Twirling Candy’s Ag Bullet Holds On For Lady Of Shamrock Win

After an unsuccessful fifth behind GISW & 'TDN Rising Star' Faiza (Girvin) on the dirt at Del Mar in November, Ag Bullet made the switch to the grass and immediately found success, posting a 3 1/2-length win Jan. 22 going 6 1/2 furlongs. Stretched out to one mile for the first time in Sunday's Lady of Shamrock S. at Santa Anita, the gray broke as the narrow 2-1 second choice behind eventual runner-up The Wild Grazer and showed good early speed to contest the tempo up front. Jockey Frankie Dettori, riding in place of an injured Joe Bravo, took Ag Bullet in hand to tuck back in second off early pacesetter Broadway Girls (Army Mule). Chasing while two wide around the far turn, she hit the front with a furlong to run and held off a closing The Wild Grazer to secure the narrow win.

Noble Grey has a 2-year-old colt, Innocent Man (Honor Code), and a yearling filly by Classic Empire. She is carrying a Mendelssohn foal for 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

They Call Him ‘El Bomba’: Chilean Jockey Hernandez Registers First U.S. Win Sunday At Laurel

MCA Racing Stable's 4-year-old filly Queen Cadence swept to the lead around the far turn and opened up through the stretch to win Laurel Park's Sunday opener and give jockey Jorge F. Hernandez his first win in the United States.

Queen Cadence ($6), the 2-1 favorite trained by Claudio Gonzalez, went 5½ furlongs in 1:07.30 over a fast main track to win the claiming event for older fillies and mares by 3½ lengths.

A multiple group-stakes winning jockey in his native Chile, the 33-year-old Hernandez's first domestic win came in his 27th mount. He also finished fourth on Shoulda Had It for owner-trainer Mario Serey Jr. in Race 2.

“I am really happy. I was waiting for it. After having five seconds in a month I wanted to get that first win out of the way,” Hernandez said through fellow jockey Angel Cruz. “It's special.”

Hernandez settled Queen Cadence in fourth, giving her clear run three wide, down the backstretch as Sapphire Beauty led the way through a quarter-mile in :23.25. Queen Cadence cruised up to the leader exiting the far turn and rolled past once straightened for home to earn her second career win.

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both also named Jorge, Hernandez began riding at the age of 16 prior to entering the Blanco Encalada Riders School. Standing just 4-foot-7, Hernandez quickly rose to become one of Chile's top riders and earned the nickname 'El Bomba.' He said he won 960 races in his home country, including Group 1, 2 and 3 stakes.

“My career was awesome over there, but I wanted to try something different in the United States,” Hernandez said.

Brought to Laurel by Gonzalez, Maryland's overall leading trainer six straight years who also hails from Chile, Hernandez had five seconds and one third from his first 26 mounts. He made his North American debut Jan. 6, finishing fifth on Gonzalez-trained God is Love. Seventeen of Hernandez's mounts have come for Gonzalez.

“Claudio brought me from Chile,” Hernandez said. “I want to thank Claudio and all the other trainers that have given me the opportunity since I've been here. I'm so happy for the opportunity Claudio gave me. He opened the door for me to come here.”

Hernandez has also ridden three times at Penn National. He is named in two of eight races on the next live program at Laurel Friday, Feb. 17.

2023 Mating Plans, Presented by Spendthrift: JCB Stables

As we approach the opening of the 2023 breeding season, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why. Today we caught up with JCB Stables' Ezequiel Cesar Valle, who represents the aforementioned American branch of Haras Firmamento, one of the largest farms in Argentina.

MAID OF HONOR (6, Medaglia d´Oro–Lovely Regina, by Deputy Minister), to be bred to Street Sense
We bought five mares at the last Keeneland November Sale, and she was the most expensive at $260,000 carrying her first foal by Twirling Candy. She was originally a $400,000 yearling.

Maid of Honor is a half-sister to MGSW Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa) and her second dam, Cara Rafaela, literally fills the page. We are sending her to Street Sense because he is one of the best stallions in America; a top sire and sire of sires who will suite her physically, too.

BELLA AURELIA (6, Medaglia d´Oro–My Miss Aurelia, by Smart Strike) to be bred to Hard Spun
Another purchase from Keeneland November. You do not have to explain too much about her; she is the first registered foal out of champion 2-year-old filly My Miss Aurelia. She has a colt by Munnings and now is in foal to Maclean´s Music.

Hard Spun is the real deal. There are not too many proven stallions like him with 15 career Grade I-winners.

BY THE HOUR (5, Tapit–Miss Super Quick, by Rock Hard Ten) to be bred to Twirling Candy
Another Keeneland November purchase, this one carrying her first foal by American Pharoah. We love her pedigree, she is from the immediate family of GI Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, and many other Grade I stakes winners.

Twirling Candy, one of the best sons of Candy Ride (Arg) at stud, suites her perfectly. Candy Ride numbers with Tapit mares are incredible and he has already shown a remarkable affinity for the A.P. Indy branch

CLEOPATRA'S CHARM (6, Pioneerof The Nile–Careless Jewel, by Tapit), to be bred to Hard Spun
Our first purchase. We bought her at Keeneland November in 2021 in foal to Omaha Beach and we have a very nice and strong colt. Her first foal is a Bernardini filly that we acquired at the last Keeneland September sale for $155,000. She is currently in foal to Blame and I like Hard Spun for her this year because the Hard Spun/Empire Maker cross is proven (Silver State, for example).

Cleopatra's Charm's dam is a Grade I stakes winner and she is a 3/4-sister to Reframe, a very famous filly in Japan who won a Listed race.

BRASSY (6, Medaglia d´Oro-Cheeky Charm, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Nyquist
Brassy has a lovely pedigree. Her dam is 3/4-sister to Sky Mesa and Velvety, the dam of Maxfield. Her third dam is the influential mare La Affirmed, ancestress of Bernstein, for example. She was our last purchase at Keeneland November, in foal to Hard Spun.

Brassy is booked to Nyquist, one of the best young sires in America and who also crosses well over mares from the Medaglia d´Oro and A.P. Indy lines.

STREET SLAYER (4, Street Sense–Ghostslayer, by Ghostzapper), to be bred to Twirling Candy
Street Slayer is a half-sister to GSW Biddy Duke (Bayern) and descends from the same family as Forte, Folklore, Contrail, and Essential Quality, among other Grade I-winners.

We bought her as a broodmare prospect at Keeneland November and she is now booked to Twirling Candy, too. Twirling Candy is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare and has found success with mares from that line. And as I mentioned before, there are not too many active, proven stallions in Kentucky as good as him for $60,000.

KNOCKOUT KISSES (4, Into MIschief–Transplendid by Elusive Quality), to be bred to Blame
We acquired Knockout Kisses as a broodmare prospect at the Fasig-Tipton July sale last year. She is a young half-sister to GSW Dennis' Moment (Tiznow). She has a lot of Into Mischief and we chose Blame because it's a great physical match as well. We really like Blame, he is a proven stallion and he offers good value even at the increased fee of $25,000.

‘He’s Just An Uncomplicated Guy That Works Hard’: Pereira Making The Most Of Opportunities At Santa Anita

Jockey Tiago Pereira expected to be riding at Oaklawn Park this winter, same as a year ago. That was the plan anyway until his 6-year-old daughter, Valentina, offered her own thoughts on the matter.

“She was so mad,” said Pereira, a 46-year-old native of Brazil. “She was crying and told me, 'Dad, don't go to Oaklawn.' My daughter is the most important thing in my life. So I said 'OK, I won't go for you.' I'm glad she spoke up.”

Equally glad Pereira didn't leave for Hot Spring, Ark. are Santa Anita horsemen and bettors.

Despite having only limited opportunities at Santa Anita's Classic Meet so far, Pereira entered Sunday's action ranked fourth in the jockey's standings thanks to a robust 31 percent win rate (11-for-35). Last year at Oaklawn Park, which race exclusively on dirt, Pereira finished 19th in the jockey's race while winning at a 13 percent clip.

“It is much better, this meet has been good to me,” Pereira said. “Not too many opportunities, but good horses. Hopefully I can keep it going.”

Prior to his foray to Oaklawn Park last year, Pereira had spent the winters at Santa Anita following his arrival from Brazil in 2014.

In his native country, Pereira was a standout rider who parlayed his success there into a victory in the 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1), a $10-million race, aboard Brazilian-bred Gloria de Campeao for trainer Pascal Bary. In 2021, Pereira won his first and only U.S. Grade 1 aboard Tripoli for John Sadler in the Pacific Classic.

Agent Derek Lawson has represented Pereira since last summer. He noted Pereira's recent run of success has him “confident that he can compete here.

“We always knew he could. I mean, this is a guy that won a $10-million race and a $1-million Pacific Classic,” Lawson added. “Obviously you have to have some talent to be able to do that.”

Trainer Steve Knapp has been on a tear of his own at the Classic Meet. He has been among Pereira's biggest supporters. Of the jockey's 11 wins at the meet, six have been for Knapp.

“Every time I put him on a horse he gives me 100 percent effort and that's what I'm looking for,” Knapp said. “Somebody that will try for fourth, third, or second if you're not going to win. That does mean something to owners when they get a piece of it.”

As for Pereira, he's hoping the fast start will lead to more business as the Classic Meet progresses.

“I don't ride too many, but the stables I do ride for have given me good horses with good chances. I just try my best and the horses have been responding,” Pereira said. “Hopefully, if I keep going good, it will open more doors for me.”

Lawson sees him as being well on his way.

“He's never really been in this position where he's winning races in bunches. It's great to see,” Lawson said. “But the most important thing is he's just an uncomplicated guy that works hard. He trusts what you're doing.”
