Seven New Stallions To Stand In Ontario In 2023

Seven new stallions are joining the Ontario ranks in 2023, as the provincial breeding program continues to be one of fastest growing jurisdictions in North America.

Avie's Flatter, Collusion Illusion, Mohaymen, Serve The King (GB), and Tamarkuz will all stand stud in Ontario for the first time, while Ami's Flatter and Guipago return to the province.

Serve The King (GB), Avie's Flatter, and Collusion Illusion are freshman stallions, who all achieved graded stakes success on the racetrack.

Serve The King (GB) was victorious at the Grade 2 level and placed at the Grade 1 level on turf. Ontario-bred Avie's Flatter was a versatile runner who won or was placed in stakes ranging from six furlongs to 1 1/2 miles, on all surfaces; Tapeta, turf and dirt.

Serve The King (GB) will stand at Yorktech Racing Stables and Avie's Flatter at Colebrook Farms.

Collusion Illusion was a multiple graded stakes winner at six furlongs, including the Grade 1 Bing Crosby and was graded stakes placed at seven furlongs.

He will stand at Ballycroy Bloodstock alongside Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz who arrives in Ontario after standing stud at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky since 2017. Learn more details about the pair's arrival Ontario here.

Mohaymen is by leading sire Tapit, and was a multiple graded stakes winner of just under $1 million on the racetrack. Since entering stud in 2018, his runners have won at the graded stakes, and black type level. He was North America's #10 first-crop sire in 2021 and will stand at Northern Dawn Stables.

Rounding out the fresh faces in 2023 are Ami's Flatter and Guipago. Ami's Flatter returns to Ontario after standing three seasons at Ocala Stud in Florida, and Guipago previously stood in Ontario from 2015-2017. They will stand at T.C. Westmeath Stud Farm and Jecara Farms respectively.

In addition to the seven new stallions, all three of Ontario's leading sires will return in 2023.

Reigning top Ontario sire Silent Name (JPN) will stand at Adena Springs. The 21-year-old son of Sunday Silence had six runners crack the $100,000 mark in 2022 led by Cup and Saucer winner Phillip My Dear.

Souper Speedy finished second on Ontario's sire list in 2022. Il Malocchio was his top runner this past year. Her 4-year-old campaign was highlighted by a win in the G3 Maple Leaf at Woodbine.

Rounding out the top three is Reload. Poulin in O T was his leading runner, as the gelding put together a 2-year-old campaign that saw him earn three stakes wins and over $200,000.

Rillito To Test StrideSafe Sensors At 2023 Mixed Meet

Rillito Park in Tucson, Ariz., will test StrideSafe technology at its 2023 meet in hopes of improving the track's safety record and using the system on racing Quarter Horses for the first time.

Rillito general manager Mike Weiss announced the project at the most recent Arizona Racing Commission meeting, held on Jan. 12.

StrideSafe is a device which uses three accelerometers and GPS to identify changes in a horse's high-speed movement. So far it has been utilized prospectively in New York, where it collected data from 6,626 starts. The device generated 12 percent of what its users called “red alert” flags from its data collection. During the same period, there were 20 fatal breakdowns, 18 of which had generated red alert ratings in the horse's final race.

Read more about StrideSafe in our reporting from this year's Global Symposium On Racing

“After the Rillito Park research, major tracks around the world could potentially employ StrideSafe biometric sensors to identify horses with a potential for significant injury to horses and riders,” said Weiss.

Rillito struggled with fatal injuries during its 2022 season. The track made local headlines when its opening weekend saw multiple fatalities. The track saw seven deaths from 63 races in the first four weeks of its meet.

The 2023 StrideSafe project will be managed in part by students at the University of Arizona's Race Track Industry Program to help analyze the sensor reading information. Readings will be taken on at least 1,000 Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, and organizers hope all entries in all races during the meet will have the sensors on board.

Rillito's field safety stewards' aides will also work together to identify horses they think should wear StrideSafe in workouts and be subjected to a pre-workout examination by track regulatory veterinarians.

Longtime racing steward Dan Fick will assist in overseeing the StrideSafe project and will determine next steps after a horse receives a red rating, which would likely include placing on the veterinarian's list.

The total cost of using the technology for the upcoming mixed meet, which runs Feb. 4 through April 2, is about $45,000. Weiss said Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale has pledged a donation of $30,000 to cover part of the costs, and Rillito Park Foundation has agreed to shoulder the remaining $15,000.

“I believe it will be worth it,” Weiss said. “We are going to be a track that the entire world will be looking at.”

The feature race of the two-day Juddmonte Irish Oaks Weekend on Saturday, July 22, the Juddmonte Irish Oaks has been won three times by horses carrying the Juddmonte colours with Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) (2017), Bolas (GB) (Unfuwain) (1994) and Wemyss Bight (GB) (Dancing Brave) in 1993. Currently there are 87 first entries for the €500,000 summer Classic, including Juddmonte's debut winner Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}). Juddmonte started as the sponsor of the G2 Beresford S. in 1988; sponsored the G1 Pretty Polly S. in 2018, and began sponsoring the Irish Oaks in 2020.

It is extremely important to Juddmonte to support Irish racing and breeding and appreciate its sizeable contribution to the wider industry; we feel the Irish Oaks and Curragh racecourse are perfectly placed to demonstrate this commitment.”

Brian Kavanagh, CEO Curragh Racecourse, Ltd., said “We are delighted to be able to announce the extension of Juddmonte's sponsorship of the Irish Oaks and look forward to a quality renewal as always in July. Juddmonte have been fantastic supporters of the Curragh and of the industry here in Ireland for many years as owners, breeders and sponsors and we greatly look forward to our continued partnership with them in this prestigious race. The Irish Oaks has been won by some wonderful fillies over the years, including the great Enable in 2017.”

Starting their sponsorship of the Phoenix S. in 2010, Keeneland will extend their commitment to the race for another three years. In 2022, Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) took the prize and was crowned Europe's Champion 2-Year-old with a mark of 124. Prize-money will increase to €350,000 in 2024 and then €400,000 in 2025.

Shannon Arvin, President and CEO of Keeneland, said, “Keeneland's close connection with the Irish bloodstock and racing industries goes back many decades and we are delighted to celebrate that ongoing bond with the continuation of this longstanding sponsorship.

“We witnessed Little Big Bear win one of the best renewals of the Keeneland Phoenix S. last season, with a performance that this week saw him crowned Europe's champion juvenile, and we look forward to working with the Curragh to continue to grow the race in future years.”

Added Kavanagh, “Keeneland have been a valued partner for the Curragh for many years and we are delighted to be able to announce this extension and enhancement of their sponsorship. They are a pleasure to deal with and the ties between Keeneland and the Irish racing and breeding industries have become stronger in recent years. Their commitment to increasing prize-money for the race over the next three years is most welcome and we greatly look forward to working with Keeneland on this sponsorship.”
