Merryman Wins John Deere Award

Edited Press Release

Elizabeth M. Merryman, who bred Caravel (Mizzen Mast), winner of the $1-million GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Keeneland Race Course, has been named the 2022 recipient of the John Deere Award, in recognition of the breeders who participated this year in the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In and in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

The John Deere Award, presented by Breeders' Cup Limited and NTRA Advantage, emphasizes the contributions of breeders to the Breeders' Cup program. The industry's breeders and nominators provide funding for the purses of the World Championships through the annual nominations of foals and stallions.

NTRA Advantage and John Deere will award a John Deere TS Gator Utility Vehicle to Ms. Merryman.

This year's John Deere Award winner was determined by a drawing from all breeders who won either a Breeders' Cup World Championships race or a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

“We congratulate Ms. Merryman on being this year's recipient of the John Deere Award in recognition of Caravel's outstanding victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “The John Deere Award is a tribute to the importance of the breeders in our sport and whose annual contributions have been the backbone of our funding for the Breeders' Cup racing programs and the World Championships. We also thank John Deere and NTRA Advantage for their sponsorship of this award and their salute to the breeding industry.”

“I am very happy to accept the John Deere Award on behalf of Caravel in honor of her thrilling win in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, and in recognition of all breeders who participated in the World Championships,” said Merryman.

Hall Of Famer D. Wayne Lukas Fractures Five Ribs In Stable Pony Incident

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, 87, suffered five fractured ribs when he was unseated from his stable pony at Oaklawn Park this week, reports the Daily Racing Form.

“I got bucked off, fractured five ribs in my back,” Lukas told DRF. “It wasn't pretty. I only made it seven seconds. I don't think I made the full eight. The judges gave me no points. I don't think I'll make the National Finals.”

Lukas has a 40-horse stable based at the Hot Springs racetrack in Arkansas, including current standout Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath. She will make her next start in 2023 as a 4-year-old in the Grade 2, $350,000 Azeri on March 11, with long-range plans to target the Grade 1, $1 million Apple Blossom on April 15.

Speightster’s Count de Monet Upsets Tyler’s Tribe In Advent S.

Two-for-two at Horseshoe Indianapolis earlier this summer, Count de Monet didn't receive a lot of respect at the tote board, going off for his stakes debut at Oaklawn at 15-1. Despite wanting a similar front-running position as Tyler's Tribe, Count de Monet was outrun to the lead by that rival and boxed in against the fence by Too Much Info (Maclean's Music). Still covered up around the turn as Tyler's Tribe paced the field through opening fractions of :22.33 and :46.11, Count de Monet began to make up ground when angled out for the stretch drive. As the pacesetter grew weary with a furlong to run, he overtook the lead with an outside move and drove clear for the comfortable score in Oaklawn's opening day feature. The winner has a weanling half-sister by Exaggerator named Ravenex and his dam was bred back to Echo Town for a 2023 foal. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
