Runners From Five Countries Expected To Converge On Saudi Cup; Baffert Pair Headline US Contingent

The likely runners for the $35.35 million Saudi Cup meeting on Feb. 24-25 have been announced, with horses from 15 different racing nations set to compete over the two days.

King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh will host 16 races on its dirt and turf tracks, and the highlight of the meeting, the $20 million Group 1 Saudi Cup, looks set to be contested by runners from five different countries.

The field is headed by last year's winner Emblem Road (USA), who bids to become the first horse to win the Group 1 contest more than once. He will be ridden by Panamanian Alexis Moreno, and comes into the contest after an impressive victory when last seen.

The challenge from Japan looks stronger than ever with six likely contenders, including Dubai Turf winner Panthalassa (JPN) and Jun Light Bolt (JPN), the winner of the Group 1 Champions Cup. Other runners from Japan are Cafe Pharoah (JPN), Crown Pride (JPN), Geoglyph (JPN) and Vin De Garde (JPN).

Trainer Bob Baffert will be hoping his Country Grammer (USA) can go one better than last year, while he'll also saddle Taiba (USA), the dominant winner of the Group 1 Malibu Stakes when last seen.

Two-time British Group 1 winner Saffron Beach (IRE) represents the European challenge in the world's most valuable race, while in addition to Emblem Road, the local challenge features Custodian Of The Two Holy Mosques victor Scotland Yard (USA).

Many other top-class runners are set to take up their places in Riyadh, across a card which features a further six Group races.

In the $1.5 million Group 3 Neom Turf Cup presented by Altanfeethi, there's a strong European contingent set to line up with George Boughey's Missed The Cut (USA) and William Knight's Sir Busker (IRE) among those involved.

All eyes will be on Charlie Johnston's Subjectivist (GB) in the Group 3 Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap as he makes his long-awaited return to action, while Frankie Dettori will ride John & Thady Gosden's Ebor hero Trawlerman (IRE).

Japan's Dancing Prince (JPN) will attempt to defend his crown in the $1.5million Group 3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint presented by Sports Boulevard, alongside fellow Japanese raiders Remake (JPN), Ryuno Yukina (JPN) and Justin (JPN).

US trainers also hold a strong hand in the race, with William Mott's Breeders' Cup Sprint winner, Elite Power (USA) set to run while Steve Assmussen's Gunite (USA), is another interesting contender.

The Group 3 1351 Turf Sprint presented by stc also features a strong field, including last year's winner Songline (JPN) who will take on a stellar European challenge featuring Charlie Appleby's Creative Force (IRE) and Charlie Hills' Pogo (IRE).

Baffert's Havnameltdown (USA) is a main contender in the 1600m $1.5million Group 3 Saudi Derby presented by Boutique Group while Uruguayan-trained Es Unico (BRZ) will also take his chance. They face a strong local challenge from six Saudi-trained horses including Almulhelm (USA) trained by Abdullah Alfarraj, Almurtajiz (USA) trained by Ahmed Abdulwahad and Atta Alghali (USA) trained by Abdah Alathaab.

The Saudi Cup card also features the $2million Obaiya Arabian Classic for Purebred Arabians, which has been upgraded to Group 1 status after being run as a Group 2 last season.

There has been a strong entry with horses from France, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman joining locally trained runners. Tilal Al Khalediah (KSA), runner-up from 12 months ago and last year's third-placed horse RB Rich Lyke Me (USA) both feature while Samlla (FR) will pose a threat from France.

Friday 24 February sees 16 of the world's top international riders – seven female and seven male – compete in the International Jockeys Challenge.

Jockeys including Frankie Dettori, Joao Moreira, Luis Saez, Yuga Kawada and last year's winner Caitlin Jones will compete for a jockeys' prize fund of $100,000.

Jockey Marcelino Pedroza, Jr. Prepared For Return From Fractured Fibula

After suffering a hairline fracture to his fibula while loading into the gates on Jan. 19, Marcelino Pedroza, Jr. returned to Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Thursday morning, exercising a few horses and breezing the Patricia West-trained G's Million.

“Hopefully (we'll be riding for the same barns), it seems like we will,” Pedroza's agent John Herbstreit said. “It was a tiny fracture and there wasn't anything they could do about it but give it time to heal.”

The first-call rider for trainer Sam David Jr, and one of the go-to riders for the likes of Greg Foley, Brad Cox, Patricia West and Hugh Robertson, among others, Pedroza has finished in the top 10 of the Fair Grounds' jockey standings seven times since first joining the colony in 2013-14. Over that time span, the native of Panama has won 328 races locally. Pedroza has captured three leading rider crowns at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

“I'm hoping he's on a few next week,” Herbstreit said. “They draw entries today for next Thursday's card, so we're hoping he's back aboard on Thursday.”

Pedroza is named on one horse for Thursday, Feb. 16. Nancy Vanier and Lyda Williamson's Hat Tip trained by Brian Williamson is on the also-eligible list and would need two scratches to draw in that turf allowance.

Pedroza rode O Besos in the 2021 Kentucky Derby, finishing fifth for the Foley barn.

Lewis Winner Newgate Off Derby Trail With ‘Minor Hock Issue’

A determined winner of the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 4, Newgate has since been diagnosed with a “minor hock issue” that will require 60 to 90 days before the colt is able to resume training. Co-owner SF Racing's Tom Ryan announced the new on Twitter Friday, also sharing that Newgate's prognosis to return to racing is “excellent.”

Guided to victory by Frankie Dettori, Newgate won the Lewis by a neck over stablemate Hard to Figure. His final time for 1 1/16 miles on a track rated fast was recorded as 1:43.11.

Newgate, a son of Into Mischief who commanded $850,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling sale, has won two of his six career starts for earnings of $241,975. He was second by a neck in the G3 Sham Stakes on Jan. 9, and second in the G3 Bob Hope Stakes in the final start of his 2-year-old season.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Newgate was ineligible for Kentucky Derby points in the Lewis. Were it not for the suspension against Baffert by Churchill Downs, the win would have earned Newgate 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Derby Preps Headline Weekend Slate

A pair of 20-point GI Kentucky Derby preps headline Saturday's stakes action in the U.S.

Aqueduct's GIII Withers S.–pushed back a week due to cold weather–was helped slightly from a field size perspective by the delay and a group of seven are now set to line up. Gary and Mary West's Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}) invades from Oaklawn and will look to provide trainer Brad Cox with a first Withers trophy. A dominant debut winner going seven panels at Keeneland in October, he could only manage fourth as the favorite in a two-turn Churchill allowance Nov. 26, but the strength of that field has been demonstrated in the interim. Winner Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}) was third in January's GIII Lecomte S., while runner-up Rocket Can (Into Mischief) annexed last week's GIII Holy Bull S. Hit Show, meanwhile, took an Oaklawn allowance by daylight Dec. 17, good for a career-best 82 Beyer Speed Figure. His dam Actress (Tapit) was an 8 1/4-length winner of the track-and-trip GIII Comely S. in 2017. A trio of stakes-winning New York-breds also figure to have a say: Arctic Arrogance (Frosted), General Banker (Central Banker) and Andiamo a Firenze (Speightstown) were second, third and fifth, respectively, in the one-mile Jerome S. Jan. 7.

Meanwhile, down south, a full field of 12 will contest the GIII Sam F. Davis S. Danny Gargan trainee Dubyuhnell (Good Magic) makes his first start since a breakout tally in the nine-furlong GII Remsen S. in the Aqueduct slop Dec. 3. He earned a field-best 90 Beyer for that performance. 'TDN Rising Star' Champions Dream (Justify) was also a member of the Gargan barn when he scored in the Big A's GIII Nashua S. in November. Subsequently transferred to trainer Mark Casse by owner Rosedown Racing Stables, he was beaten a neck by re-opposing Zydeceaux (Cajun Breeze) in the local seven-furlong Pasco S. Jan. 14. Trainer Todd Pletcher owns a record six Davis wins, but is looking to end a drought since 2016. He sends out Litigate (Blame), a well-beaten second last time in a Gulfstream allowance behind Holy Bull beaten favorite Cyclone Mischief (Into Mischief).

Saturday's Tampa card also marks the return of champion juvenile filly Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief), who takes on GII Demoiselle S. winner and 'Rising Star' Julia Shining (Curlin) in the Suncoast S.

A third Derby qualifier, the 10-point El Camino Real Derby, takes place Saturday at Golden Gate. Bob Baffert and The Avengers send a pair northward to square off with unbeaten local speedster Harcyn (Goldencents).
