Iowa Stallion Season Auction Bidding Open Through December 12

Bidding is currently underway in the 2022 Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association stallion season auction, highlighted by stallion services from Airdrie Stud, Calumet Farm, Darby Dan Farm, Darley, Gainesway, and Spendthrift Farm.

Prospective buyers can bid through Dec. 12 on stallion seasons from sires including McKinzie (Gainesway), Dialed In (Darby Dan Farm), and Keen Ice (Calumet Farm) by visiting the web site www.thoroughlybred.com/sites/itboa.

“We expect to see a very competitive auction based on the number and quality of stallion seasons up for bid this year,” said ITBOA president Steve Renftle. “The auction opened with services available from almost 150 different stallions standing in Kentucky and 18 other states.”

Thoroughlybred website visitors can access breeding and racing histories of the stallions and also click through to view detailed information provided by the stud farms.

“Proceeds from the 2022 stallion season auction will provide funding for the purses offered in the ITBOA Stallion Stakes races in 2026 and 2027,” added Renftle. “We want bidders to check the web site often because the list of donated stallion seasons is updated on a daily basis.”

Aga Khan Filly Tops Second Straight Session at Arqana

One day after the Aga Khan-bred and -consigned Shahnameh (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) topped the proceedings at the Arqana Vente d'Elevage, another of the operation's 3-year-old filly was the star turn in Deauville, as the unraced Vazzana (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) was knocked down for €120,000 to lead the way during the penultimate session of the auction.

Catalogued at lot 716, the bay filly is a daughter of Vazira (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), winner of three of her six career starts, including the 2014 G1 Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp one start after taking the G3 Prix Vanteaux at her second career run. The female family also includes fellow Prix Saint-Alary heroine Vadawina (Ire) (Unfuwain), the dam of Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and SW/MGSP Vedouma (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}); and G1 Prix du Moulin winner Vadamos (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}).

“She's a lovely mare,” said Katie Rudd, who signed the ticket on behalf of Busherstown. “She'll come back to Ireland. It's the first time I've bought at the Vente d'Elevage–the market is strong.”

Trainnah (GB), a daughter of the influential Pivotal (GB), fetched €55,000 from Jamie Piggott Bloodstock to rank as the session's second-dearest offering. Consigned by Haras de Castillon, the 9-year-old mare is a half-sister to the dual group-winning James Garfield (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and to the dam of SW & MGSP Nate The Great (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). Trainnah's dam Whazzat (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is a half-sister to the dam of US champion turf female Uni (GB) (More Than Ready). Trainnah was sold in foal to Ectot (GB).

Nearly four out of every five horses (217) offered during Monday's session were reported as sold for gross turnover of €2,540,000. The average of €11,704 improved by 12.77% over last year, while the median price of €8,500 represented a gain of 21.4%.

Entering Tuesday's final session, 613 horses have changed hands for €56,099,500. The average of €91,516 and median of €26,000 are well ahead of last year's numbers.

Former Ashwood Training Center In Lexington To Reopen Under New Management

Ashwood Training Center in Lexington, Ky., is scheduled to reopen in the coming weeks under new management and a new name, according to Michelle Dalton, who will manage the property she is leasing in partnership with trainer Matt Frazier and owner Barry Fowler.

The new name will be Three Diamonds Training Center LLC and it could reopen as soon as Dec. 15, Dalton said.

Ashwood was closed July 1 when owner Anderson Communities sought permission from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to have 12 soccer fields and 750 parking spaces developed on the property in association with the Lexington Sporting Club. After pushback from the horse industry and community members, Lexington Sporting Club withdrew their plans and found alternative property along I-75 near Athens-Boonesboro Road south of Lexington.

The training center property, whose entrance is on Russell Cave Road, is adjacent to Fasig-Tipton and Kenny McPeek's Magdalena Farm. It had previously been leased from Anderson Communities by Marc Ricker.

Dalton, a licensed trainer, said the partners signed a multi-year lease on the property, effective Dec. 1, and are beginning renovations and repairs.

“It needs a lot of work,” she said. “The first thing is to peel back the racetrack to see what needs to be done. The starting gate has to be refurbished, and there is electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work that is needed.

“We are in the beginning phases and are putting enough money into the facility to have the upgrades last 15 to 20 years,” she added.

Dalton said property owner Dennis Anderson “wanted it run correctly, to be a nice place for good people to go to train racehorses.”

The facility has approximately 275 stalls, a three-quarter mile dirt track and a turf oval inside the dirt track.

Three Diamonds will charge $300 per month per stall, Dalton said, and there is a “huge demand” already. “When people found out I was trying to reopen it,” she said, “I started getting calls and we have a long list of people waiting for stalls.”

Owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, Doinitthehardway, a daughter of Street Sense, is a three-start maiden who has a pair of seconds and a third on her resume.
