Apprentice Jockey Blanche Tallies First Career Win At Hawthorne

It only took a handful of mounts for apprentice jockey Rishawn Blanche to get his first career victory in the saddle.

On Friday at Hawthorne, Blanche rode favored Kimberly Frances to the win in the fourth race for owners Omar Razvi and Mike Fleischman and trainer Oscar Sanchez.

The 6-year-old Afleet Alex mare was off the early pace, split horses entering the stretch, willingly responded to snatch the lead when called upon, and cruised to a 3 1/2-length win in 1:44.98 for the one-mile and 70-yard contest on a fast track. She returned $3.40.

Following the race, Blanche was greeted by the entire Hawthorne jockey colony.

‘He Has Just Matured And Got Better’: Prince Abama Holds On To Take Hollywood Turf Cup

Michael House's Prince Abama stalked the leader for the first portion of the 12-furlong Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) Friday at Del Mar, took over the lead at the mile marker, then simply outran his six rivals for a three-quarter length win.

The 4-year-old Irish-bred gelding by the Tamayuz earned a first prize of $150,000 for taking the $250,000 feature and pushed his lifetime earnings up to $327,553 with his third victory in his 10th career start.

Prince Abama was ridden by Flavien Prat, who was tallying his fourth winner of the afternoon. The chestnut is trained by Phil D'Amato, who was capturing the race for the second year in a row. He took it last year with the 6-year-old Say the Word.

Finishing second in Friday's affair was The Grey Wizard, who was a head better than third-place finisher Avenue. Favorite Dicey Mo Chara was never a factor in a fourth-place finish.

Prince Abama paid $7.60.

HOLLYWOOD TURF CUP STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY FLAVIEN PRAT (Prince Abama, winner) – “We (he and trainer Phil D'Amato) thought that he was tactical enough that I could put him right in the race. It turned out true. He ran well and finished up like we hoped. In these long races you need a horse that can handle the distance. Our horse could today.”

TRAINER PHIL D'AMATO (Prince Abama, winner) – “Flavien (ride Prat) made the right move at the right time. He sensed that the pace was ultra slow when that three horse was on the lead. He decided at the five-eighths pole, he wanted to be on the lead and that was the winning move. He (Prince Abama) has just matured and got better.”

Leading Maryland Sire Great Notion Gets Stakes Double At Laurel With Offspring Alwaysinahurry, Fille D’Esprit

Mopo Racing's Alwaysinahurry swept to the lead at the top of the stretch and turned back a game effort from One Ten through the lane to earn his second career stakes victory in Friday's $75,000 Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial at Laurel Park.

The seven-furlong Bender for 3-year-olds and up and $75,000 Politely for fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs, both restricted to Maryland-bred/sired horses, served to co-headline the first of back-to-back stakes days over Thanksgiving weekend. The winners of both races, including Politely winner Fille d'Esprit, are by Northview Stallion Station resident and Maryland leading sire Great Notion.

On Saturday, Laurel will serve up three $100,000 stakes – the 1 1/8-mile Richard W. Small for 3-year-olds and up, City of Laurel for 3-year-olds, and Safely Kept for 3-year-old fillies, both going seven furlongs.

Ridden by Angel Cruz for trainer Dale Capuano, Alwaysinahurry ($7.40) completed the distance in 1:12.85 over a fast main track in picking up his fifth lifetime win and second in a stakes following the 2021 Concern at historic Pimlico Race Course.

Bred in Maryland by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowman Quin Bowman and Rebecca Davis, Alwaysinahurry had placed in two subsequent stakes attempts, finishing second in the 2021 Star de Naskra and third in the Oct. 22 Maryland Million Sprint, both at six furlongs.

“We were looking forward to this race, especially after the Maryland Million,” winning trainer Dale Capuano said. “I've been wanting to get him stretched out to a mile eventually. This should be a good steppingstone to see if he can go that far.”

Cruz gave Alwaysinahurry clear run in fourth as Going to the Lead – third in an optional claimer at Laurel four days earlier – and multiple stakes winner Tappin Cat dueled for the early lead through a quarter-mile in 23.36 seconds. Alwaysinahurry ranged up to challenge the leaders rounding the far turn and straightened for home in front as One Ten loomed a threat on the far outside into midstretch.

“When he broke and he was sitting right there, I felt pretty good,” Capuano said. “Those two horses were out there and Angel knows how to ride him. He got him in the clear and pretty much I figured he was going to be tough from the quarter pole to the wire. It worked out excellent.”

Alwaysinahurry finished 1 ½ lengths ahead of One Ten, who was 4 ¼ lengths clear of Going to the Lead in third. It was a nose back to 2021 Maryland Million Classic winner Monday Morning Qb in fourth, followed by Tappin Cat and Antipoison. Thirteen-time stakes winner Whereshetoldmetogo, the 2-1 program favorite, was scratched.

Late longtime owner-breeders Howard and Sondra Bender were fixtures at Maryland racetracks for nearly four decades. Among their more than 500 winners were graded-stakes winners Secret River, Foufa's Warrior, Promenade Girl, Green Darlin, London Lane, and La Reine's Terms.

Fille D'Esprit Cruises To Popular Triumph In Politely

C J I Phoenix Group and No Guts No Glory Farm's Fille d'Esprit continued her remarkable run since being claimed two summers ago, rolling to a commanding 5 ¾-length triumph in the Politely.

Favored at 3-5, Fille d'Esprit ($3.20) gave trainer Jerry Robb his third consecutive win in the Politely, following Anna's Bandit in 2019 and Princess Kokachin in 2021, all with jockey Xavier Perez aboard. The Politely was not run during a pandemic-shortened 2020 stakes schedule.

“She's just incredible. I'm so happy to win this race [a] third time for the main barn,” Perez said. “Today was another one for the books. Everybody knows about what I've been through with her, all the headaches in the morning, but she's just getting better and better.”

Perez settled Fille d'Esprit in third behind 14-1 long shot Targe, who was pressed through a quarter-mile in :22.63 by Paisley Singing. Fille d'Esprit moved up with little urging midway around the far turn, effortlessly cruised to the lead and opened up through the stretch.

Juror Number Four stayed up to be second by a length over Hollywood Walk. Paisley Singing and Targe completed the order of finish. Queen Sheba was scratched.

Robb claimed Fille d'Esprit for $10,000 in August 2020 and she has won 10 of 20 subsequent starts, five of them in stakes, including the Maryland Million Distaff in her previous outing, to top $600,000 in lifetime earnings. Both she and Anna's Bandit are by  Great Notion out of No Armistice mares.

Anna's Bandit won 17 times, 11 in stakes, from 39 starts with $806,655 in purses earned from 2016-2021.

“She means the world,” Perez said. “She's kind of related to Anna's Bandit, so that's big. She's filling those big shoes and doing a good job. If she keeps doing how she's doing, she's going to be the same way Anna was.”

Bred and raced by Mrs. Richard du Pont, Politely won 13 stakes and placed in eight others from age 2 to 5, setting an Atlantic City track record in the 1967 Matchmaker and matching it the following year. Retired following the 1968 season, she won 21 of 49 career starts and was a member of the inaugural Maryland-bred Thoroughbred Hall of Fame Class of 2013.

Bubble Rock Kicks Clear Going Wire To Wire In Mrs. Revere

Bubble Rock broke alertly and led every step of the way to win Friday's 30th running of the $300,000 Mrs. Revere (G2) for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs by 1 ¼ lengths over Joyful Applause.

Owned and bred by John Ed Anthony's Shortleaf Stable Inc., Bubble Rock ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.05 over a firm Matt Winn Turf Course to collect her third stakes win and second against graded company. Joel Rosario rode the winner for trainer Brad Cox and returned two races later guide Proxy to victory in the Clark (G1).

Bubble Rock, who previously won the Matron (G3) at age 2 and Cincinnati Trophy at Turfway Park earlier this year, banked the $177,250 first prize and rewarded her backers with $5.32as the 8-5 betting choice in the field of 10.

She went straight to the front and set moderate fractions of :24.17, :49.26, and 1:13.75 as longshots Joyful Applause and Take a Stand tracked about one length back in second and third, respectively, down the backstretch. Bubble Rock was never seriously threatened into the final turn or in the stretch and the top three finished in the same position nearly all the way around the trip.

“She broke very well from the gate and took me to an easy lead down the stretch,” Rosario said. “She got into a really good rhythm and we weren't going too fast down the backside. I could feel around the turn I still had a lot of horse beneath me and she was able to kick clear in the stretch.”

Joyful Applause, at odds of 34-1 under Edgar Morales, was second, while Take a Stand, ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, was another 1 ½ lengths back in third at 38-1.

Lovely Princess, Quality Star, She's Gone, Lady Puchi, Fancy Martini, California Angel, and Sweet Lady Ivanka completed the order of finish. Have a Good Day was scratched.

The winner's share of the purse pushed Bubble Rock's earnings to $508,793 from a record of 4-2-1 in 10 starts. Prior to the Mrs. Revere, Bubble Rock finished fourth in the Valley View (G3) at Keeneland on Oct. 28.

“We're very proud of her effort today,” Cox said. “She's a filly that we tried multiple distances with, and at the end of a 3-year-old campaign this was a target for us. She's run well at Turfway in the past so we could keep that as a target this winter.”

Bubble Rock is a dark bay or brown daughter of More Than Ready out of the Giant's Causeway mare Reef Point and was bred in Kentucky by her owner.

The Mrs. Revere is named in honor of an accomplished Churchill Downs fan favorite in the mid-1980s. Mrs. Revere won 12 races in 28 starts, finished second seven times and earned $429,545 for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Her six wins in a dozen starts at Churchill Downs included stakes triumphs in the Regret, Dogwood and Edgewood in 1984 and the Kentucky Cardinal in 1985. She was owned by Dr. Hiram Polk and the late Dr. David Richardson, who have provided the winner's trophy for the Mrs. Revere in each year of its existence.
