Berry Banned Until 2024 For Accepting Considerations

Sydney-based jockey Tommy Berry has been disqualified and is set to be out of the saddle for more than a year after being found guilty for “accepting a consideration” from a local punter in exchange for advice, Racing.com reported on Tuesday. The 31-year-old rider received the verdict and his punishment in a hearing before the NSW stewards on Tuesday and already has filed his intentions to appeal and apply for a stay of the suspension.

Berry was handed a total disqualification of 11 months and two weeks for “accepting or agreeing to accept considerations” from Gold Coast butcher and active punter Zaid Miller. Barry is believed to have accepted $15,000 through a deposit from Miller to a family member's bank account after he won more than $100,000 based on information he received from the rider. In Australia it is illegal for jockeys to accept considerations from anyone other than a horse's owner without permission from stewards.

Berry also received an additional four-week suspension for having a mobile phone in the jockeys' room, which is forbidden during race meetings.

Berry's disqualification was set to begin immediately and run through Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023, before the extra four-week suspension starts, making him ineligible to ride until Monday, Jan. 29, 2024.

Australian media reported the considerations related to bets placed by Miller on horses Waterford (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) at Warwick Farm on Mar. 23, and Character (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Promise Of Success (GB) (Dansili {GB}) at Newcastle on Mar. 28. Berry rode both Waterford and Character.

Overall Berry faced six charges and was found guilty on all counts.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 is set for its three-day stand Friday-Sunday where fans will have the third of six early opportunities to bet the contenders pointed toward the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1).

Pool 3 is led by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Forte, who was made the 10-1 individual betting favorite while the pari-mutuel field of “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” not listed within the 38 individual betting interests was tabbed as the heavy 6-5 choice.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will open Friday at noon (all times Eastern) and close Sunday at 6 p.m. Fans can wager on www.TwinSpires.com along with participating simulcast and ADW outlets from around the country.

Forte, who jumped onto the early Road to the Kentucky Derby with a victory in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) in October, closed as the 10-1 individual favorite in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which spanned Nov. 24-27. The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Violence also took heavy interest in Pool 1 where he closed at 16-1. Forte was given time off following the Breeders' Cup and has yet to make his 3-year-old debut.

Trainer Brad Cox has a roster of 11 3-year-olds in Pool 3 led by the returning Breeders' Futurity (G1) runner-up Loggins (20-1) and undefeated Corona Bolt (20-1). The others are Victory Formation (30-1), Giant Mischief (40-1), Instant Coffee (40-1), Jace's Road (40-1), Verifying (40-1), Tapit Shoes (50-1), Angel of Empire (80-1), Hit Show (80-1) and Tapit's Conquest (99-1).

Here is the Pool 3 field for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (with trainer and morning line odds provided by Mike Battaglia): #1 Angel of Empire (Cox, 80-1); #2 Arctic Arrogance (Linda Rice, 50-1); #3 Banishing (Brendan Walsh, 40-1); #4 Blazing Sevens (Chad Brown, 40-1); #5 Confidence Game (Keith Desormeaux, 99-1); #6 Corona Bolt (Cox, 20-1); #7 Curly Jack (Tom Amoss, 80-1); #8 Cyclone Mischief (Dale Romans, 40-1); #9 Disarm (Steve Asmussen, 80-1); #10 Dubyuhnell (Danny Gargan, 30-1); #11 Echo Again (Asmussen, 80-1); #12 Extra Anejo (Asmussen, 20-1); #13 Forte (Pletcher, 10-1); #14 Giant Mischief (Cox, 40-1); #15 Gulfport (Asmussen, 80-1); #16 Gun Pilot (Asmussen, 80-1); #17 Hit Show (Cox, 80-1); #18 Instant Coffee (Cox, 40-1); #19 Jace's Road (Cox, 40-1); #20 Kingsbarns (Pletcher, 80-1); #21 Litigate (Pletcher, 80-1); #22 Loggins (Cox, 20-1); #23 Lugan Knight (Michael McCarthy, 50-1); #24 Practical Move (Tim Yakteen, 80-1): #25 Prairie Hawk (Saffie Joseph Jr., 99-1); #26 Recruiter (Cal Lynch, 99-1); #27 Rocket Can (Bill Mott, 99-1); #28 Shesterkin (Pletcher, 80-1); #29 Shopper's Revenge (Asmussen, 80-1); #30 Signator (Shug McGaughey, 40-1); #31 Sun Thunder (Kenny McPeek, 99-1); #32 Tapit Shoes (Cox, 50-1); #33 Tapit Trice (Pletcher, 30-1); #34 Tapit's Conquest (Cox, 99-1); #35 Two Phil's (Larry Rivelli, 80-1); #36 Verifying (Cox, 40-1); #37 Victory Formation (Cox, 30-1); #38 Wildatlanticstorm (Ray Ashford Jr., 50-1); #39 “All 3-Year-Old Fillies” (30-1); and #40 “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings” (6-5).

In total, there are 17 new betting interests in Pool 3 from Pool 2: Angel of Empire, Arctic Arrogance, Banishing, Confidence Game, Dubyuhnell, Gun Pilot, Jace's Road, Kingsbarns, Lugan Knight, Prairie Hawk, Shesterkin, Shopper's Revenge, Sun Thunder, Tapit Shoes, Tapit Trice, Two Phil's and Wildatlanticstorm.

As with the first two pools, betting interest No. 39 is an option for gamblers to wager on “All 3-Year-Old Fillies.” In Pool 2, it closed at odds 29-1 and 37-1 in Pool 1. Two of the nation's top 3-year-old fillies have already been listed as early nominees to become eligible against open company in the March 25, $1 million TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2): Hoosier Philly and Wonder Wheel.

All told, there are six Future Wager pools scheduled in advance of the 2023 Kentucky Derby. The first two were held Nov. 1-3 and Nov. 24-27. Other pools will be held Feb. 10-12 (Pool 4); March 10-12 (Pool 5); and March 30-April 1 (Pool 6). The lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 5 on March 10-12.

As was the case last year, Pool 3 will assume that horses under the care of trainers suspended from competing in the 2023 Kentucky Derby will not be under consideration. Instead, they will be included within the pari-mutuel field.

There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Should Churchill Downs officials determine during the duration of this week's three-day pool that one of the wagering interests has experienced an injury, illness or other circumstance that would prevent the horse from participating in the Kentucky Derby, betting on the individual horse will be suspended immediately.

More information, Brisnet.com past performances and real-time odds on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager will be available before the pool opens Friday online at https://www.kentuckyderby.com/wager/future-wager.

Breeders’ Cup Classic Named Longines World’s Best Horse Race For 2022

The Longines Breeders' Cup Classic has been named the 2022 Longines World's Best Horse Race at the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities' (IFHA) Longines World Racing Awards.

“Breeders' Cup is honored and humbled to have received this award in a year that has seen amazing Thoroughbred racing in the U.S. and around the world,” said Breeders' Cup President and CEO Drew Fleming.

Fleming took the stage at the 2022 Longines World Racing Awards ceremony hosted at the historic Banqueting House in London to receive the prestigious award. He proclaimed this year's Longines Breeders' Cup Classic “a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any sports fan,” and thanked Longines and the IFHA, as well as 2022 World Championships host Keeneland Race Course and the Breeders' Cup staff, Board of Directors, members and nominators from around the world.

The Longines World's Best Horse Race is determined by averaging the rankings of the first four placed horses. The 2022 Classic earned a 126.75 rating. This is the second time the Breeders' Cup Classic has been honored.

Today's ceremony was also highlighted by the crowning of Longines Breeders' Cup Classic winner Flightline as the 2022 Longines World's Best Racehorse. Flightline capped off a legendary career when he won the crowning race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships by a record 8¼ lengths.

“Breeders' Cup was proud to witness and be a part of his stunning victory and the dazzling performances of all of our runners at Keeneland in November,” said Fleming after the event in London. “We all feel privileged to be recognized today alongside a horse like Flightline as well as his incredibly committed connections.”

Frankie Dettori, Chantal Sutherland Confirmed For Saudi Cup International Jockeys Challenge

Frankie Dettori is among the first group of superstar riders confirmed to compete in the Saudi Cup International Jockeys Challenge at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh on Feb. 24, 2023.

The Italian will make his 11th seasonal appearance in Saudi Arabia, where he has ridden six winners from 72 rides, on what promises to be his final year in the saddle.

Asked what it meant to be invited to ride in the IJC, which is held on the Friday of Saudi Cup weekend, Dettori said: “In my final year as a jockey I want to go to as many places as possible and being able to compete in the IJC at The Saudi Cup is a huge event that I'm delighted to be a part of.

“This will be one of my final chances to share a weighing room with some of the world's greatest jockeys, and I look forward to seeing who else I'm going to come up against. Joao Moreira has been confirmed, as has last year's winner Caitlin Jones, so the competition already looks pretty fierce!”

“I know both the dirt and the turf tracks well having ridden in Riyadh quite a lot over the years, and it's a place I enjoy riding at as it's very fair and the surfaces are always in great condition. It's also a great warm-up event for the big Group races on the Saturday, and of course The Saudi Cup itself, which I'd love to win.”

Australian rider Caitlin Jones won last year's IJC and has been invited back to defend her title.

Speaking about her experience of riding in and winning the IJC in 2022, Jones said: “It's hard to believe it's nearly been a year since I rode in the International Jockeys Challenge. It was extra special to ride alongside Glen Boss during his last hurrah and have him standing on the podium with me. That's a memory I will never forget.

“I hadn't had much experience on a dirt track, but it was a great surface to race on. You could travel wherever you were and if you were good enough you could win from anywhere. There wasn't a lot of kickback, it's an elite surface on every level. They've done a wonderful job with it.

“I couldn't be happier to have been asked to come back and try to retain my title – it would be pretty cheeky if I managed it, wouldn't it?! I'll be going out there with every intention of taking it out a second time, but you need a lot of luck with the horses you get drawn. I can't wait to be back competing in Saudi Arabia again.”

Four-time Hong Kong Champion Jockey, Joao Moreira, is another of the high-profile names to be confirmed to ride in the four-race challenge.

The Brazilian is back in his native land after leaving Hong Kong last year but is planning to ride more internationally in the coming months.

Moreira said: “I'm excited and looking forward to riding in the International Jockeys Challenge. This is a great opportunity for me to ride in a place I've never been before, and I wouldn't miss a chance to ride at a different racecourse and to get that stamp on my CV.

“I've heard the infrastructure is good over there and I've no doubt that the event they are going to put on will be top-class. Whoever is there, I'm sure they are going to see some great riders doing their best and putting on a very good show.

“Frankie's just a brilliant rider, he's the best. Getting the chance to ride with him once again is fantastic.”

The second of the seven female riders to be confirmed is Canadian Chantal Sutherland, who has ridden over 1,200 winners, including three Grade 1s to date, and is set to take her first rides in Saudi Arabia.

Sutherland said: “It's a huge opportunity which I'm super excited about. I've never been to Saudi but it's always been on the bucket list as I love these jockey challenges. I've had a really good year in Florida so far and I can't wait to head over.

“To ride against the likes of Frankie [Dettori] and Caitlin Jones is a real honor. I know Frankie well and have ridden against him plenty of times – he's a lot of fun and the crowds always love him. Any one of us could win it, but I'm going to give it my all – I'd love to come out on top. I was obviously very lucky to come second in the Breeders' Cup Classic a few years ago, but if I could win the IJC it would top that.

“Racing in Saudi is getting bigger and bigger and everyone I've spoken to has been really positive about it. The prize money is absolutely amazing, and I'm really excited to be part of it all.”

The International Jockeys Challenge features four handicap races, each run for $400,000, with a further $100,000 prize fund for the challenge itself.

The jockeys are made up of seven international female riders, five international men and two local men with the jockeys receiving 15% of prize money won in each of the four races.

All races will consist of 14 runners and five reserves, with all 14 jockeys riding in each race.

Two races will be staged on dirt and two on turf, with the distances ranging from 1200m to 2100m.
