L Street Lady Draws Off To Win Xtra Heat In Stakes Debut

Madaket Stables' L Street Lady, making just her third career start and first in a stakes, pressed favored Chickieness before taking over at the top of the stretch and sprinting clear to a 2 ¼-length triumph in Saturday's $100,000 Xtra Heat at Laurel Park.

The six-furlong Xtra Heat for 3-year-old fillies is the first in the state's series of stakes for 3-year-old fillies leading up to the Black-Eyed Susan (G2) May 19 at Pimlico Race Course. It was the first of six stakes Saturday worth $550,000 in purses on the Winter Sprintfest program, anchored by the $100,000 Spectacular Bid for 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Jevian Toledo for trainer Brittany Russell, L Street Lady ($4.80) completed the distance in 1:12.81 over a fast main track for her second straight win, both over the main track, after running third in her unveiling last October over the Laurel turf.

“The first time she probably needed that education. She learned a lot,” Russell said. “She broke her maiden the next time very professionally, so I had confidence mentally she could handle it.”

Chickieness, the Maryland Million Lassie winner last October that came into the Xtra Heat off a 3 ¾-length score sprinting 5 ½ furlongs in mid-December, broke sharply from the rail and took the lead where she was quickly joined by L Street Lady to her outside through fractions of :23.02 and :47.63. The top two steadily opened up on the competition and raced together until straightening for home when L Street Lady took command and drew away.

“I just sort of told Toledo to be smart and stay on her. We knew the filly inside her was going to go so you didn't want to let her get too much of an advantage,” Russell said. “He did a great job. It was a great setup and she responded at the end.”

Chickieness was 8 ¾ lengths ahead of We'll See in third, followed by Filtered Light and Grace and Charm. Ojitos Bellos was scratched.

L Street Lady is a daughter of Munnings out of the Scat Daddy mare Lady Gayle. She was bred in Kentucky by T & G Farm of Kentucky LLC, and was sold by Denali Stud to BSW/Crow for $125,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky select yearling sale. Saturday's win boosted her career earnings to $96,400.

Next up in the stakes series for sophomore fillies is the seven-furlong, $100,000 Wide Country Feb. 18, one-mile; $100,000 Beyond the Wire March 18 at 1 1/16 miles; and $125,000 Weber City Miss April 22, a 'Win and In' qualifier to the 1 1/8-mile Black-Eyed Susan.

“I'll talk to the group,” Russell said. “We'll enjoy today and make a decision.”

The Xtra Heat honors the champion 3-year-old filly of 2001 and 2015 Hall of Famer that won 26 races, 25 in stakes, and nearly $2.4 million in purses from 36 starts between 2000 and 2003. Racing primarily for Marylanders Harry Deitchman and Kenneth Taylor and trainer John Salzman Sr., who purchased her for $5,000 as a 2-year-old in training, she won at least one graded stakes every year she raced and 11 in all, including the Prioress (G1) and back-to-back editions of the Barbara Fritchie (G2), and was also multiple Grade 1-placed against males.

Cox-Trained Jace’s Road, Corona Bolt Among Eight Expected For Oaklawn’s Southwest

Eight 3-year-olds, including trainer Brad Cox's stakes-winning pair of Jace's Road and Corona Bolt, are expected for the $750,000 Southwest (G3), Oaklawn's second of four Kentucky Derby (G1) points races, set for Jan. 28 at the Hot Springs, Ark. track.

Entries will be drawn Monday for the Southwest, which offers 40 points (20-8-6-4-2, respectively) to the top five finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby.

In addition to Jace's Road and Corona Bolt, who are among a maybe dozen Derby prospects for Cox, the Oaklawn racing department Saturday morning listed six other expected entrants Southwest: Protege for trainer Ron Moquett, Bourbon Bash for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, El Tomate (Miguel Angel Silva), Frosted Departure (Kenny McPeek), Hit Show (Cox), and Sun Thunder (McPeek).

Unbeaten Corona Bolt will be making his two-turn debut in the 1 1/16-mile Southwest. After breaking his maiden Nov. 19 at Churchill Downs, Stonestreet Stables' Bolt d'Oro colt scored a front-running 6 ¾-length victory in the Sugar Bowl Stakes at six furlongs Dec. 26 at Fair Grounds in his most recent start.

Jace's Road was a front-running 5 ½-length winner of the Gun Runner Stakes at 1 1/16 miles the same day at Fair Grounds in his most recent outing. The Quality Road colt, campaigned by West Point Thoroughbreds and Albaugh Family Stables LLC, currently sits in fourth place on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 13 points.

Lightly raced Protege will make his stakes and 2023 debut in the race, said Moquett, of Hot Springs, Ark.

Protege has a 1-0-1 record from three lifetime starts for Moquett and owners Harry Rosenblum of Little Rock, Ark., Robert LaPenta, and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners (Aaron Wellman).

From the first crop of former 2-year-old champion Good Magic, who was runner-up in the 2018 Kentucky Derby, Protege concluded his 2-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in an entry-level allowance at one mile Dec. 17 at Oaklawn. Protege was beaten 4 1/2 lengths by probable Southwest entrant Hit Show after breaking in at the start.

“It was his first time going around two turns,” said Moquett, who teamed with Rosenblum and LaPenta to win the 2015 Southwest with Far Right. “He had a little bit of a traffic situation. I thought he showed plenty of ability and looking forward to see how he's progressing.”

Frosted Departure, a Frosted colt owned by C&H Diamond Racing LLC and Sherri McPeek's Magdalena Racing, won the inaugural Renaissance Stakes at six furlongs Dec. 31 at Oaklawn to conclude a nine-race 2-year-old campaign.

R.T Racing Stable's Sun Thunder, by leading sire Into Mischief, scored a debut win by 6 ½ lengths Dec. 31 at Oaklawn.

Frosted Departure and Sun Thunder were among four winners for trainer Ken McPeek on the Dec. 31 card, Oaklawn's first exclusively for 2-year-olds.

Oaklawn's Kentucky Derby points series continues with the $1-million Rebel Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 25 and the $1.25-million Arkansas Derby (G1) at 1 1/8 miles April 1.

Post positions also will be drawn Monday for the $200,000 Martha Washington for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles and the $150,000 King Cotton for older horses at six furlongs.

McPeek will send out one of the favorites in the Martha Washington in Defining Purpose, who was a sparkling 5 ¼ length winner of the inaugural Year's End Stakes at 1 mile Dec. 31 at Oaklawn.

Other expected Martha Washington starters include Homecoming Queen for trainer Rodolphe Brisset, Olivia Twist (Todd Fincher) and Take Charge Briana (Lukas).

Olivia Twist (3 for 3) won the Trapeze Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at one mile Dec. 17 at Remington Park in her last start.

Take Charge Briana finished third in the Year's End.

The Martha Washington is Oaklawn's first of three Kentucky Oaks (G1) points races. Secret Oath won the Martha Washington and Kentucky Oaks last year for Lukas.

The Martha Washington is a major local prep for the $600,000 Fantasy Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles April 1.

Early King Cotton probables include Flash of Mischief for trainer Karl Broberg and Tejano Twist for 2015 Oaklawn training champion Chris Hartman.

Flash of Mischief won the inaugural $150,000 Ring the Bell Stakes at 6 furlongs Dec. 10 at Oaklawn in his last start. Late-running Tejano Twist has won his last three starts, including a Jan. 6 allowance sprint at Oaklawn.

The King Cotton is a major local prep for the $500,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) at 6 furlongs April 15.

Long-Term Study: Owners Pleased With PPID Treatment Pergolide

Pergolide has been the drug of choice to treat horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID or Cushing's disease) for decades. It has proven to effectively control clinical signs of PPID, but studies on long-term use have been lacking.

Dr. Harold Schott and researchers at Michigan State University followed 28 horses and 2 ponies that were given pergolide for diagnosed Cushing's disease; 15 were on one pergolide tablet (1 mg) a day and 15 were on two tablets a day. The equids were treated with the medication for up to 12.5 years.

To determine how the horses were handling treatment, the owners were contacted by the study team every three months. The animals were also examined at various intervals.

The team reported that five equines were euthanized for PPIR-associated laminitis and that 24 died or were euthanized for other age-related conditions. The animals survived for 0.6 to 12.5 years, with 3.3 years being the median survival time. One animal was still alive at the conclusion of the study.

Owners of 13 of the equids reported continuing clinical improvement after 5.5 years. This included a better appetite, a healthier hair coat, and fewer laminitis issues. After 5.5 years, 75 percent of the test horses had normal endocrine results.

Seven of the 15 horses that began on a one-tablet dose were increased to two tablets each day. Overall, owners reported being happy with their horse's response to long-term pergolide treatment.
