Into Mischief ‘Rising Star’ On Best Behavior in Untapable

Pretty Mischievous made it a clean sweep of the afternoon's two-turn juvenile stakes for 'TDN Rising Stars' with a good-looking success in Monday's Untapable S. at the Fair Grounds.

Made the 8-5 second pick off a third behind the promising Hoosier Philly (Into Mischief) in the GII Golden Rod S. at Churchill Downs Nov. 26, the Godolphin homebred broke well from the rail draw and enjoyed the run of the race from just in behind. Allowed to take a two-path run passing the 4 1/2-furlong marker, Pretty Mischievous had a head in front as they turned for home, pinched a winning break and ran out a four-length winner over The Alys Look (Connect). Favored Vahva (Gun Runner) bombed the start and raced at the back of the field, but finished off nicely and did well to fill third spot, albeit well-beaten.

A second stakes winner on the card, joining Letellier Memorial S. victress Dazzling Blue, Into Mischief now sits on 118 stakes winners. Through Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, Godolphin acquired 2016 GI Spinaway S. dead-heater Pretty City Dancer for $3.5 million at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. A half-sister to Grade I winner Lear's Princess (Lear Fan), Pretty City Dancer is also responsible for Ornamental (Medaglia d'Oro), a maiden winner at Indiana Grand Oct. 25, and a weanling filly by Medaglia d'Oro. The mare was most recently bred to Street Sense. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Quality Road ‘Rising Star’ Makes Amends in Gun Runner

'TDN Rising Star' Jace's Road (Quality Road) took advantage of a bit of a stumbling start from favored Determinedly (Cairo Prince) to lead past every pole for a maiden stakes success in Monday's Gun Runner S. at the Fair Grounds.

Sent off the 14-5 second favorite off a forgettable and forgivable eighth-place effort as the favorite in a sloppy renewal of the GIII Street Sense S. at Churchill Downs Oct. 30, the $510,000 Keeneland September graduate found his way to the front as Determinedly–off at 4-5–bobbled slightly and though pressured, was able to race well within himself for the opening three-quarters of a mile. Narrowly in front as they reached the long Fair Grounds straight, he responded to a vigorous Florent Geroux drive from and kept finding through the final furlong to score nicely by five lengths. Raise Cain (Violence) was up on the line to touch the odds-on pop out of second.

Named a 'Rising Star' on Ellis debut back in August, Jace's Road was an educational third in the GIII Iroquois S. Sept. 17, but was reportedly out of sorts from as early as the paddock prior to the Street Sense, was rambunctious and dropped Geroux at the gates pre-start, caught a sloppy track to boot and did no running whatsoever.

The 65th stakes winner for Quality Road, Jace's Road hails from the female family of champion Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy) and GISW Forest Secrets (Forest Wildcat) and has a weanling half-sister by Curlin. Out Post was barren to Quality Road for 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Arrogate’s Fun to Dream Gives Baffert Record La Brea Win

Jill Baffert and Connie Pageler's Fun to Dream, beaten just once now in six trips to the post, scored her first graded victory with a determined win in the GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita Monday.

Fun to Dream shadowed the pacesetters three wide down the backstretch. She stuck her head in front at the top of the lane and held Awake at Midnyte–the only horse so far to have finished in front of her–at bay down to the wire to score by 3/4 lengths.

“This horse is getting really, really good,” said winning jockey Juan Hernandez. “She's improving a lot, and she's shown up in her last couple of starts. Today, she was traveling very smoothly on the back side, and she broke sharp. Then after that, I felt like I had a ton of control. Turning for home I asked her to switch leads and pick it up, and she did the rest.”

Winning trainer–and co-breeder–Bob Baffert saddled four of the seven fillies in the La Brea and was earning his record ninth win in the race, as well as his fourth victory on Santa Anita's opening-day card Monday.

“All the fillies, they were doing so well, and I was hoping that one of them would get there and she just got the perfect trip, outside,” Baffert said. “Juan just sat there, and you could tell he was loving it, turning for home. I'm sitting next to my wife Jill, and she can't believe what she's seeing.”

The Cal-bred Fun to Dream, who was bred by Bob Baffert and Pageler, was a debut winner in May, and captured the Fleet Treat S. in her second outing in July. She suffered her first loss when second, but disqualified to ninth, behind Awake at Midnyte in a Sept. 4 optional claimer at Del Mar. She stretched out to 1 1/16 miles and returned to the winner's circle with a 4 3/4-length victory in an Oct. 1 optional claimer and was coming off a narrow victory against state-bred foes in the seven-furlong Betty Grable S. at Del Mar Nov. 13.

“You breed these horses, hoping for this moment,” Baffert said. “Arrogate, I had to breed a mare to him and now, she is a Grade I winner. It looks like she's just getting better and better. She doesn't know she's a Cal-bred.”

Pedigree Notes:

Bob Baffert claimed Lutess on behalf of Live Your Dream Racing for $8,000 out of her final career start in 2012. She is also the dam of multiple stakes winner Heck Yeah (Acclamation). She produced colts by Smiling Tiger in 2021 and 2022 and was bred back to that sire this year.

Fun to Dream is the fourth graded winner for the late Arrogate, who was represented by 2022 Grade I winners Cave Rock, And Tell Me Nolies, and Secret Oath.

Into Mischief Filly Stays Unbeaten with Fair Grounds Stakes

Dazzling Blue (Into Mischief–Blue Violet, by Curlin) came into the Letellier Memorial S. as the 1-2 favorite and ran to her odds, securing her second daylight score in two tries to remain unbeaten. The Juddmonte runner–a $500,000 purchase as a Keeneland September yearling from WinStar–rushed up to take the lead under Florent Geroux after being bumped by her inside rival out of the gate and giving ground as she found her stride. She found it quickly and had measured control of the pace while registering a :22.18 first quarter and a :46.45 half. The bay drew clear in the lane for a commanding and frontrunning win as previously unbeaten three-time winner Condensation (Frosted) closed to trail her home three lengths in arrears.

Trainer Brad Cox and Geroux had also teamed up to win the Sugar Bowl S. earlier on the Fair Grounds card with Corona Bolt (Bolt d'Oro).

The Letellier winner's only previous start was in a Nov. 16 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs, where she turned in a similar effort, also under Geroux, to score by 4 1/2 lengths as the favorite.

Dazzling Blue's dam has slipped the last two years, but was bred to current leading freshman sire Bolt d'Oro for next term.
