Undefeated Hoosier Philly Headlines Saturday’s Golden Rod

Gold Standard Racing's undefeated Hoosier Philly headlines a field of 10 2-year-old fillies that were entered in Saturday's $400,000 Golden Rod (Grade 2) at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile Golden Rod is the next stop on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. The Top 5 finishers of the race will receive points based on a 10-4-3-2-1 scale in their attempt to qualify for the first Friday in May.

The Golden Rod will go as Race 10 of 12 on the special “Stars of Tomorrow II” program that features all 2-year-old races. First post is 1 p.m. (all times Eastern). The other featured events on the card include the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), $200,000 Ed Brown and $200,000 Fern Creek.

Trained by Tom Amoss, Hoosier Philly dominated her six rivals in the $200,000 Rags to Riches by 7 ½ lengths under jockey Edgar Morales. The gray daughter of Into Mischief began to garner the attention of many onlookers during her morning training prior to her debut where she was bet down to even-money favoritism and scored by 1 ¾ lengths in a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight contest. On Nov. 10, Hoosier Philly had her most serious preparation toward the Golden Rod when clipped five furlongs in :58.20 at Churchill Downs. Hoosier Philly and Morales will break from post No. 4.

One of Hoosier Philly's rivals that entered the Golden Rod was Godolphin's Pretty Mischievous. The undefeated daughter of Into Mischief is a perfect 2-for-2 and, like Hoosier Philly, both of her victories come at Churchill Downs. Pretty Mischievous broke her maiden Sept. 18 by 2 ¼ lengths and returned Oct. 30 where she splashed to a 1 ¾-length allowance win over the “sloppy” racetrack. Pretty Mischievous has been well backed in both of her starts. She was the 2-1 favorite in her debut against 11 rivals and was heavily bet to 1-5 against five fillies in her allowance win. Churchill Downs' leading rider Tyler Gaffalione will retain the mount from the rail.

Here is the complete field for the Golden Rod from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Pretty Mischievous (Gaffalione, Walsh);
  2. Mustang Lady (Rafael Bejarano, Troy Newton);
  3. American Rockette (Florent Geroux, Bill Mott);
  4. Hoosier Philly (Morales, Amoss);
  5. Black Forest (Gerardo Corrales, Fausto Gutierrez);
  6. Knockyoursocksoff (Julien Leparoux, Chris Block);
  7. T Max (Jack Gilligan, Will Walden);
  8. Pure Pauline (Ricardo Santana Jr., Todd Pletcher);
  9. Take Charge Briana (Luis Saez, D. Wayne Lukas); and
  10. Defining Purpose (Brian Hernandez Jr., Kenny McPeek).

Curly Jack Returns To Churchill Downs For Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club

Michael McLaughlin's $300,000 Iroquois Stakes (Grade 3) winner Curly Jack headlines a field of nine 2-year-old colts that were entered in Saturday's 96th running of the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2), a “Prep Season” race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Jockey Club, run at 1 1/16 miles, will award the Top 5 finishers points on a 10-4-3-2-1 scale towards a spot in the starting gate for the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

First post Saturday is 1 p.m. and the 12-race program features all 2-year-old races as part of “Stars of Tomorrow II.” The Kentucky Jockey Club will go as Race 11 at 5:56 p.m. (all times Eastern). The card also will include the $400,000 Golden Rod (G2), $200,000 Ed Brown and $200,000 Fern Creek.

Curly Jack began his march on the Road to the Kentucky Derby when he scored a 10-1 upset win in the Sept. 17 Iroquois. The son of Good Magic made his debut at Churchill Downs on June 2 where he drew away to a four-length maiden special weight victory under jockey Colby Hernandez. In his first stakes try, Curly Jack finished fifth, beaten 5 ¾ lengths, in the $175,000 Sanford (G3) at Saratoga. The Tom Amoss trainee returned in the $125,000 Ellis Park Juvenile where he was narrowly defeated by Top Recruit. In his last start, Curly Jack attempted Grade 1 glory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) but finished fifth. Jockey Edgar Morales will be in the irons for the Kentucky Jockey Club and the duo will break from the rail.

Another stakes winner that was entered in the Kentucky Jockey Club is Gatsas Stables, R.A. Hill Stable and Steven Schoenfeld's $120,000 Awad winner Freedom Trail. Trained by John Terranova, who won the 2014 Kentucky Jockey Club with El Kabeir, Freedom Trail has raced exclusively on the turf in his first two starts. He broke his maiden on Sept. 25 during the Belmont meeting at Aqueduct and returned for a three-quarters of a length score in the 1 1/16-mile Awad. The son of Collected will be ridden by Florent Geroux from post No. 6.

Trainer Kenny McPeek has won two of the last four runnings of the Kentucky Jockey Club with Signalman (2018) and Smile Happy (2021). The veteran conditioner entered two colts in this year's contest: Fern Circle Stables and Magdalena Racing's maiden special weight winner Denington and Dixiana Farms' Street Sense (G3) runner-up Hayes Strike. Denington will be ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. from post 3 while Hayes Strike will break from post 7 with Rafael Bejarano.

Other top horses entered the Kentucky Jockey Club include Albaugh Family Stables and Castleton Lyons 5 ¼-length maiden special weight winner Cyclone Mischief and Gold Square's debut winner Instant Coffee.

Here is the complete field for the Kentucky Jockey Club from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Curly Jack (Morales, Amoss);
  2. Western Ghent (Mickaelle Michel, D. Wayne Lukas);
  3. Denington (Hernandez, McPeek);
  4. Gigante (Corey Lanerie, Steve Asmussen);
  5. Red Route One (Tyler Gaffalione, Steve Asmussen);
  6. Freedom Trail (Geroux, Terranova);
  7. Hayes Strike (Bejarano, McPeek);
  8. Instant Coffee (Luis Saez, Cox); and
  9. Cyclone Mischief (Joe Talamo, Dale Romans).

Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' Stars of Tomorrow programs have helped launch the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 Grade 1 winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009); Kentucky Derby winners Super Saver (2010) and Mandaloun (2021); and Longines Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), Monomoy Girl (2018) and Secret Oath (2022).

All of Saturday's action at Churchill Downs will air on FanDuel TV.

Wagering is available for the Stars of Tomorrow II program on www.twinspires.com, the official wagering provider of Churchill Downs Incorporated and the Kentucky Derby.

Pimlico’s Canter For The Causes Raises Over $20,000 For Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

For a record-breaking third year, 300 riders from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond walked, trotted, and cantered their horses across Pimlico Race Couse on October 31st with proceeds to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA). In total, the 2022 Canter for the Cause raised over $20,000 for the TAA— a nonprofit which provides accreditation and grants to Thoroughbred aftercare organizations dedicated to the retraining, retiring, and rehoming of off-track Thoroughbreds.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, this annual event offers equestrians the unique opportunity to walk, trot, or canter around the historic Pimlico Race Course, home of the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. Riders also had the opportunity to take their horses through the starting gate and get their picture taken in the winner's circle.

“Canter For a Cause was a huge success last month at Pimlico,” said Maryland Jockey Club Vice President of Racing Development, Georganne Hale. “Everybody who rode around the historic track had a smile on their face, riders loved getting their picture taken in the winner's circle, and all the proceeds went to an important cause for our industry— the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Maryland Jockey Club for including the TAA as its beneficiary since 2019,” said TAA Operations Consultant, Stacie Clark. “From the riders who continue to attend Canter for the Cause year after year, to those that attended for the very first time, it is your participation that raised over $20,000 for the TAA. Thank you and we'll see you next year.”

About the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Based in Lexington, KY, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding. Along with continued funding from its original partners Breeders' Cup, The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, the TAA is supported by owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, aftercare professionals, and other industry members. Since inception in 2012, the TAA has granted more than $28.1 million to accredited aftercare organizations. Currently 81 aftercare organizations comprised of approximately 180 facilities across North America have been granted accreditation. To learn more about the TAA, visit ThoroughbredAftercare.org.
