The Great British Bonus Reaches £9-Million Mark

The Great British Bonus (GBB) scheme has now paid out over £9 million in bonuses after the Fergal O'Brien-trained Hidden Beauty (GB) (Kapgarde {Fr}) won the Betting Better with Sky Bets Novices' Hurdle on Tuesday. The Peel Bloodstock-bred picked up £5,000 for her victory instead of £10,000 because her sire is based in France at Haras de la Hetraie.

Peel Bloodstock's Will Kinsey said, “We're delighted to be a part of GBB. We've had a number of winners now and it makes breeding a winner that little bit more special. It's great to be able to offer our clients fillies and mares who are registered to the scheme. It means–particularly if they win a fillies-only race–a chance to see returns on their investment. Previously, these fillies would have been overlooked but now buyers are seeking them out.”

More than 650 individual bonuses to 503 fillies and mares have been awarded since the scheme's inception in June of 2020. Of that number, 112, including Hidden Beauty, have won more than one bonus, which rewards the breeding, buying, and racing of British-bred fillies.

Charlie Newton of GBB said, “These milestone announcements have come thick and fast in the past 12 months, but every one is exciting–it's certainly a super way to start the year. We always knew that GBB could be something fantastic–and it's great to see the industry has taken hold of the scheme and really run with it. The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) is the majority funder for the scheme, so we're grateful to them for backing us from the start.”

Top Ten Strategy in Texas Hold’em

This is, by far, one of the most important concepts in Texas Holdem. Playing a top ten strategy is the very first strategy that players should learn because it teaches the player good habits that lead will lead to later success.

People are always asking me what a good, solid strategy is for a beginner playing Texas Hold’em. My answer is always the same, play a top ten strategy.

Top Ten strategy, refers to the the top ten pockets hands that you can have. These hands are AA, KK, QQ, AK suited, JJ, TT, 99, 88, AQ suited, and 77. The strategy suggests that you only play these hands. This will lead to very conservative play, but for a beginner to texas holdem, conservatively is exactly how you want to play.

It seems to me that I am always seeing newbies playing very agressively, they are the first ones to go all in, and that is generally the wrong strategy. If these beginner players would stick to a top ten poker strategy, they would come out much better in the long run. More importantly, this conservative top ten poker strategy will teach the beginning player patience, which is the most important virtue that a texas holdem player can possess.

Hot Rod Charlie Retired To Stand In Japan

Hot Rod Charlie, a Grade 1 winner and earner of over $5.6 million on the racetrack, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Shadai Farm in Japan for the 2023 breeding season, Daily Racing Form reports.

The 5-year-old son of Oxbow's retirement was confirmed to DRF by co-owner Bill Strauss, who said the horse will leave for Japan after clearing quarantine requirements. He had been residing at Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., since finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Nov. 5.

Hot Rod Charlie retires with five wins in 19 starts for earnings of $5,676,720, racing for trainer Doug O'Neill, and the partnership of Roadrunner Racing, Boat Racing, Gainesway Stable and Strauss Bros. Racing.

After finishing second in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at odds of 94-1, Hot Rod Charlie earned a place in the following year's Kentucky Derby field with a victory in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. He finished third at Churchill Downs, then was promoted to second following the eventual disqualification of Medina Spirit.

Hot Rod Charlie continued to compete at a high level during his 3-year-old season, finishing second in the Belmont Stakes, then coming back two starts later to take the G1 Pennsylvania Derby. He'd then finish fourth in that year's Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar and second in the G2 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

At five, Hot Rod Charlie ventured overseas to the U.A.E., where he won the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2, then finished second in the G1 Dubai World Cup. His stateside return was highlighted by a hard-fought score in the G2 Lukas Classic against Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike.

Bred in Kentucky by Edward A. Cox, Jr., Hot Rod Charlie is out of the placed Indian Charlie mare Indian Miss, who was named 2021 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. Hot Rod Charlie is a half-brother to champion sprinter Mitole.
