Churchill Downs Releases Official Logo For Kentucky Derby 149

Churchill Downs Racetrack has unveiled the official logo for the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, and the event mark pays homage to a notable anniversary and salutes the victors of one of the most incredibly testing and rare feats in all of sports.

Highlighted by the Kentucky Derby's iconic color palette of red, black, gold and white, the Kentucky Derby 149 logo features diamonds intended to replicate the blocks in legendary Secretariat's famed blue and white silks as 2023 will be the 50th anniversary of his unforgettable Triple Crown sweep. Meanwhile, the specific number of 13 diamonds is reverence to the number of Thoroughbreds that won all three races in the Triple Crown.

The diamonds are set within a Coat of Arms shield that projects the achievements, heritage, longevity and stability of the Kentucky Derby, which dates back to 1875.

The logo, designed by New York-based marketing agency SME, will be used on a wide variety of Kentucky Derby merchandise, including apparel for the whole family, the iconic silver Mint Julep cups, glassware, jewelry and other collectibles and gift items. Women's and men's T-shirts featuring the logo are available now at www.KentuckyDerbyStore.com. Additional official merchandise also will be available online, at Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, the Kentucky Derby Museum Gift Shop and other retail outlets.

Reigning champion trainer Charlie Appleby saddled his 1,000th British winner, Glory Lily (GB) (Shamardal), at Lingfield on Wednesday. The Godolphin conditioner sent out his first winner just nine years ago in July of 2013. He recently secured his second consecutive trainers' championship on the back of taking his first G1 2000 Guineas with Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). “It is a great achievement for everybody at Godolphin to ring up the 1,000 in such a short time,” said Appleby. “I am proud to be a part of that and I am forever indebted to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for appointing me to the job as a Godolphin trainer.

British Columbia Duo Lead Canada’s Freshman Sire List In 2023

Confirmation that British Columbia stallions Counterforce and Ralis have been recognized as leading sires in the entire country of Canada coincides with other inspiring news at several levels for the province's racing industry.

Standing at Road's End Farm in Abbotsford, B.C., Counterforce has been declared 2022 leading freshman sire in Canada and leading juvenile sire in British Columbia with a first-crop total of 13 foals including four winners and two black type winners. Stakes winner Air Force was the progeny earnings leading earner at $57,089 with total earnings credited to Counterforce of $137,792.

Ralis who had been standing at Canmore Farms in Aldergrove, B.C., before being leased to Jim Alendal in Chilliwack, had a first-crop total of nine foals with stakes-placed Above Average having earnings of $24,532 and full earnings totaling $81,154.

Counterforce and Ralis finishing one-two as leading sires nationally came on the heels of notification from the BC Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB) that 47 race days at Hastings Racecourse have been approved for the 2023 season.

“All of our people are enthusiastic and engaged,” said David Milburn, president of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of BC. “We're moving in the right direction. We've been through some difficult times with the pandemic but we're coming back with lots of energy from everyone involved.”

Milburn made the comments following an all-day gathering of management from the various sectors of the BC racing industry. The seminar was sponsored by TBC Teletheatre and included members of the HBPA-BC, BCTOBA, CTHS-BC, BC Racebook, Harness Racing BC, as well as management from both Hastings Racecourse and Fraser Downs.

The attendees were pleased that the 2023 dates at Hastings Racecourse will include the return of popular Friday Night racing on four occasions as well as two Monday night dates during the annual PNE Fair.

“Evening racing draws a different kind of crowd,” Milburn says. “I don't know of any other racetrack with a 15-minute drive from the downtown area. I also don't know of any other racetrack with a setting that includes a backdrop of mountains and the ocean. Night racing at Hastings brings a new brand of people to see what we have to offer.”

Friday night dates are scheduled with 7 p.m. start times on July 28, Aug. 4, 11 and 18. The two Monday night cards are set for Aug. 21 and Aug. 28.

Opening day at Hastings Racecourse is Sunday, April 30 with the 2023 meet wrapping up on Sunday, Oct. 15 with all afternoon starts at 2 p.m.

Nichelle Milner, Regional Manager of Racing Operations at Hastings, confirmed the track set-up date will be Friday, Jan. 20 with move-in day scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 22. Training begins Tuesday, Jan. 24.
