‘He’s Developed Into A Really Nice Horse’: Havnameltdown Keeps Cool For Bob Hope Triumph

Odds-on favorite Havnameltdown walked his beat Sunday at Del Mar in the $100,000 Bob Hope Stakes (G3) and came away a 1 1/4-length winner over stablemate Newgate in the feature for 2-year-olds going seven furlongs at Del Mar.

The husky colt by the Florida sire Uncaptured continued his fine performances at the seaside oval as he registered his third win in four starts at the shore this year. Two of those victories were stakes and his only loss was a second-place finish to stablemate Cave Rock in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) Sept. 11 in his previous start.

Forced out early by rank stablemate and early pacesetter Hard to Figure, Havnameltdown rated in third under Juan Hernandez through the opening quarter in :22:23. He sprinted up to take command while clocking the half mile in :44.36, held a short lead around the turn, then drove to victory under right-handed urging.

Havnameltdown, who returned $3.80, is owned by the trio of Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who also sent out runner-up Newgate as well as Hard to Figure.

Havnameltdown ran the seven panels in 1:21.68 on a track rated as fast. The stakes victory was Baffert's 154th at Del Mar, adding to his record total that has him 69 winners ahead of his next closest pursuer.

Practical Move, finished third, another 2 1/2 lengths behind Newgate. Hard to Figure tired and faded to finish last in five-horse field.

The winner picked up a check for $60,000 for his efforts and increased his earnings to $288,000.

Bred in Florid by Katherine S. Devall, Havnameltown is out of the Put It Back mare Ashley's Babe. He was a $200,000 purchase at the OBS April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where Blaz Perez Stable consigned after buying him for $16,000 at the 2021 OBS October Yearling Sale.

BOB HOPE STAKES QUOTES

JUAN HERNANDEZ (Havnmeltdown, winner) – “He broke nice and easy today. Before in his races he was slingshotting out of there. Today he was more professional. Our other horse (trainer Baffert's Hard to Figure) inside of us on the rail was trying to get out into us, but my horse took it well. He's learning how to run. After we cleared that other horse, I had a nice trip from there.”

BOB BAFERT'S ASSISTANT TRAINER JIMMY BARNES (Havnameltdown, winner) – “He broke well and sat just off them there. Newgate was in a position where he had a good chance, and they both finished together down the stretch so we couldn't be happier. He's (Havnameltdown) developed into a really nice horse and he likes it here at Del Mar.”

Del Mar’s Fall Turf Festival Attracts Some Big Name Trainers, Shippers

The eight races that make up this year's Fall Turf Festival at Del Mar are beginning to take shape and the potential group of East Coast and Midwest invaders make up an impressive lineup. The first race, the G3 Red Carpet, was drawn Saturday and will be run on Thanksgiving Day.

The G2 Hollywood Turf Cup is scheduled for Friday. It's attracted the attention of several top-name trainers who have nominated horses for the 12-furlong turf event.

Trainer Bill Mott has nominated Mooney Love. Christophe Clement is considering shipping Soldier Rising and Brendan Walsh may bring G3 Dowager winner Temple City Terror.

The G2 Seabiscuit, run on Saturday, rounds out the first weekend's portion of the Fall Turf Festival. The out-of-towners nominated for the race include G1 Arlington Million winner Santin from the Brendan Walsh barn; Brad Cox' Set Piece; Christophe Clement's City Man; Victoria Oliver's Kentucky Ghost, and Wootton Asset from the Graham Motion barn.

Del Mar Racing Secretary David Jerkens said it's nice to see the pre-Covid interest in the Fall Turf Festival from so many out-of-town trainers.

“From what we've seen in the Turf Cup and the Seabiscuit, it looks like we're on par with most years in terms of out-of-town interest,” Jerkens said.

The Fall Turf Festival offers something that's hard to come by this time of year in horse racing, graded stakes turf racing.

“Where the races are located and the time frame,” Jerkens said in regards to the appeal of the Festival. “Obviously, at the end of the year turf opportunities back east are limited so it fits a certain time when there's not as much competition. Plus, Grade 1's in early December, there's not too many of them on the turf.”

And Del Mar will feature two elite-level events during the Turf Festival, the Hollywood Derby and the Matriarch.

“That's pretty much where this Turf Festival is designed on the calendar,” Jerkens continued. “It's our good offerings but also a reflection of just a lack of opportunities elsewhere.”

Most of the out-of-town trainers will ship in their horses days before the race.

“Brad Cox is coming to the Seabiscuit with Set Piece and they'll arrive Sunday,” Jerkens said. “Shug McGaughey and Todd Pletcher are looking at the Hollywood Derby and Chad Brown for the Matriarch so we'll have some household names.”

The Fall Turf Festival continues into the closing weekend at Del Mar, featuring no less than five graded stakes on the turf; three on Saturday, December 3 and two more on Sunday, December 4. The Saturday races consist of the G3 Jimmy Durante for 2-year old fillies, the G1 Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds, and the inaugural $100,000 Stormy Liberal turf sprint for 3-year-olds and up.

Then on Sunday, closing day of the Bing Crosby meet, the Fall Turf Festival concludes with the G3 Cecil B. DeMille for 2-year olds and the  Matriarch for fillies and mares.

Post time will be 12:30 p.m. (PT) except on Thanksgiving Day when the racing begins at 11 a.m.

Uncaptured’s Havnameltdown Gives Bob Baffert 1-2 in Bob Hope

Looking to collect his second graded stakes win of the season, Havnameltdown proved he was up to the task with a professional score over stablemate Newgate in Sunday's GIII Bob Hope S. at Del Mar. One of three Baffert trainees in the short five-horse field, Havnameltdown and Hard to Figure (Hard Spun), breaking from the inside two gates, broke cleanly while Practical Move, exiting stall 6, was pinched back as the converging Newgate and Mixto (Good Magic) made their exit. The overly headstrong Hard to Figure proved hard to handle racing out of the chute as Havnameltdown, Practical Move and Newgate all pressed the issue four abreast through a quarter in :22.23. Taking charge heading into the far turn, the favorite carved out a half in :44.36 as the early pacesetter retreated leaving Practical Move and Newgate the only rivals in contention. A length and a half on top turning for home, Havnameltdown continued on with purpose late as Newgate loomed, however, the favorite proved best on the day to score by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. Practical Move finished a clear third.

“He broke nice and easy today,” explained winning rider Juan Hernandez. “Before in his races, he was sling-shotting out of there. Today, he was more professional. Our other horse [trainer Baffert's Hard to Figure] inside of us on the rail was trying to get out into us, but my horse took it well. He's learning how to run. After we cleared that other horse, I had a nice trip from there.”

Marking his debut at last July going five panels at Del Mar, the Florida bred made it two straight with a score in the GIII Best Pal S. at the seaside oval Aug. 14. Stepping into top-level competition for his latest, he finished 5 1/4 lengths behind subsequent Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Cave Rock (Arrogate) in the GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity Sept. 11.

Pedigree Notes:
Former Ocala Stud stallion Uncaptured–relocated to South Korea for the 2020 breeding season–is the sire of Havnameltdown and other 2022 graded winners Yes I Am Free, Willy Boi, and Lightening Larry, as well as two other graded winners. Of Uncaptured's 11 black-type winners total, two–Havnameltdown and additional graded winner Two Sixty–are out of Put It Back mares. The late Put It Back, an Honour and Glory/Relaunch stallion, also originally stood in Florida before his export to Argentina and has 30 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Havnameltdown and Two Sixty have another tie, as they are out of full-sisters. Two Sixty was bought by Stonestreet at last year's Keeneland November sale for $440,000 while in foal to Constitution and had a colt Jan. 23. Havnameltdown's dam, Ashley's Babe, has a yearling colt by Tapiture, who was a $4,500 RNA at Keeneland January, and was bred to Maximus Mischief for 2023. Her fourth dam, Rose Bowl (Habitat), was a champion in England and an excellent broodmare who produced three stakes winners, while her descendants include Canadian champion Strait of Dover (English Channel) and English highweight Iktamal (Danzig Connection).
