Grade 1-Placed G Laurie Ships West For Friday’s Blue Norther At Santa Anita

G Laurie, third in the Grade 1 Natalma at Woodbine in her most recent start, has come west seeking a stakes victory in Friday's $100,000 Blue Norther as a field of 11 2-year-old fillies go a mile on the turf at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

Prior to her promising run in the one-mile Natalma, G Laurie debuted with a romping six-length victory going mile on grass at Colonial Downs on Aug. 23 for trainer Graham Motion. The Oscar Performance filly arrived at Santa Anita earlier this month and worked a bullet last Thursday when completing four furlongs in 48 seconds.

Madaket Stables' G Laurie will be ridden by Juan Hernandez, who won four races on opening day including two Grade 1's.

Manhattan Jungle is one of three trained by Michael McCarthy in the Blue Norther. Twice a stakes winner in Europe, Manhattan Jungle came stateside for the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland and checked in eighth at 80-1 for previous trainer Amy Murphy on Nov. 4. She is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and will be ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez.

The local contingent has several that are exiting the G3 Jimmy Durante at Del Mar going this same trip on Dec. 3. Leading that group is Decorated My Life, who finished second at 20-1 in the Durante when making her U.S. bow for trainer Simon Callaghan. Owned by CYBT and Michael Nentwig, the Irish-bred daughter of Mehmas was 1-for-4 in her native country prior to shipping to the U.S.

Joe Bravo, who was aboard for the Durante, retains the mount on Decorated My Life.

Also exiting the Durante is Thebestisyettobe, who finished a troubled sixth at 4-1. She has top connections in her corner with trainer Phil D'Amato and jockey Flavien Prat but is relegated to the also-eligible list and would need a scratch to run.

Student Elle Sorensen Heads To Hunter Valley Farm Courtesy Of Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation

The board of the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation would like to congratulate Elle Sorensen, a resident of County Limerick, who is one of the Foundation's 2023 Scholarship winners.

Sorensen will be placed at Hunter Valley Farm in Lexington, Ky., for the upcoming breeding season. Hunter Valley will provide a great opportunity for her to learn and develop with a leading Thoroughbred boarding and sales consignment operation at the center of Kentucky's bloodstock region.

Hunter Valley Farm co-owner Adrian Regan remarked: “Fergus Galvin and I are really looking forward to welcoming Elle to Kentucky – hopefully, we can do half as good a job as Gerry did, with educating his students.”

Sorensen is currently studying equine science at the University of Limerick and is a third-year student. While working in Michael Hourigan's national hunt yard at Lisaleen stables during secondary school, she learned the basics of the Thoroughbred racing industry. During college, she developed a keen interest in Thoroughbred bloodstock and breeding and gained valuable work and sales experience with leading county Limerick farms Rathmore Stud and Croom House Stud.

She shared: “Thanks to the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship Foundation, I have been awarded this amazing opportunity to travel to America and further my knowledge, education, and passion for the industry at Hunter Valley Farm.”

Justify Colt Yuttitham Posts Another Impressive Win at Hanshin

6th-Hanshin, ¥14,250,000 ($106,284), Allowance, 2yo, 1800m, 1:53.9, ft.
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa {GISW, $783,550}, by City Zip) improved for a debut second at Sapporo Aug. 27 to graduate by eight lengths when last seen over this course and distance Dec. 3 and was a warm item to put them back-to-back in this seasonal finale. Beaten for speed, the flashy chestnut was content to punch the breeze three wide and was poised to strike from the position as they neared the straight. Asked for his best by premiership-winning jockey Yuga Kawada with a furlong and a half to run, Yuttitham opened up with fluid strides and went on to score by three lengths as the 1-2 chalk. Upset winner of the 2017 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland for Empyrean Stables and trainer Michael Stidham, Zipessa was hammered down to Shadai for $1.25 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale and was bred to this Triple Crown winner before heading to Japan.  The investment was immediately recouped when Makoto Kaneko–in whose silks the legendary Deep Impact (Jpn) was campaigned–paid ¥200 million for the colt at last year's JRHA Select Sales. Yuttitham has a yearling half-brother by Isla Bonita (Jpn) that fetched ¥76 million ($558,835) at this year's Select Sale and a weanling half-sister by Deep Impact's son Kizuna (Jpn). Zipessa is due to Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) for 2023. Sales history: $1,815,520 Ylg '21 JRHAJUL. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $$115,019.
