After winning for the first time in late November, Bob Baffert trainee Reincarnate powered into 2023 with renewed energy to win by a neck at 16-1 odds in the Jan. 8 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Jockey Rios Injured, Filly Euthanized In Three-Horse Incident At Gulfstream
Jockeys Luis Saez and Javier Castellano escaped injuries during a three-horse incident during Race 8 at Gulfstream Park on Sunday while jockey Jesus Rios was taken to Aventura Hospital due to shoulder pain.
Castellano's and Rios' mounts escaped apparently unharmed, but Bo Derek, the 3-2 race favorite, had to be euthanized.
Bo Derek, with Saez aboard, raced in second behind pacesetter Love Rhapsody through the first half mile of the 7 1/2-furong maiden special weight for 3-year-olds fillies on the turf.
Roused by Saez from the three path entering the stretch, Bo Derek “went wrong”, according to the Equibase chart, and fell just before the eighth pole.
Castellano was unseated when his mount, Her Ladyship, tried to avoid the fallen filly. Rios' mount, Poshly, tripped and unseated him while also trying to avoid Bo Derek. Poshly got up and walked off the track, as did Her Ladyship, but Bo Derek was vanned off.
By Speightstown out of Wildwood Rose, by Galileo, Bo Derek was owned by WinStar Farm and Siena Farm and trained by Todd Pletcher. She was making her second lifetime start after finishing fourth in her career opener for trainer Rodolphe Brisset Oct. 30 at Churchill Downs. The $900,000 Keeneland September yearling was bred in Kentucky by John Gunther and Tanya Gunther.

‘This Is A Real Racehorse’: Cyclone Mischief Sweeps To Victory At Gulfstream In Holy Bull Prep
Albaugh Family Stables LLC's Cyclone Mischief swept to a 5 ¾-length victory in Sunday's Race 9 feature at Gulfstream Park, where the Dale Romans-trained son of Into Mischief 'probably' will return in the $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) Feb. 4.
Sunday's one-turn mile optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds served as a prep for the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull on the road to the $1-million Curlin Florida Derby (G1).
“This is a real racehorse. He's the real deal,” Romans said. “He's one of the best I've had in a long time.”
The Kentucky-bred colt was ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, who picked up the mount when named rider, Luis Saez, took off his last two mounts after being involved in a spill in Race 8.
Cyclone Mischief rated behind pacesetter Rudder's Men, who set fractions of :23.28 and :45.81 seconds for the first half mile with Mr. Ripple in close pursuit. On the turn into the homestretch, Gaffalione sent his mount between horses as the pacesetters tired, and the Romans trainee kicked powerfully through the stretch to score an impressive victory.
“I feel terrible. Thankfully, Luis is OK, but we were just in the right spot. Very tremendous colt. Big, powerful individual,” Gaffalione said. “He broke alertly, put himself in a great spot. Kind, he listens to you and, man, he's got some turn of foot.
“They told me that they had been working him behind horses and he seemed to be really thriving with that, so that was kind of the plan,” added Gaffalione after closing within five wins of the 2000-win milestone.
Litigate, who loomed boldly on the far outside entering the stretch finished second, just a nose ahead of a re-rallying Mr. Ripple. Cyclone Mischief ran a mile in 1:36.48.
“It was a perfect trip. We wanted to see if he would sit behind and he did,” Romans said.

Good Magic’s Reincarnate Holds Off Newgate To Win Sham
Topping a Bob Baffert trifecta, REINCARNATE (Good Magic), the co-longest shot on the board at 16-1, held off Newgate (Into Mischief) and favored National Treasure (Quality Road) to steal the GIII Sham S.
Fresh off his maiden-breaking score in just his second start on the dirt following a pair of turf efforts in the fall, Reincarnate, a $775,000 yearling, came in the least heralded of Baffert's trio. Sent right to the front from his middle gate, the roan colt was able to clear National Treasure on his inside for a rail-hugging trip with Spun Intended just to his outside. That duo paced the field through an opening quarter in 22.78 as Packs a Wahlop and National Treasure raced in tandem behind while Newgate brought up the rear.
The field began to bunch up as they approached the far turn and Reincarnate got a bit of breathing room on the front end past the quarter pole. Newgate, who swept by the field on the outside to challenge at the top of the stretch, kept it tight but Reincarnate was game, countering every attack with one of his own and getting the better of his rival close to the wire to win by a neck. National Treasure chased the top pair home and finished three-quarters of a length back in third.
While the top three finishers would normally have been awarded points on a 10-5-3-2-1-scale on the road to the Kentucky Derby, only Packs a Wahlop (Creative Cause) and Spun Intended (Hard Spun) were eligible due to Baffert's ongoing suspension.
“It looks like this horse is getting better with every race, the first couple of starts, he was a little green,” said Juan Hernandez. “Today, he broke really sharp and actually he surprised me. I had come up with a plan to stay behind the speed, make him relax and make one move, but when the gate opened, plans changed.”
“He's the kind of horse that can run all day long,” said Bob Baffert. “He broke great and Juan just kind of let him run away from there. They were all on their own, I didn't give anybody any instructions. I was watching Johnny (Velazquez, aboard National Treasure) and he was in tight the whole way…I think (Reincarnate) showed that distance is not going to be a problem for him once he (gets) the lead. I was surprised he that easy lead and he just kept going.”
Pedigree Note:
The most recent winner for his dam, herself a stakes winner and a half-sister to MGSP Over Emphasize (Overanalyze), Reincarnate has a 2-year-old half-brother by Goldencents and a yearling half-brother by Liam's Map. Allanah went to More than Ready for 2023. By way of the third dam, this is also the female family of Canadian MSW Winning Agenda (Twilight Agenda), who went on to produce two-time champion Peruvian grass horse Zeide Isaac (Freud). That one's half-siblings include SW Dixie Two Star (Dixie Brass) and SP Canta Ke Brave (River Special).
