to her status as a horse born and sired in the Keystone State, including state-bred stakes purses, breeders' awards, and stallion awards. Those earnings were nearly $100,000 ahead of second-place Gordian Knot, who brought in $326,125 in state awards.

Flor de Sombra won four of five starts during her 2-year-old season, racing as a homebred for Joseph Imbesi and trained by Guadalupe Preciado.

The filly's season started on July 26, when she effortlessly disposed of a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight field at Parx Racing by a geared-down 7 3/4 lengths. She went off at odds of 9-1 that day, and she wouldn't see a price like that again in 2022.

Flor de Sombra's second act was just as impressive, taking the 5 1/2-furlong Miss Blue Tye Dye Stakes on Aug. 22 at Parx by two lengths as the heavy favorite, one again gearing down after leading in the stretch by six lengths. The filly suffered her lone defeat of the season when she finished third in the Imply Stakes at Parx on Sept. 24, weakening in the stretch after setting the pace.

After that setback, Flor de Sombra went on to roll off two more stakes victories to finish off her season, drawing off in the Finest City Stakes at Presque Isle Downs to win by two lengths on Oct. 24, and impressing once again with a 4 3/4-length triumph in the Shamrock Rose Stakes on Nov, 25 at Penn National.

Flor de Sombra earned $254,000 in Pennsylvania-bred stakes purses during her 2022 campaign, which comprised the majority of her state incentive earnings.

As the breeder of a state-bred and state-sired runner, Imbesi earned a 50 percent bonus on the purse earnings for Flor de Sombra's maiden special weight score, and a 40 percent bonus on purse for her other efforts on the year. This totaled $137,200 in breeder's awards, which was the most of any Pennsylvania horse last year.

Flor de Sombra is out of the winning Talent Search mare On a Star, who also raced as a homebred for Imbesi. The breeder purchased second dam Twiggles, an unraced daughter of Maria's Mon, for $5,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Imbesi had a stellar year in 2022, breeding three of the top four earners of incentive awards. Gordian Knot, by Social Inclusion, finished second in state incentive earnings, while Buy Land and See, a son of Cairo Prince out of the aforementioned Twiggles, was fourth with $214,320.

Also benefitting from Flor de Sombra's highlight season was the ownership group behind sire Social Inclusion, who earned $33,790 in stallion awards through the filly. Stallion owners can earn a 10 percent bonus on purse earnings when a Pennsylvania-bred and-sired runner finishes in the top three at a track within the state.

Social Inclusion finished sixth in the state by stallion awards earned in 2022, with $78,511. Flor de Sombra was once again the year's highest individual earner in that category.

Lucky Sweynesse Makes Amends In Centenary Sprint Cup

Having endured a luckless run when sixth to Wellington (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}) as the odds-on favourite in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in early December, Lucky Sweynesse (NZ) (Sweynesse {Aus}) was given a positive ride from Zac Purton and proved easily best in Sunday's G1 Centenary Sprint Cup at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Drawn widest in a field of eight, the 4-year-old was under a hustling ride from the bell, but was ultimately happy to allow Hong Kong Sprint runner-up Sight Success (Aus) (Magnus {Aus}) to dictate the running as Wellington found a good spot in the one-out and one-back position. Stationed right off the front-runner's hip as they raced into the final 600 metres, Lucky Sweynesse finally edged past a stubborn Sight Success deep inside the final furlong and held sway for a first top-level score. Wellington earned the photo for second while never a menace to the winner.

The victory was especially sweet for 65-year-old trainer Manfred Man, who would otherwise be facing compulsory retirement, but was given a reprieve earlier in the week by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

“I can only say thank you to the Jockey Club for giving me the chance, I will try my best,” said Man, sitting on 23 winners for the season. The conditioner saddled Eagle Regiment (Aus) (El Moxie) to consecutive wins in this event when it was contested over 1000 metres in 2012 and 2013.

Purton was pleased to help Man achieve his first international Group 1 as a trainer, and said: “There was nothing I could do in the [Hong Kong Sprint]. We drew the wrong gate [barrier three] and we just got locked away. I was just disappointed for Manfred. It was his big chance and it doesn't sit well with me at not being able to deliver for him, but hopefully today has gone some way to repaying him.”

Man indicated that connections would swerve any overseas targets in favour of the local sprint series, which continues with the G1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup next month. He could square off there with Wellington and, possibly, G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile hero California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

Lucky Sweynesse is the first Group 1 winner for his sire (by Lonhro {Aus}), a multiple Group 3 winner and twice placed at the highest level for Godolphin and trainer John O'Shea in the mid 2010s. Purchased for NZ$90,000 out of the 2020 NZB Ready To Run Sale, Lucky Sweynesse has a yearling half-brother by Contributer (Ire) and his dam most recently missed when bred back to Sweynese. Lucky Sweynesse's full-sister Signora Nera, third in the G1 Queensland Oaks, was represented by her first foal in 2022, a filly by Wootton Bassett (GB).

‘He Runs And Looks Like A Two-Turn Type Of Horse’: Juddmonte Maiden Winner Jungfrau Could Start On Road To Kentucky Derby In Withers Or Risen Star

Juddmonte's fourth generation homebred maiden winner Jungfrau could target a rescheduled edition of the $250,000 Withers (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack, now to be run on Saturday. The son of Arrogate is also possible for the following Saturday's Risen Star (G2) at Fair Grounds, according to Juddmonte General Manager Garrett O'Rourke.

The Withers is a local qualifier on the Road to the Kentucky Derby awarding the top-five finishers 20-8-6-4-2 qualifying points, while the Risen Star carries point value of 50-20-15-10-5. Both are nine-furlong events.

“We've talked about the Risen Star and the Withers. I don't know which one it's going to be yet, but both are in play,” O'Rourke said.

Jungfrau, a gray or roan son of Arrogate, broke his maiden on New Year's Eve at Gulfstream Park going 1 1/16 miles, finishing a nose behind Expect More but was elevated to first via disqualification. Passing the quarter pole, Expect More floated outwards into the path of an advancing Jungfrau, who still managed to find another gear in the stretch drive and hit the finish line in tandem with his foe.

The victory came after a pair of fourth-place efforts at maiden level on the NYRA circuit, finishing 3 1/2 lengths behind subsequent graded stakes winner Champions Dream on debut in September at Saratoga Race Course. In November, he finished 5 1/4 lengths in arrears of possible Withers aspirant Classic Catch going nine furlongs at the Big A.

Jungfrau is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who swept the exacta in Saturday's Derby-qualifying Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park with Rocket Can and New York-bred Shadow Dragon.

“He was the deserved winner last time because he was the one that did everything professionally,” O'Rourke said. “In the stretch, the horse that finished ahead of him to the wire swung out and gave him a big old bump which knocked him off his momentum. But he came back and was only beaten a nose and found another stride.”

O'Rourke said he believes Jungfrau will end up being a router.

“He runs and looks like a two-turn type of horse,” O'Rourke said. “He's a big, strong galloping horse. When he was an early 2-year-old, the exercise riders really liked him. He was just a bit quirky in his first couple of starts. He was a bit green, stopping and going. Bill says he's perfectly sound, he's just been a bit goofy I think.”

Boasting strong Juddmonte-influenced bloodlines, Jungfrau is out of the Tapit mare South Bank, whose dam Special Duty was a three-time Group 1 winner. His second dam Quest to Peak is a full sister to seven-time Grade 1-winning main track distaffer Sightseek and a half sister to multiple graded stakes winner Tates Creek, a dual Grade 1 winner on turf. She is a direct descendant of  1974 champion 3-year-old Chris Evert, a member of the Racing Hall of Fame and an influential broodmare.
