‘There Is Plenty Of Opportunity’ – Beeby Upbeat About February Sale

With a selection of quality Flat and National Hunt weanlings, 2-year-olds, horses in training and breeding stock on offer, there was little surprise that Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said the February Sale features something for every type of buyer on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first live sale of 2023 at Goffs, the February sale boasts 447 lots including supplementary entries, with leading pinhookers and buyers reported to be on the ground inspecting the stock on Tuesday.

Beeby described himself as optimistic of a productive trade over the two days, pointing to the opportunity available to every buyer, including the British and Irish pinhookers who have done notably well at the February Sale in recent years.

He said, “We have a good mixed catalogue and we are coming back after a strong autumn so we are hopeful of picking up where we left off. There are plenty of opportunities for pinhookers here and all of the professionals have been here on Monday inspecting the stock and working their way through the catalogue.

“There is a really good bunch of yearlings and there are some great opportunities for buyers here, as there has been in the past. Hopefully there will be plenty of interest. I expect that the fashionably-bred horses will sell well and it might get a bit skinnier underneath that but there will be plenty of opportunity for people, that's for sure.”

A good recent example of pinhookers picking out profit at this sale came last year when the WH Bloodstock team turned their €38,000 Kuroshio (Aus) colt into a £120,000 smash hit at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. That tremendous touch was secured in just over six months and Beeby says that he is confident similar opportunities await buyers this year.

He added, “I've looked at a good few horses today for Wednesday and Thursday, some who were meant to be here in November but didn't make it for minor reasons, so this sale is a good backup plan for the vendors of those types of horses as this is a vibrant sale. Pinhookers always make sure to be here for the February Sale and there is a notably strong contingent of English buyers present. We've a good selection of National Hunt youngsters, too, so it is a sale that will appeal to a broad spectrum of people. We are hoping for a good start to the year.”

The two-day February Sale kicks off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with a Berkshire (Ire) half-brother to recent Grade 1-placed Adamantly Chosen (Ire) and Galileo (Ire) mares Myzoon (Ire), Art Story (Ire), Music And Dance (GB), Sweet And Lovely (Ire) and Red Azalea (Ire) some of the interesting lots on offer.

Breeders’ Cup Winner Tuesday To Meet Into Mischief For First Mating

Tuesday, who won the 2022 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland in track record time, will be bred to record-setting Spendthrift Farm sire Into Mischief for her debut mating in 2023, Thoroughbred Daily News reports.

Racing for the Coolmore partnership and Georg Von Opel's Westerburg, Tuesday retired with three wins in 10 starts for earnings of $1,828,827.

After breaking her maiden in Ireland during her 3-year-old seasonal bow, the daughter of Galileo highlighted her summer with a win in the Group 1 Cazoo Oaks, to go along with in-the-money efforts in the English and Irish 1000 Guineas.

Following a pair of off-the-board starts in France, Tuesday shipped to the U.S. for her career finale in the Breeders' Cup, where she charged five-wide to win by one length over In Italian. She stopped the clock in 1:51.88, setting a new Keeneland track record for 1 3/16 miles over the turf.

An Irish-born homebred for Coolmore, Tuesday is out of the multiple Group 1-winning Danehill Dancer mare Lillie Langtry, making her a full-sister to G1 winners Minding and Empress Josephine.

Into Mischief capped off his fourth consecutive season as North America's leading general sire by earnings in 2022. His combined progeny earnings of $28,106,800 eclipsed the single-season record he set a year earlier, when he hit $24,411,267.

Into Mischief stands for an advertised fee of $250,000.

James Stierhoff, Frank Mullins Appointed To Board Of National Steeplechase Association

The National Steeplechase Association has filled the remaining two vacancies on its board of directors with a familiar name from the Maryland timber circuit and a top executive with one of the NSA's historic Southern meets.

The appointments of James Stierhoff and Frank Mullins, made by NSA President Al Griffin and his executive committee, restore the board to its full complement of 15 members, who are charged with overseeing the regulation of steeplechase racing in the U.S., and managing the business side of the Association. The duo was named to fill out the terms of two members who had resigned in 2022.

Stierhoff is a retired amateur jockey best known for his partnership with dual Maryland Hunt Cup winner Twill Do. A partner and portfolio manager at Brown Advisory, he co-chaired the Green Spring Point to Point Committee and served on the Board of the Maryland Steeplechase Association for many years. More recently, Stierhoff was named co-chairman of the committee that runs the Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs, a group of young professionals from the Maryland racing and business communities that was assembled to ensure the future of the meet by appealing to new fans and making the race-day experience better for existing ones.

A native of Augusta, Ga., Mullins graduated from college in 1984 and began working in commercial and residential real estate development. During his career he developed, capitalized, and managed projects for various clients, including federal agencies, hospitals, banks, and large private corporations. During this time, Mullins also partnered with his brother, Dr. Fred Mullins, on many business ventures within and outside the medical spectrum. Mullins also manages a family-owned private equity portfolio.

Horses are a significant part of Mullins' life, and last summer he succeeded Paul Sauerborn as president of the Aiken Steeplechase Association, which conducts racing at a brand new facility along Richland Avenue West. The venue, which is around double the size of the previous facility, had its debut in 2022, hosting a pair of well-attended meets, in the Spring and Fall, and once again will be the launching pad for the 2023 NSA Season on March 25.

Mullins, an Aiken resident, is also an NSA owner, longtime polo player, and a member of the U.S. Polo Association and Aiken Polo Club. Before becoming president of the Aiken Steeplechase Association, he was a board member.
