Fair Grounds Turf Racing Scheduled To Resume On Limited Basis Dec. 26

Turf racing is scheduled to return to Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans, La., for the “Road to the Derby Kickoff Day” card, to be held on Monday, Dec. 26.

With the portable rail set at 34 feet, fields will be limited to eight runners for the $100,000 Blushing KD and the $100,000 Buddy Diliberto Memorial. With the same parameters, turf racing will again be conducted on Dec. 31 with the runnings of the $100,000 Pago Hop and the $100,000 Woodchopper.

Racing over the Stall-Wilson turf course was put on hold early in the meet that opened Nov. 18 because of damage to the inner portion of the oval from the annual Jazz and Heritage Festival, which was followed by unusually rainy weather and then a drought. Similar problems occurred during the 2012-'13 racing season at Fair Grounds, leading to numerous races being taken off turf, sometimes several days after rains hit the area.

“Going forward from there, we will monitor the condition of the course and run a limited number of turf races as the course allows,” said executive director of racing Gary Palmisano, Jr. “If all goes well, as is expected, the racing office will look to add turf races to the new condition book, which starts Jan. 5.”

Frank Brothers To Retire

Frank Brothers will retire from his roles as a bloodstock agent and a member of Keeneland's yearling inspection team, he announced Friday morning in a press release. “I'm fortunate that my health is good,” he said. “I'm 76 years old and quite content to take a seat in the viewing area and watch the game for a while.”

After training horses from 1980 to 2009, Brothers moved into his current role of selecting horses for a few clients before ultimately partnering with Starlight and StarLadies Racing for the past 13 years. During this time, he has also served as a member of the Keeneland Yearling Inspection Team for the Keeneland September Sale.

“It's just time for me to move on. For a little guy, the training game was very good to me but it was time for me to make that transition back in 2009,” said Brothers, who won 2,291 races over the course of his career. His best horse, Hansel, was a multiple Grade I winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and the 1991 3-year-old champion. Others in his barn included Grade I winners Secret Hello, Arch, Oath, Madcap Escapade, First Samurai, and the multiple graded stakes winner Pulpit.

“I was fortunate to have trained horses for some great people and then equally fortunate when Jack and Laurie Wolf asked me to join their team as bloodstock agent when I retired from training,” he said. “We've had a great deal of luck together—you'd always like to win more, but we did pretty good.” For Starlight Racing, Brothers recommended the purchase of Grade I winner Shanghai Bobby, the 2012 Champion 2-year-old, along with graded stakes winners Algorithms, Eskenformoney, Neolithic, Cutting Humor, and Jouster, among others.

Brothers was also on the Starlight Racing/SF Racing team that selected several graded stakes winners, including Grade I winners Charlatan, Eight Rings, and 2020 Kentucky Derby winner Authentic.

“Frankie's the best and we're going to miss him,” said Jack Wolf, Starlight's managing partner. “He feels like family to us at this point. But I respect his decision to retire and I can't blame him—it's a tough game.”

Canterbury Park Approved For 54-Day Mixed Meet In 2023; $220,000 In Daily Purses

Canterbury Park's request for a 54-day 2023 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing season, Saturday, May 27, through Saturday, Sept. 16, was unanimously approved Thursday by the Minnesota Racing Commission. Four days of racing per week will be conducted at the Shakopee, Minn., track from July 12 through Aug. 20 with racing on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. CT and Sunday at 1 p.m. Three-day weeks will begin and end the season with Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday racing. Racing will also be conducted on three Mondays: Memorial Day, July 3, and Labor Day.

The 54-day season and an average daily purse distribution of $220,000 including both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse purses were agreed upon by track management and the Minnesota HBPA which represents Thoroughbred racehorse owners and trainers.

For 2022, the racing commission approved a 65-day meeting that projected average daily purses exceeding $230,000.

“In 2023 we have a schedule that I am confident will be successful based on available purse money and race-ready horses that will be at Canterbury throughout the summer season,” Canterbury Park CEO Randy Sampson said.

“Canterbury Park and the Minnesota HBPA have worked successfully during challenging times to create a racing program that provides opportunities to horse owners and breeders while also becoming increasingly popular with the wagering public,” Sampson said. “We are investing significant dollars in our racing infrastructure including new barns, dormitories to house staff and safety enhancements as we plan for the future of horse racing in Minnesota.”

A new 100-stall barn is under construction while nine smaller barns built in 1985 are scheduled for demolition as the result of a land sale making way for an outdoor amphitheater. Other improvements include a reconfiguring of the training track, construction of a 34-room dormitory and complete replacement of main track and paddock lighting.

The 2023 stakes schedule along with the first condition book will be available in early January. Stall applications will be available in March and are due April 13. The stable area will open for arrivals May 5 with training on the main track and training track beginning May 8.

The Minnesota Racing Commission is a nine-member panel appointed by the state's governor tasked with overseeing the integrity and safety of horse racing at Minnesota's two pari-mutuel racetracks.

Canterbury Park's 24/7 card casino and simulcast racebook remain open daily. For more information, visit www.canterburypark.com. Complete race dates can be found here.
