Fair Grounds Suspends Turf Racing Until Late December

Fair Grounds, which started its 2022-2023 meet Nov. 18, will not card any races on its Stall-Wilson Turf Course until late December at the earliest, Daily Racing Form reports.

This week, the New Orleans track scrapped plans to have limited racing on the outer portion of the turf course. Track officials said earlier this month the course had been adversely affected by weather-related factors—an extremely rainy period in July and August followed by unusually dry September and October and announced that some problems with the course led to Condition Book 1 revisions that shifted the majority of turf races to the main track.

On Wednesday, Fair Grounds sent a release to horsemen stating “turf racing will be suspended immediately,” the Form reports. Gary Palmisano, Executive Director of Racing for the track's parent company, Churchill Downs Inc., said Thursday morning the decision was made “to halt grass racing until late in December.” He said the course was being managed with the goal of returning it to full use later in the meet, which runs through March 26.

Recent Import Bellestreet Bridie Hits The Ground Running In Del Mar’s Red Carpet In U.S. Debut

Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's recently imported Bellstreet Bridie “came off the plane running” Thursday at Del Mar, laying up close early, then firing through the lane in the $151,500 Red Carpet Stakes (G3), the featured attraction on the Thanksgiving Day card.

The 3-year-old British-bred Sir Percy filly had just shipped in from England earlier this week after a 12-race career in her native land. She ran the Red Carpet's 1 3/8 miles in 2:15.67 on firm turf while finishing 4 1/4 lengths best under jockey Flavien Prat. Her U.S. trainer is Mark Glatt.

Finishing second in the test for fillies and mares was Irish-bred Quattroelle, also owned by the Red Baron/Rancho Temescal connections but trained by Jeff Mullins. Running third was Queen Ofthe Temple. Favorite Sister Otoole was fourth in the eight-horse field.

Bellestreet Bridie picked up a check for $90,000 for her efforts and pushed her earnings mark to $135,316. Her career line stands at 4-4-3 from 13 starts.

Bellestreet Bridie, who was bred by Ashbrittle Stud, paid $10. Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal bought her last month for $311,166 at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale in Newmarket. She was produced by the Medaglia d'Oro mare Mambo Gold, whose dam Mambo Jambo is a full sister to Kentucky-bred two-time European champion filly Divine Proportions.

RED CARPET STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY FLAVIEN PRAT (Bellstreet Bridie, winner) – “I didn't know much about her; it's my understanding she's only been here (from Europe) for a few days. Mark (trainer Glatt) didn't know much either, so we were even. She jumped (broke) well and that made me happy; I was able to put her in the race. Sometimes with the European horses they don't come away from there too well. But she was running all the way and then when it was time she finished up strong.”

TRAINER MARK GLATT (Bellstreet Bridie, winner) – “They did a terrific job with her overseas after we purchased her, keeping her fit, keeping her ready for this race. Really, all my job to do was to keep her happy and as strong as we could after a long ship like that. I'm just pleased to get that kind of start with her after spending a good amount of money on her. We got her Grade 3 placed now.”

‘She Could’ve Easily Went A Mile-And-A-Half Today’: Front-Running Dalika Lands Cardinal

German-bred Dalika scored her third front-running graded stakes win of the year when she rolled to a 1¾-length victory over Perseverancia in the $268,500 Cardinal (G3) on Thanksgiving Day at Churchill Downs.

Dalika, a 6-year-old mare owned by Paul Varga's Bar Mar Equine LLC, ran 1 1/8 miles over firm turf in 1:50.61 to collect the seventh stakes win of her career. Most notably, she determinedly won the Beverly D. Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs in August and followed that with a triumph in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf (G3) in September.

Brian Hernandez Jr. rode the winner for trainer Al Stall Jr.

Breaking from post-position five in the field of nine fillies and mares, Dalika established position from the outset while setting fractions of :24.36 and :49.07 as 8-5 favorite Adventuring rated in second down the backstretch. Curly Ruth attempted to challenge from the outside on the final turn but was quickly dismissed. At the head of the stretch, Dalika had a two-length advantage over the Adventuring as Perseverancia, who rated well back in seventh early on, rallied late in the stretch for the place.

“I've learned from watching (the late former jockey) Miguel (Mena) ride her that you just stay out of her way and she'll give you her best run,” Hernandez said. “She's just a solid filly. I told (owner) Paul (Varga) after the race that she could've easily went a mile-and-a-half today.”

The triumph was worth $148,800 and increased her earnings to $1,441,586. She boasts a record of 10-7-0 in 31 starts.

“Since we got her as a 2-year-old she's been so consistent in her races,” Varga said. “She really likes it over here at Churchill. She's had 31 races in her career, at all distances, and she's given us 10 wins now. She's so tough on the lead. She's actually been a seven-time runner-up. This year particular she's had a tough campaign. Every time it looks like she's going to get passed she stays game.”

Dalika returned of $5.72 for the win as the second betting choice. Perserveranica, ridden by Julien Leparoux, was 1 1/4 lengths in front o third-place finisher Adventuring, under Joel Rosario.

The order of finish was completed by Sunny One, Lake Lucerne, Flippant, Pass the Plate, Curly Ruth, and Disappearing Act. Wave of Goodness was scratched.

Prior to the Cardinal, Dalika finished last of six in the Fall Harvest on the Breeders' Cup undercard Nov. 5 at Keeneland.

“We just threw her last race out at Keeneland in the Fall Harvest,” Hernandez said. “Things didn't go her way that day and that wasn't the Dalika that we know.”

Dalika, a gray or roan daughter of Pastorius out of the Hurricane Run mare Drawn to Run, was bred in Germany by Gestut Ammerland.
