Japan: Bolt D’Oro Colt From Dusk Among 19 Hopefuls In Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity

It's the turn of the 2-year-old colts this coming Sunday (December 18), when the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes will be run at Hanshin Racecourse, the final big race of the year at the Kansai track.

There are 19 nominations for this year's race, which will have a maximum 18 runner field.

Just three first favorites have won the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes in the last ten years, with Salios being the last one to win in 2019. Horses trained at the Miho training center have won five times in the past decade, and foreign jockeys have also won five times in that same time span, with three victories going to Mirco Demuro. Record time for the race is 1:32.3 seconds set by Grenadier Guards in 2020. This year's winner's check is JPY70 million (approximately US$520,000).

This week's big race will be Race 11 on the Sunday card at Hanshin, with a post time of 15.40 in Japan.

Here's a look at some of this year's 2-year-old colts taking on the race:

Danon Touchdown: There's a lot to like about the half-brother to Danon the Kid, and trainer Takayuki Yasuda will be doing his utmost to bring out the best in the JPY264 million (US$1.95 million) purchase at the 2021 Select Sale. The colt won on his debut at Chukyo in October, and finished second in his only other race, the Grade 2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes, run over the course and distance of this Sunday's race.

Trainer Takayuki Yasuda said: “He's been showing a good turn of foot at the finish in his training.”

All Parfait: The colt by Real Steel is two wins from three starts, and is coming off a win in the Grade 2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes over the mile at Hanshin in November.

Jockey Takuya Ono has ridden the horse in all his races and commented on the horse: “He's coming along nicely, but he has to transport over to the track, so I don't want to overdo things with him. He found a good rhythm in the race last time after starting from a wide gate, and was strong in the finish.”

Obamburumai: Trainer Keiji Yoshimura is looking for just his second JRA Grade 1 win and the colt by Discreet Cat looks to have a good chance to help him achieve that. Unbeaten in two starts, he caused a bit of an upset last time, when going off the tenth favorite and winning the Grade 2 Keio Hai Nisai Stakes at Tokyo in November. On the woodchip course at Ritto last week, working with two other horses, he posted a six furlong time of 83.1 seconds, with a final furlong time of 11.7 seconds. No stranger to Grade 1 wins, Christophe Lemaire will ride Obamburumai this Sunday.

Dolce More: The colt by Rulership is another that comes to the race unbeaten and was last seen winning the Grade 3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup over a mile at Tokyo in October.

Trainer Naosuke Sugai said: “He doesn't really stand out in training, but his times are certainly good enough. He experienced racing right-handed at Sapporo and he's fine racing among other horses, even though last time he ran in second throughout the race.”

Ryusei Sakai has been booked to ride the colt for the first time.

Labeling: The British bred colt by Frankel has just had the one start, but he won a maiden race in good style at Tokyo over a mile in November, chalking up a final three furlong time in that race of 33.1 seconds.

Trainer Yuichi Shikato commented on the prospects of Labeling: “There hasn't been long between races, but he's in very good shape. He ran a good race last time, and with the ability he seems to have, I'll look forward to things from now.”

Corpus Christi: Trained by Mitsumasa Nakauchida, the colt by Epiphaneia is also unbeaten in two starts, and is coming off a win at Hanshin over 1,400 meters in November. With jockey Yuga Kawada booked for Danon Touchdown, visiting jockey David Egan has the ride on Corpus Christi.

Assistant trainer Taku Fukunaga said: “Since returning from the farm, the horse seems nice and relaxed, and we hope he'll be in best condition going into the race.”

Trainer Nakauchida took out last Sunday's Grade 1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies with Liberty Island, and he won this race in 2020 with Grenadier Guards, who holds the record time for the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. The trainer has such a good record at the track, and so there's every chance he can claim another JRA Grade 1 victory this week too.

From Dusk: The American bred colt by Bolt d'Oro finished second last time to Obamburumai in the Grade 2 Keio Hai Nisai Stakes over 1,400 meters at Tokyo in November, and will be looking to stay an extra furlong for the first time in this next race. It was Yutaka Take who won last year's Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes on Do Deuce, and he has been booked to ride From Dusk.

Turf Paradise Will Add Races To Cards Through Dec. 22 After Multiple Weather-Related Cancellations

A total of five cards at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Ariz., have been cancelled this month due to poor track conditions caused by rainy weather.

The issues began on Dec. 3, when racing was cancelled after the first race. Racing was again cancelled on Dec. 5, 6, and 7, then again on Dec. 12.

“It does not mix with water,” Gessman told HRN. “And when it gets wet, it's very greasy and slippery.”

A notice on Turf Paradise's website states that to make up for those cancellations, the track will be adding additional races from Saturday, Dec. 10, through Thursday, Dec. 22 (With the exception of Saturday, Dec. 17). As a result of the additional races, post times will be moved up on those dates.

Mandaloun Picks Up Torch for Juddmonte USA

Representing a Juddmonte pedigree through and through, Mandaloun (Into Mischief – Brooch, by Empire Maker) carried Prince Khalid bin Abdullah's esteemed green, pink and white silks at the highest level of the sport during his racing career. A 'TDN Rising Star' on debut and the promoted 2021 Kentucky Derby winner, the homebred has returned to his birthplace at Juddmonte's American division to begin his stud career.

“For Juddmonte to bring in a horse like Mandaloun is very special,” said Aaron West, who joined Juddmonte USA this fall as Nominations Manager. “He was born and raised at the farm and got his early lessons here. Mandaloun reflects 40 years of work, and while there have been plenty of other horses along the way, to have a Classic-winning homebred here has always been the dream for Juddmonte.”

Seven years after Prince Khalid purchased his operation's American division in 1982, Juddmonte bought Queen of Song (His Majesty) for $700,000 in foal to Seattle Slew at the Keeneland November Sale. The Grade II winner was a full-sister to dirt Grade I winner and Classic sire Cormorant.

Queen of Song's stakes-placed daughter Aspiring Diva (Distant View) produced three stakes winners by Juddmonte sire Dansili (GB) in Irish Highweight Emulous (GB), Group victor First Sitting (GB), and Daring Diva (GB), the dam of blacktype winners Caponata (Selkirk) and Brooch (Empire Maker).

Trained by Dermot Weld, Brooch debuted at three and was undefeated in her first four starts including the G2 Lanwades Stud S. as a 4-year-old. Retired to stud back in Kentucky, Brooch produced Mandaloun as her second foal.

West reflected on Mandaloun's storied female family and said, “His pedigree is unique for us in that it's 11 generations of blacktype horses. In the first four generations on his female side, it's a Juddmonte mare to a Juddmonte stallion. It's a Classic dirt pedigree from the fourth generation all the way through now to Mandaloun.”

Making his juvenile debut going six furlongs for Brad Cox at Keeneland's fall meet, Mandaloun came from near the back of an 11-horse field to fight his way to a half-length victory and earn the 'Rising Star' nod. The next three finishers included future Grade III victor Bob's Edge (Competitive Edge) and 2021 GI Cigar Mile H. winner Americanrevolution (Constitution).

West points to that promising debut, as well as the GI Kentucky Derby and the GI Haskell–both of which Mandaloun was elevated to first place–as the colt's three most impressive races.

“You go down the list of the horses that finished behind him in the Derby–Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, Midnight Bourbon–it's a who's who of that 3-year-old crop,” West said. “Then he came back in the Haskell to be right there and beat that same group again.”

Mandaloun's resume also includes the GII Risen Star S. and the Pegasus S. at three, plus the GIII Louisiana S. at four.

“He has always been the same horse that we have here today,” West said. “He was very sound throughout his career and is a classy individual with a good mind. He is easy to be around and always does his job. When you see foals like that and you start training them, you hope they turn out to be a horse like Mandaloun.”

Mandaloun will stand for an introductory fee of $25,000. He is one of four sons of leading sire Into Mischief to enter stud this year and is the only incoming stallion in Kentucky out of a mare by Juddmonte homebred Empire Maker, who passed away nearly three years ago. When Mandaloun got his first graded score in the GII Risen Star, he became the 24th graded winner out of a daughter of the influential stallion.

The Into Mischief-Empire Maker cross has produced four additional stakes winners including Laurel River, another Juddmonte homebred who won the GII Pat O'Brien S. this year, and Grade III victor Center Aisle.

West said that Mandaloun reflects the best of both sides of his pedigree.

“He brings out the power and strength of Into Mischief with the elegance, stretch and scope of Empire Maker. He had the precocity and the ability to show speed and win early, as he did at six and seven furlongs, but then also stretch out and carry that speed a route of ground. He's a perfect blend of the two [stallions] and I think that has been the biggest selling point for breeders.”

Juddmonte has a roster of five stallions led by champion Frankel (GB) at Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, but Mandaloun will stand as the operation's lone representative in its stud barn in Kentucky for 2023.

Following a time of great loss for Juddmonte's American division after the death of Arrogate in 2020, but then an immeasurable loss for the Juddmonte dynasty in its entirety with the passing of Prince Khalid last year, Mandaloun represents the legacy of the many accomplished generations to go before him, as well as the next chapter in a renowned international operation's history, as he picks up the torch for Juddmonte USA.

Parx Leading Rider Ruben Silvera Celebrates 1,000th Win

Jockey Ruben Silvera rode the 1,000th winner of his career at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Penn., on Tuesday. Silvera rode Angelus Warrior to the milestone victory in the 6th race for trainer Jamie Ness and owners Madison Avenue Racing Stable Inc. & Jagger Inc.

The Panama native is currently leading the Parx jockey standings by a healthy margin of 30 victories, according to Equibase.

Though he has not won quite as many races this year (175 thus far) as he did in 2021 (225), Silvera has posted his best-ever year by earnings with a total of $5,932,361 through Monday's card.

A contemporary of Luis Saez in Panama where they attended the country's jockey school, Silvera rode his first U.S. race at Gulfstream Park, finishing fourth with Great Bear March 24, 2011. He picked up his first winner aboard Power Rules on May 7, 2011, at Calder Race Course.

Equibase statistics show Silvera with 1,000 wins and over $30 million in purse earnings from just over 6,700 career mounts.
