TAA Holiday Giving Campaign Ends With $10,000 New Year’s Eve Matching Pledge From Bob And Jill Baffert

To culminate the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)'s month-long Holiday Giving Campaign, Bob and Jill Baffert have pledged to match all donations up to $10,000 made to the TAA on Dec. 31, 2022.

Not only does New Year's Eve mark the end of the TAA's holiday fundraiser, but the Baffert's $10K match donation is the largest of the campaign. Every donation made to the TAA this Saturday will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Bob and Jill Baffert up to $10K, meaning you could help raise $20,000 towards the care of thousands of retired racehorses across North America.

Through their support of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), TAA-accredited Old Friends, among others, the Baffert's continue to advocate for and designate funds to organizations working to improve the lives of off-track Thoroughbreds. In addition to their financial and advocacy support, Jill is also a member of the TAA Advisory Board.

The two-time Triple Crown winning trainer values responsible racehorse ownership. Several of Baffert's top earning horses in 2022 are connected to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance supporting owners, including Commonwealth, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing, to name a few.

“Every racing season, these horses give us the thrill of a lifetime, bringing immeasurable joy. We all should remember that this holiday season when we stop to count our blessings and express gratitude,” said Jill Baffert. “There is no better way to do that than by contributing to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, which assures that all horses are treated with respect and care and afforded a full life of dignity after leaving the racetrack. Please join Bob and me in giving whatever you can to TAA this season.”

“Thanks to the Bafferts, the TAA Holiday Giving Campaign will end with a bang,” said TAA Funding and Events Manager Emily Dresen. “We are so excited with the incredible level of participation within the horse racing community and with the Bafferts' generous pledge we can have our biggest day of fundraising yet.”

Those wishing to support the TAA, its 81 accredited organizations, and thousands of retired Thoroughbreds can donate through the TAA's website or text DONATE to 56651. During the Holiday Giving Campaign, TAA is also offering donors the benefit of sending digital holiday cards to colleagues, friends, and loved ones.

Broadway Girls Steals The Show In Blue Norther

Fresh off her gate-to-wire maiden-breaking score in her third career start at Del Mar Nov. 13, Broadway Girls, given an unconvincing 16-1 chance for her stakes debut, showed a similar burst of speed to wire the field in Friday's Blue Norther S. Ridden hard to the front from her middle gate by jockey Edwin Maldonado, Broadway Girls was joined on her outside by Pleasant Wave (More Than Ready) into the first turn before assuming solo command through an opening quarter set in :22.79. Going easily on lead while chased by a pair of rivals just behind her, she held control as the field surged around her past the quarter pole. Challenged by a wall of closers led by 2-1 favorite Manhattan Jungle, Broadway Girls kept finding more and refused to cede the lead for the convincing win.

“She's got a lot of speed and so does Ami Please,” said winning trainer Doug O'Neill. “We knew they were fast fillies and credit to Glenn (owner, Sorgenstein, of Ami Please), he said, 'We can't both win on the lead, one (of these) horse(s) is going to be in front,' so we asked Frankie (Dettori, aboard Ami Please) to try to take off the pace to see if we could pick 'em up late and by doing that, it gave Broadway Girls a big chance.”

The fifth black-type winner for her freshman sire (by Friesan Fire), Broadway Girls has a yearling half-sister by Street Boss and a weanling half-brother by West Coast. Her dam visited Higher Power for 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

‘Top Class Horse’ Classical Cat All Heart To Capture Eddie Logan

In a driving finish, Phil D'Amato's Classical Cat was all heart as he was up to win Friday's $100,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita by a half length. Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the 2-year-old colt by the Scat Daddy stallion Mendelssohn got a mile on turf in 1:34.38.

Alert from the gate, Classical Cat was third at the rail, about 1 ½ lengths off early leader Game Time around the Club House turn, maintained his rail position heading to the far turn while into the bridle, tipped out three-deep at the top of the lane and overtook First Peace to his inside late while holding off race favorite Nagirroc to his outside in an extra game performance.

“I had Nagirroc to my outside and obviously he was the horse to beat,” said Rispoli. “I was praying that Mike Smith (aboard First Peace) would go a little bit ahead of me at the quarter pole, which would give me a chance to find room between them.

“The horse helped me. I had a ton of horse underneath and when you have gas, you can go wherever you want. I think he won easily today.”

A one mile turf allowance winner here on Oct. 23, Classical Cat got late support and was off at 2-1 in a field reduced by a pair of scratches to six 2-year-olds and paid $6.60, $3.60 and $2.40.

Owned by Michael House, Classical Cat, who is out of the Not Bourbon mare Conquest Strate Up, Classical Cat, who was purchased for $65,000 as a Keeneland September Yearling now has three wins from four starts, his last two on turf. With the winner's share of $60,000, he increased his earnings to $146,300.

“These are some nice horses here, this proves that he's a top class horse and can compete with these nice horses and other nice horses down the road,” said D'Amato. “…Down the road, we may make him maybe our Del Mar Derby kind of horse and go from there.”

First Peace, who sat second the entire trip, finished second by a half length over Nagirroc and paid $5.40 and $3.00 while off at 5-1.

Ridden by Flavien Prat and trained by Graham Motion, Nigarroc, a Grade III winner two starts back at Aqueduct and most recently third in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland Nov. 4, had no apparent excuses at even money and paid $2.20 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.47, 47.09, 1:10.47 and 1:22.40.

$100,000, EDDIE LOGAN STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

UMBERTO RISPOLI, CLASSICAL CAT, WINNER: “I had Nagirroc to my outside and obviously he was the horse to beat. I was praying that Mike Smith (First Peace) would go a little bit ahead of me at the quarter pole, which would give me a chance to find room between them. The horse helped me. I had a ton of horse underneath and when you have gas you can go whenever you want. I think he won easily today.”

TRAINER QUOTES

PHILIP D'AMATO, CLASSICAL CAT, WINNER: “Flavien (Prat, aboard Nagirroc), looked like he tried to make the earlier move on Umberto, but Umberto was able to stay in there and this horse is just such a fighter. Once he got his head in there, he kind of slowly wore down the leader. These are some really nice horses here, this proves that he's a top class horse and can compete with these nice horses and other nice horses down the road.

“We try to train and put that (fight) in them but more times than not they either have it or they don't. We may have another race in a month, we will see, but down the road we want to make him maybe our Del Mar Derby kind of horse and go from there.”

NOTES: The winning owner is Michael House.
