Bernard Hettel Named 2022 Pete Pedersen ‘Outstanding Steward’ Award Winner

The Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP) has announced the winner of the 2022 Pete Pedersen Award, which is presented to stewards who have demonstrated professional excellence, integrity, and benevolent consideration in the performance of their duties. Contributions of time and expertise to the horse racing industry on the local and national levels are also significant factors in the selection of Pedersen award winners.

The award is named in honor of Pete Pedersen, the nationally recognized California steward and accomplished journalist who set a standard of excellence to which all stewards should aspire. This year's recipient will be recognized at the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program's Global Symposium on Racing and Gaming Awards Luncheon in Tucson, Arizona on Dec. 6, 2022.

Bernard J. “Bernie” Hettel

Hettel has a long history at the track going back to the 1970's when he worked at Churchill Downs as an assistant Identifier. He has been a steward for more than 40 years, working at numerous racetracks in five states. Hettel also served as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Racing Commission and the Executive Secretary of the Virginia Racing Commission.

He is described by those who know him and have worked with him, as professional, knowledgeable, fair and consistent in the enforcement of racing rules and regulations with complete dedication to preserving, protecting and defending the integrity of the horse racing industry. Bernie was accredited by ROAP in 1992.

The Pete Pedersen Award special selection committee is composed of five members: Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day; former The Jockey Club steward and NYRA track veterinarian Dr. Ted Hill; Dan Metzger, TOBA president; Scott Wells, former president of Remington Park and Lone Star Park; and former leading trainer and ROAP accredited steward Hal Wiggins.

Pete Pedersen, for whom the award is named, worked as a steward in California for 50 years before retiring at the age of 85 in 2005. The Seattle native became the second steward to receive the Eclipse Award of Merit in 2002. He was also the recipient of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award in 2008 for serving the racing industry with integrity, dedication, determination, and distinction. Pedersen worked at nearly every track on the West Coast, and his reputation for objectivity and kindness was widely known.

***ROAP, which receives primary funding from The Jockey Club and is based in its Kentucky office, is a 501(c)(6) organization whose board of directors is made up of representatives from 15 industry organizations and 10 at-large representatives. Stewards and judges receive their accreditation and continuing education credits through this program. The website address for ROAP is www.horseracingofficials.com.

Old Friends Welcomes Belmont Stakes Winner Ruler On Ice

Ruler On Ice, the 2011 Belmont Stakes winner, has been pensioned to Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, Ky.

The now 14-year-old gelding arrived Dec. 5.

Ruler On Ice is the fourth Belmont Stakes (G1) winner and seventh overall Classic winner to be retired to Old Friends. The others were Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) winners Silver Charm (1997), Charismatic (1999), and War Emblem (2002), along with Belmont Stakes winners Touch Gold (1997), Sarava (2002), and Birdstone (2004).

Bred by Liberation Farm and Brandywine Farm, Ruler On Ice was trained by Kelly Breen and raced by owners George and Lori Hall.

A son of Roman Ruler–Champagne Glow, by Saratoga Six, Ruler On Ice had his biggest win in 2011 when he upset the field to win the Belmont Stakes as a 24-1 long shot. That same year he finished second in the Pennsylvania Derby (G2), and third in both the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1), and the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

In all, Ruler On Ice raced 16 more times after his Belmont Stakes win, but only won once more, an allowance optional claiming race at Aqueduct on Jan. 30, 2013. His final career race was a fifth-place finish in the Mountainview Handicap (Listed) on May 31, 2014 at Penn National.

Following that race Roman Ruler retired with four wins, five seconds, three thirds, and $1,709,566 in earnings in 23 career starts.

In the press at the time of his retirement, Breen noted that Ruler On Ice retired sound, but that “he and the Halls didn't feel the horse could be competitive at the graded-stakes level anymore.”

“He just didn't have it,” Breen said.

Since his retirement, Ruler On Ice has been residing at the Hall's farm in Versailles, Ky.

“Ruler On Ice won when the spotlight was the brightest, and I know he'll light up the faces of his fans now that he's joining our three other Belmont Stakes winners,” said Old Friends Founder and President Michael Blowen. “Thanks so much to George and Lori Hall for allowing us to enjoy his company.”

Keeneland has cataloged 1,509 horses–broodmares and broodmare prospects, yearlings and horses of racing age as well as stallions and stallion prospects–for the 66th January Horses of All Ages Sale, which will cover four sessions from Jan. 9-12, 2023.

The January Sale catalog now is available online at Keeneland.com. Print catalogs are scheduled to arrive in the mail the week of Dec. 19.

“Because the January Sale is held at the crossroads of racing and breeding seasons, the auction is a terrific opportunity for horsemen to plan for the future, whether they are breeders who seek broodmares and broodmare prospects for the coming breeding season or owners and trainers focused on the track who want to obtain newly turned yearlings and horses of racing age,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said.

Denali Stud, agent, will handle 54 horses cataloged in the Dispersal of successful New York breeder Patricia Generazio. Among them are stakes winner Mischievous Dream (Into Mischief) along with Pure Bode (Bodemeister) and Marquet Legacy (Gio Ponti), who are all cataloged as racing or broodmare prospects.

The entire January Sale will be livestreamed at Keeneland.com and will be aired on the FanDuel Plus App. Scott Hazelton will report periodically on the first two sessions on FanDuel TV.
