Panamanian Angel Morales Rides First U.S. Winner At Gulfstream

Angel Morales, a 19-year-old native of Panama, rode his first winner in the U.S. Friday when he won Gulfstream Park's ninth race aboard Sheza Happy Girl.

Racing third between horses down the backstretch and around the turn of the seven-furlong claiming event, Morales and Sheza Happy Girl took the lead down the stretch and held off Your Inheritance and jockey Jose Ortiz.

“It feels great,” said Morales. “I am very happy.”

Morales, who rode four winners in Panama, came to the U.S. three months ago and has been working in the mornings for trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Sheza Happy Girl, who went off 17-1, was the 11th mount for Morales in the U.S.

Double Pick 6 Carryover Of $84,991 Saturday At Aqueduct

Saturday's 10-race card at Aqueduct Racetrack will feature a double Pick 6 carryover of $84,991 after the multi-race wager went unsolved for the second consecutive day on Friday's nine-race program.

The $1 Pick 6 returned $1,263.50 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

The sequence began in Race 4 with the Peter Chin-trained Acalteque [No. 3, $33.20] scoring a $10,000 claiming win to give apprentice rider Erick Fuentes his first career victory. Stakes-placed Silver Skillet [No. 2, $4.30*] then graduated in Race 5, a one-mile state-bred maiden special weight, for conditioner Christophe Clement under Manny Franco.

Shinfull [No. 9, $7.60] broke her maiden under Kendrick Carmouche in a 6 1/2-furlong state-bred sprint for trainer Rick Schosberg in Race 6, one race before Lord Gatling [No. 4, $38.20] provided the largest upset of the sequence under Romero Maragh for trainer Edmund Pringle in Race 7.

Trainer Timothy Hills took the day's featured Race 8, a one-mile allowance optional claimer, with the Jason Huayas-piloted Sweet Surprise [No. 8, $10.80]. With just three horses uncovered in the final leg, Honest Banker [No. 1A, $33.20] drew away down the stretch under Jorge Vargas, Jr. in Race 9 to score a debut victory for trainer Rob Atras and trigger the carryover.

Saturday's Pick 6 sequence begins in Race 5 [1:42 p.m. Eastern] and features the $500,000 NYSSS Fifth Avenue in Race 7, the $100,000 Alex M. Robb in Race 8 and the $500,000 NYSSS Great White Way in Race 9. First post is 11:50 a.m.

QUICKSTEP (FR) (f, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}–Dance Toupie {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) was well away from the inside stall to race in a handy third after the opening quarter of this debutantes' heat. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight and sent with 300 metres remaining, the even-money pick took a slender advantage into the final furlong and kept on powerfully under whipless coaxing in the closing stages to defeat Sunlike (Fr) (De Treville {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Quickstep is the seventh of eight foals and sixth scorer from as many runners produced by a half-sister to four black-type performers out of G3 Prix d'Arenberg victrix and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Toupie (GB) (Intikhab). The May-foaled dark bay, who joined the Godolphin fold for 350,000gns from the Haras d'Etreham draft at the Tattersalls October Sale Book 2, is a full-sister to G3 Prix Daphnis second Dave (Fr) and a half to GIII Daytona S. third Commander (Fr) (War Command) and a weanling filly by Persian King (Ire). The latter was purchased by Bobby Flay for €65,000 out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale earlier this month. Sales history: €120,000 Wlg '20 ARQDEC; 350,000gns Ylg '21 TATOCT.
