Wet Paint Earns 20 Kentucky Oaks Points With Last To First Martha Washington Score

Brad Cox-trained Wet Paint found a wet fast track to her liking at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark., on Saturday, rallying from last under Flavien Prat to win the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes going away by two lengths. A homebred for Godolphin, the 3-year-old filly by Blame out of Sky Painter, by Street Cry, earned 20 qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks after covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.62. She paid $8 as the third choice in the wagering in a field of six.

Taxed finished second under Joe Talamo, with Defining Purpose and David Cabrera three-quarters of a length back in third. Take Charge Briana, Olivia Twist and Key to Success rounded out the field. Kentucky Oaks points were distributed on a 20-8-6-4-2 basis to the top five.

Breaking from the inside post position, Wet Paint showed no speed coming out of the gate and trailed the field early as even-money favorite Defining Purpose – coming off a 5 1/4-length victory at Oaklawn in the Year's End Stakes – battled with second choice Olivia Twist for the lead, going the opening quarter mile in :23.96 and the half in :48.18.

Olivia Twist, who entered the Martha Washington  unbeaten in three Remington Park starts for trainer Todd Fincher, led going into the far turn, the six furlongs clocked in 1:13.28. Rounding the turn and into the stretch, Olivia Twist was engaged by Defining Purpose again, with longshot Taxed making a three-wide move alongside the two leaders.

Prat, meanwhile, stayed on the rail aboard Wet Paint, moving up on the leaders turning into the stretch and then swinging to the outside. She powered to the lead inside the furlong pole with right and left-handed encouragement from Prat and won comfortably.

“Brad (trainer Cox) was telling me she wasn't really quick out of there,” Prat said. “He said to give her time to get herself on her leads. After that, she was traveling well. I was able to cut the corner. And, when I tipped her out, she really responded well.”

The Martha Washington was Wet Paint's second win in four starts, her only previous victory coming in a maiden contest contested on a sloppy track at Horseshoe Indianapolis in October, making a similar last-to-first move. Her most recent start resulted in a second-place finish on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Turfway Park Dec. 14.

‘I’m Ready To Be Home For A While’: After Whirlwind Two Weeks, Flightline’s Trainer Back At Santa Anita Base

When you train a horse like undefeated superstar Flightline, you can have the experiences John Sadler has enjoyed the past two weeks.

First, it was a five-day trip to London last week where Sadler accepted Flightline's award as the Longines World's Best Racehorse from the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. Then this week, Sadler went on a four-day sojourn to South Florida where on Thursday he accepted Flightline's Eclipse Awards for 2022 Horse of the Year and champion older dirt male.

On Saturday morning, the 66-year-old conditioner was back trackside at Santa Anita and “ready to be home for a while.

“It was great. We had two great trips,” Sadler noted. “The setting for the Eclipse Awards was beautiful, The Breakers hotel (in Palm Beach). It was like a resort right on the beach. Two great trips back-to-back, so I'm ready to be home for a while.”

In London, Flightline not only was officially crowned the world's best racehorse of 2022, but he received an official rating of 140 by a panel of international handicappers in what was a surprise move. That put him equal with the great European superstar Frankel, who was a perfect 14-for-14 on turf from 2010 through 2012. Additionally, Flightline's rating was the highest for a North American-trained horse since Cigar earned a 135 in 1996.
Flightline had originally received a rating of 139 for his 19 ¼-length demolition in last summer's Grade 1 Pacific Classic, but the international panel upgraded it by a pound during a meeting in December.

Sadler was joined in London by members of Flightline's ownership group including Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds, Bill Farish of Woodford Racing, Stephanie Hronis of Hronis Racing and breeder Jane Lyon of Summer Wind Farm in Georgetown, Ky.

Sadler noted the experience was like none he had experienced before in London.

“I'd been through London, but never spent that much time there,” Sadler said. “We got to see a lot of the city. I did more than I've ever done.”

At the Eclipse Awards, Flightline won champion older dirt male after receiving 240 of a possible 246 first-place votes, which included two abstentions.

For Horse of the Year, Flightline tallied 239 votes for Horse of the Year.

“It was good and better,” Sadler said of his two-week experience. “It was all just so nice.”

Flightline's international coronation comes following a career where he was a perfect 6-for-6 in two seasons of racing with those victories coming by a combined 71 lengths. In last year's Horse of the Year campaign, Flightline won the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, Pacific Classic and Breeders' Cup Classic by 8 ¼ lengths. The now 5-year-old son of Tapit out of Feathered, by Indian Charlie, was retired following the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). He will stand the upcoming breeding season at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky. for an advertised fee of $200,000.

Throughout the two weeks, Sadler said there was one experience that stood out from the rest.

“It was all so great, but I guess my favorite moment was at the Eclipse Awards when they went to Horse of the Year,” Sadler reflected. “The (presenter) said, 'I'm not even going to open the envelope.' He goes, '3, 2, 1' and everyone in the room yells 'Flightline!' That was a great moment.”

‘Today She Was Very Relaxed’: Personal Best Wins La Prevoyante In Graded Stakes Debut

Patiently ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Personal Best glided to the lead in late stretch and won $150,000 La Prevoyante (G3) by a neck over Transient Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The La Prevoyante was the first of seven graded stakes on the 13-race blockbuster Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) card that includes the $1-million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1)and the $500,000 TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf Invitational (G3).

Personal Best, bred and owned by Joseph Allen and trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, prevailed in her first try in a graded stakes. Ortiz kept the4-year-old gray daughter of Tapit  off the pace set by Adventuring, the even-money favorite. Following Transient, Ortiz moved her into contention on the outside in the last of the three turns in the 1 ½-miles race for older fillies and mares. Transient collared Adventuring as they approached the midstretch and Personal Best rolled to the lead a few strides later.

The 6-5 second choice in the wagering, Personal Best paid $4.60 for her third victory in a nine-race career. The final time was 2:26.04 over a firm course.

Godolphin's Adventuring went off as the 3-2 favorite in the field of seven and finished third. She set a sharp fraction of :23.48  for the first quarter and followed with times of :48.19 for a half mile and 1:13.57 for six furlongs.

Personal Best, who came into Saturday's race off a third in her stakes debut in the Tropical Park Oaks Dec. 26 at Gulfstream, was bred in Kentucky from the War Front mare War Flag and improved to 3-2-3 from nine starts. The $91,140 winner's share of the La Prevoyante boosted her lifetime bankroll to $294,860.

La Prevoyante (G3) Stakes Quotes

Winning trainer Shug McGaughey (Personal Best): “I thought Irad rode her perfectly. There was a little speed in front of her and she was tracking really good. He said at the three-eighths pole, he was loaded. She has a little bit of a tendency to hang, but he just didn't let her do that today.

“She's still kind of lightly raced and has some things to learn. In few of her races, she wanted to be in her bridle too much, not bad. Today she was very relaxed. I think as we go along, I think we should have some fun with her.”

Winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. (Personal Best): “Another great start, and the mare was much more relaxed today; that was key to the perfect trip we had, and by the three-eighths pole she was full of run and I let her go.

“I think the track is playing fair; it all depends on how fast or how slow the pace is.”

Quality Road Sires Exacta In Listed King’s Cup, Saudi Cup Next

A little less than five months after Emblem Road caused a massive upset in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup last February, agents for that horse's owner HRH Prince Saud bin Salman Abdulaziz went shopping for another son of Quality Road at the Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale. They landed on Scotland Yard, placed three times in maiden company from four starts for WinStar Farm and Siena Farm and Steve Asmussen and offered through the WinStar Racing consignment.

Acquired for $255,000 with a race like the Saudi Cup the long-term objective, Scotland Yard remained undefeated in three starts at King Abdulaziz Racetrack with a comprehensive victory in Saturday's $399,600 Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (King's Cup), accorded listed black-type status for the first time.

Drawn wide in a field of 17, Scotland Yard broke alertly and raced handy to the pace while traveling in about the six path down the long backstretch in Riyadh. Allowed to improve his position and guided down to race three deep around the turn, Scotland Yard wrested command from fellow Fasig-Tipton HORA grad Electability (Quality Road) under little encouragement with more than a quarter-mile to race and put on a show down the lane, scoring by 10 1/4 lengths (see below, SC 16)). Electability plugged on for second ahead of 9-year-old mare La Casa Tarifa (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) in third. The final time for the mile and a quarter on a dry strip that rarely produces fast times was a crisp 2:04 flat. With the victory, Scotland Yard earns an automatic berth in the nine-furlong Saudi Cup Feb. 25.

Scotland Yard is a son of Leslie's Harmony (Curlin), a half-sister to four-time champion and 10-time Grade I winner Beholder (Henny Hughes), all-conquering sire Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) and GISW and promising young stallion Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy). Bridlewood Farm acquired Leslie's Harmony for $1.1 million out of the 2014 Keeneland September Sale and she is also the dam of the 3-year-old filly Union Harmony (Union Rags), a 2-year-old Tapit filly and a yearling filly by Uncle Mo. She is due to Not This Time for her 2023 foal. Scotland Road is the 67th stakes winner for his sire.
