Stuart Morris Moved to Cardinal Hill

Stuart Morris, who suffered a stroke Christmas Eve morning, has been moved to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, according to Carrie Brogden, who is keeping his supporters updated through a GoFundMe page she set up for him. Morris has spent the last few days hospitalized at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Cardinal Hill specializes in rehabilitation after stroke, brain injury, and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions.

Brogden shared Morris was now able to slightly move his left arm, which had been stricken with paralysis. The stroke also left him with partial function of his left leg and slurred speech.

“Now that he is here [at Cardinal Hill], he's really wanting to get into his therapy routine and work hard,” said his longtime girlfriend, Patty Mitchell.

Mitchell asked for limited calls and no visitors through the weekend as Morris adjusts to his new routine.

Duramente’s Dura Erede Ekes Out Hopeful Win

Making his fifth career start and his first in Group 1 company in Wednesday's G1 Hopeful S. at Nakayama, Dura Erede (Jpn) parlayed a close fourth-place finish last out in the G2 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai S. on Nov. 19 to claim victory at odds of 89-1 by a nose over 17-1 outsider and pacesetter Top Knife (Jpn).

The colt received a stalking trip to the outside of the frontrunner for the first mile before reaching even terms with his leading rival at the top of the stretch. After falling back briefly within the last furlong, dug in gamely in the final yards to surge past the wire in front by the narrowest of margins.

“It's the same good feeling as when I won my first G1 race in Germany–I'm very happy,” winning jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev said. “I couldn't tell if we won, it was so close, but my colt broke well and it was the plan to chase the pace in second so everything went well. After two close seconds last weekend, I'm so happy that I came in first in the last Grade 1 race of the year.”

Favored Mikki Cappuccino finished fifth at odds of 3-1.

Pedigree Notes:
Dura Erede is the fourth Grade 1 winner for the late stallion Duramente, who died in August of 2021 at age nine. Dura Erede is the first foal out of the unplaced Orfevre (Jpn) mare Marchesa, who is out of the Argentine MG1W Malpensa (Arg) and therefore a half to Japanese champion and MG1SW winner Satono Diamond (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Grade 1 Winner On Dirt, Queen Goddess Leads Saturday’s Robert J. Frankel On Turf

Idle since mid-May, the Michael McCarthy-trained Queen Goddess, a Grade 1 winner a year ago on dirt, heads a wide-open field of 11 fillies and mares three going a mile and one eighth on turf Saturday in Santa Anita's Grade 3, $100,000 Robert J. Frankel Stakes.

A 4-year-old filly by Empire Maker, Queen Goddess, most recently second going a mile and one half on turf here in the G3 Santa Barbara Stakes May 14, will be ridden for the first time by John Velazquez. A winner of the G3 Santa Ana Stakes at a mile and one quarter on turf two starts back on March 26, Queen Goddess thus has a win and a second place finish from two tries over the Santa Anita lawn.

Switched to the main track due to wet conditions, last year's G1 American Oaks, which was run on Dec. 26, 2021, was taken in gate to wire fashion by Queen Goddess at 14-1. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and TOLO Thoroughbreds, Inc., Queen Goddess is 9-4-2-1 overall with earnings of $410,580.

A winner of the G2 John C. Mabee Stakes at a mile and one eighth over the Del Mar turf three starts back on Sept. 10, trainer Leonard Powell's French-bred Avenue de France, a three-time stakes winner this year, comes off a fifth place effort going one mile on turf in the G1 Matriarch at Del Mar Dec. 4 and will get the first-time services of Frankie Dettori.

A dedicated deep closer, Avenue de France has had a terrific year at age five, posting a 10-3-2-1 mark with 2022 earnings of $379,004. Owned by the Benowitz Family Trust, Madaket Stables, LLC, Wonder Stables, et al, Avenue de France is 24-8-2-5 overall with career earnings of $537,066.

Trained by John Shirreffs', classy England's Rose comes off a troubled second going one mile over the Del Mar turf in the G1 Matriarch Stakes and would appreciate a fast pace to exploit as she stretches out a furlong in the Frankel with regular rider Victor Espinoza.

A restricted stakes winner and three-time graded stakes placed, England's Rose seeks her first graded victory in what could be her final dance at age six. A mile and one eighth turf allowance winner over the course on Jan. 3, 2021, England's Rose, a daughter of English Channel owned by Mercedes Stables, LLC and West Point Thoroughbreds, is 12-3-4-1 with earnings of $297,940.

Phil D'Amato's Irish-bred Burgoo Alley, although beaten as the 3-2 favorite in a restricted one mile turf stakes at Del Mar Nov. 12, retains the services of Flavien Prat and will likely press the early pace on Saturday. Winless in five starts this year, 4-year-old Burgoo Alley took Santa Anita's G3 Autumn Miss Stakes seven starts back on Oct. 30, 2021 but has been winless in six starts since.

With two wins and one third place finish from six starts over the Santa Anita turf, Burgoo Alley, who is owned by Agave Racing Stable and Living the Dream Stables, LLC, is 15-3-2-1 overall with earnings of $204,974.
