Canterbury Park Releases First Condition Book For 2023 Meet

Canterbury Park racing officials have released the first condition book for the 54-day race meet that begins Saturday, May 27. Daily average purse distribution is expected to be $220,000. The initial book covers the first 11 days of racing through June 18 with turf and dirt races offered each day.

“We are happy to be offering a wide range of conditions for our trainers and owners on both dirt and turf,” Sr. Director of Racing Operations Chris Merz said. “Over the last few seasons, we have seen a rise in the number of turf races used. We plan on building upon that this meet.”

In 2022, Canterbury averaged 2.9 turf races per day. The seven-furlong inner grass course can accommodate multiple distances from five furlongs to 1 1/16th miles using the turf chute. Eight stakes will be contested on the turf this season including five on Wednesday, June 21, the Northern Stars Turf Festival.

Maiden special weight purses for open company are set at $27,000. The condition book along with stall applications can be found at canterburypark.com/horsemen/ . Earlier this month officials at the Shakopee, Minn. racetrack announced a starter incentive bonus that will pay the owner of each starter $700 per start through the first eight days of racing as well as a shipping loan program and guaranteed minimum purse payments for the entire meet.

Merz and Racing Operations Manager Amber Carlisle have begun an aggressive recruiting tour that will take them to tracks in Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Illinois. Racing Secretary Rob Junk holds a similar position at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, a source of many horses that summer at Canterbury.

“I am looking forward to visiting with trainers to explain the array of options available to them at the meet,” Merz said. “Canterbury Park is gearing up to be the hot spot of the summer.”

Questions about the upcoming meet can be emailed to acarlisle@canterburypark.com . The season concludes Sept. 16.

Hit Show's dominant win in the Grade 3 Wither Stakes elevated the son of Candy Ride into the top ten of this week's NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden to victory by Manny Franco, Hit Show got nine furlongs over the Aqueduct dirt in 1:54.71 to be voted into seventh position.

Newgate, fifth in last week's poll, dropped out of the top ten after it was announced that the colt had been injured and was off the Derby trail.

The Top 3-Year-Old poll of 2023 continues to be led by Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Forte, a son of Violence trained by Todd Pletcher. The colt has not yet started this year, but is expected to target the Florida Road to the Kentucky Derby.

In second position is remains G3 Southwest winner Arabian Knight (Baffert), while G3 Lecomte winner Instant Coffee sits in third (Brad Cox).

The 3-Year-Old poll represents horses competing up and through the Triple Crown.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Jet Dark (SAf) (Trippi–Night Jet (SAf), by Jet Master (SAf)) has been retired and will take up stallion duties at Drakenstein Stud where he was foaled and raised, owners Nick Jonsson and Tommy Crowe announced. Drakenstein's Gaynor Rupert is now part-owner of the bay.

The R200,000 BSA April yearling won Grade 1s at ages two, three, four and five and was named 2020/21 Equus Champion 3-year-old Colt, 2020/21 and 2021/22 Equus Champion Miler, 2021/22 Equus Champion Older Male and 2021/22 Equus Champion Middle Distance Horse. He heads to the breeding shed with a record of 19-9-3-2, R5,697,850 and a final victory in the G1 WSB Cape Met over 10 furlongs on Jan. 28.

“Jet Dark was an incredibly easy horse to train,” trainer Justin Snaith said. “He was a gentleman with the most kind temperament which allowed me to get the best of him while retiring him completely sound. I will be sad to see him go as I believe he

had a few Group 1s left in the tank. I cannot wait to buy his yearlings.”

A half-brother to Grade 3-placed Night Ruler (SAf) (Kingsbarns {Ire}), Jet Dark will stand for a fee of R30,000 for his first season. G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and sire Peintre Celebre is under the fourth dam.

“The pace of societal change we are experiencing today demands the industry thinks creatively and boldly to safeguard the sport for tomorrow.

“I know this year's topic, 'Modernising racing: How far and how fast?' will offer important insight and generate engaging debate at the conference. I look forward to the contributions from keynotes speakers, industry leaders and the conference delegates.”
