Mid-Van Ride, O Besos Scratched From Cigar Mile; Churchill Issues Shipping Restrictions In Wake Of Six EHV-1 Positives

A total of six horses from one barn at Churchill Downs have now tested positive for EHV-1, according to a statement the track gave bloodhorse.com. The first case was a symptomatic horse, which has since been transferred to an equine hospital. The other five cases resulted from Wednesday's PCR testing; all are asymptomatic and have been isolated away from the remaining eight in that barn.

Churchill is now restricting the movement of horses off it's backstretch, but that rule was not in place Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. when Grade 1 Cigar Mile entrant O Besos shipped out of trainer Greg Foley's barn en route to Aqueduct. Several hours later, reports the Daily Racing Form, NYRA stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes called Foley to inform him that NYRA was no longer accepting horses from Churchill Downs onto the backstretch. O Besos, whose van was at that point halfway to New York, would have to be scratched.

“Very disappointing, we've been planning on it and I just had to call the owners to cancel their plans,” Foley told DRF. “I thought we had a big shot, it was a good spot for a Grade 1, $750,000. Very disappointing, but that's the way it is.”

O Besos was to be allowed to return to his stall at Churchill Downs.

“Churchill Downs is working closely and in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to ensure maximum effectiveness of its health and safety protocols throughout the management of this process,” reads the CDI statement given to bloodhorse.com. “The five additional horses that have tested positive for EHV-1 are asymptomatic but have been successfully isolated away from the affected barn where they will await a series of further testing. Continued testing of the horses with potential of exposure and those of the affected trainers is underway.”

Rusty Ford, equine operations consultant for the Office of the State Veterinarian at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, said officials in other states have been notified to monitor other horses who exited the now-quarantined barn.

There are nine strains of equine herpesvirus on record, and many horses are exposed to some form of EHV with no serious side effects or symptoms. Three strains are considered serious health risks, including EHV-1, which may present with fever and respiratory symptoms and can also carry neurological symptoms and a risk of death. Symptoms of the neurologic form of EHV-1 include fever and nasal discharge, followed by lack of coordination, lethargy, head tilt, and inability to balance or stand. EHV-1 is highly contagious and may be transmitted through contaminated equipment, contact between horses, and on clothing or hands of humans working with sick horses. Veterinarians aren't sure how long the virus can survive in the environment, or how well it travels through the air. The Paulick Report compiled a list of frequently-asked questions about EHV-1 during an outbreak at Sunland Park five years ago.

“With Ari's Winter Workshop happening each day in December, it's easy for families to plan a day at the Museum making holiday memories together,” said Emily Dippie, Curator of Education at the Museum. “We are excited to offer a unique way to celebrate the magic of the season with a dash of Kentucky Derby flair.”

Woodbine: Pair Of $150,000 2-Year-Old Stakes Highlight Saturday Card

A pair of $150,000 2-year-old stakes, the Clarendon and Shady Well, share the spotlight on Saturday's 11-race card at Woodbine.

Each set for six furlongs over the Tapeta, the Shady Well (2-year-old fillies) and Clarendon (2-year-olds), both for Ontario-bred or Ontario-sired rookies, have drawn six and five starters, respectively.

Owned by Borders Racing Stable Ltd. and trained by Katerina Vassilieva, Witch Hazel will chase her first stakes score. The daughter of Astern (AUS) arrives at the Shady Well off a fifth-place finish, albeit 1 ½ lengths behind the winner, in the Woodbine Cares Stakes on October 8. Sent off at 9-1 in the 5-furlong Inner Turf event, Witch Hazel was carried out in the stretch but still battled gamely to the wire.

“We were kind of unlucky in the Woodbine Cares race. I felt it was going to be a little bit too short for her. We were caught wide around the turn, but with all of that against her, she only got beat by a length and a little bit. She definitely is a trier.”

Vassilieva is expecting a strong effort from her first-year filly who brings a record of 1-1-1 from five starts into Saturday's main track co-feature.

“Unfortunately, we had to scratch out of the Glorious Song (on November 5). It was going to be a better distance (7 furlongs) for her, but she came down with a virus, so we had to bypass that race. She's been training very well since and I'm hoping this will be our turn to shine.”

Witch Hazel debuted on June 25 in a 5-furlong Tapeta test and finished second to Collecting Flatter. One race later, on July 23, she tested the turf and was fourth to Cairo Consort, who would finish second in the Grade 1 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes and third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

After a third at 6 panels over the Tapeta on August 13, the bay broke her maiden courtesy of a gutsy neck score at 6 ½ furlongs on the same surface on September 11.

“She always tries. She's never been beaten very far. I think, looking back, we knew straight away that she was going to be a nice filly. Mike Cook, who broke her in Ocala, spoke very highly of her. I went to see her in Florida, and I really like the way she trained. Once I got her to Woodbine and started training her – the first work was three-eighths in :34, by herself – I knew I had a special filly. She's very intelligent and very athletic. I always liked her.”

Bred by Bernard and Karen McCormack, Witch Hazel has had a steady work tab leading up to the Shady Well, including a 4-furlong breeze in :48.20 over the Tapeta on November 19.

“She's very professional in the mornings and afternoons. And she's a sweetheart around the barn. Everybody loves her. She always has her head poking out and she's always wanting to say hello to everyone. People can't help but go to her stall and interact with her. She's that kind of horse, very friendly and very kind.”

Poulin in O T will get his second shot at netting the natural hat trick.

The son of Reload, trained, co-owned and co-bred by Steve Owens, heads into the Clarendon off two consecutive triumphs, taking the Bull Page and Frost King to bring his record to 4-0-0 from five career starts.

Poulin in O T won his career bow in impressive fashion, a 5 ¼-length romp at 4 ½ furlongs over the Toronto oval Tapeta on June 24. One race later, the gelding was back in the winner's circle after a 3 ¼-length triumph in the 5 ½-furlong Victoria Stakes on July 17.

After a seventh in the Soaring Free, the chestnut could make it three straight stakes victories with a win in the Clarendon.

“He's very laid back and he's very well put together,” said Owens, who recorded his 300th career training win when Bodacious Miss won on November 3 at Woodbine. “He has a very muscular physique. You couldn't ask for a nicer athlete.”

The Shady Well is slated as race nine. The Clarendon is scheduled as race 10 on Saturday's 1:20 p.m. program. Fans can watch and wager on all the action with HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.

Generazio Dispersal Set for Keeneland January

A complete dispersal of horses owned by Patricia Generazio will be offered at the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale and will be consigned by Denali Stud. The sale is scheduled for Jan. 9-12.

Among the horses that will be sold are racing/broodmare prospects SW Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief), Pure Bode (Bodemeister), and Marquet Legacy (Gio Ponti), all from the families of some of the most popular graded winners developed by the Generazio operation. Among the horses campaigned by Generazio and her late husband, Frank, are GISWs Presious Passion (Royal Anthem) and Discreet Marq (Discreet Cat), as well as MGSWs Pure Sensation (Zensational) and Disco Partner (Disco Rico). The latter three were all homebreds. The Generazio operation has tallied over $32 million in earnings and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in the New York-bred program in 2020.

“We are grateful that Mrs. Generazio has entrusted us to handle this dispersal,” said Denali's Conrad Bandoroff. “For buyers, this is an incredibly exciting opportunity to tap into these black-type families that have never been offered at auction.”

Christophe Clement, who has trained for Generazio for the last decade, added: “The quality of their program is in the strength of their mares and their ability to produce high-caliber racehorses with limited opportunity in terms of the stallions that they were bred to. You can really see this with how many successful homebreds they have campaigned over the years. What they've accomplished is extraordinary.”
