On Sunday, Jan. 15, Eclipse Award finalist Leave No Trace had her first breeze since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last fall. The 3-year-old daughter of Outwork covered three furlongs in 39.32 seconds at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., marking the first step toward a campaign for the 2023 Kentucky Oaks.
Trained by Phil Serpe, Leave No Trace won Saratoga's Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes before finishing third in the G1 Frizette, then finished her season with a second-place finish in the Breeders' Cup after breaking from the 12-post.
“Her 2-year-old year was really exciting, sensational, whatever you want to call it,” Serpe told the Daily Racing Form. “She really didn't have a throwout race in her four starts, although looking back I consider the Frizette a throwout because I probably ran her back a bit too quick and she really seemed to dislike the track at Aqueduct. I thought her Breeders' Cup race was really good considering it was a very difficult decision how we were going to handle the outside post. I thought she ran a terrific race, all things considered.”
Serpe gave the filly a six-week break of just hand-walking after the Breeders' Cup, and has started her back to training with an eye on the G2 Davona Dale on March 4 at Gulfstream for her sophomore debut. The next step would likely be the Gulfstream Oaks on April 1, giving Leave No Trace two starts in Florida before the Run for the Lillies.
