Grade I winner Defunded, who skipped a shot at the Breeders' Cup, kept it rolling with a popular score in the GIII Native Diver S. Sunday at Del Mar.

A second-out graduate last March at Santa Anita, the gelding was fourth in both the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby and GIII Pat Day Mile S. before running second in the GIII Affirmed S. and GIII Los Alamitos Derby. Scoring a pair of blowout allowance/optional claiming victories, he was a hard-fought runner-up in the GI Hollywood Gold Cup S. May 30, but finished off the board in the GII San Diego H. and GII Pat O'Brien S. here this summer.

Going wire to wire to capture the GI Awesome Again S. last out Oct. 1 in Arcadia, the chestnut was knocked down to odds-on in this spot and broke awkwardly. Soon rushing up to press the pace three wide, Defunded moved into second past a :23.62 quarter and drew alongside the longshot pacesetter through a sharp half in :46.41. Poking his head in front five-sixteenths out, the favorite kicked clear into the lane and bounded away to score as much the best, well ahead of stablemate Azul Coast.

“He came away from there a little bit slow, but I wasn't concerned. This horse doesn't need to be in front,” said winning rider Edwin Maldonado. “He's won from off the pace before. I rode him with confidence all the way. On the [far] turn he wanted to lean on the horse inside us, but I got him going straight and it all worked out from there.”

“Edwin said Defunded was kind of wanting to sit back and when that happens and they sit back when the gate opens, then you're going the wrong way,” added Jimmy Barnes, assistant to winning trainer Bob Baffert. “Luckily they were going slow enough he was able to recover and get back in a good position. He's always had talent. It's just that he's been a little aggressive in the paddock on us at times. But he went through the paddock good, he went to the gate good so maybe we've got him straightened out.”

Pedigree Notes:

One of 22 stakes winners, eight graded stakes winners and three Grade I winners for Darby Dan's Dialed In, Defunded is the third black-type performer out of her four-time stakes-placed dam, a daughter of a SW Wind Tunnel. That mare is a half to GSW Reunited (Dixie Union), who produced MGISW Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}). Bought by the winner's breeder for $37,000 at Keeneland November in 2016, Wind Caper has an unraced 3-year-old Maclean's Music filly, an unraced juvenile Lookin At Lucky filly named Capital Lights and a yearling full-sister to the winner named Ringy Dingy who sold to Oracle Bloodstock for $200,000 at Fasig-Tipton October.

Trademark Draws Away In Off-The-Turf Commonwealth Turf At Churchill Downs

Trademark collared pacesetter Fighter in the Win into the final turn, turned back a challenge from Stolen Base at the top of the stretch, and drew off late to win the off-the-turf $300,000 Commonwealth Turf at Churchill Downs by four lengths.

Sunday's closing day feature was transferred from the turf to the “sloppy” dirt track because of rain in the Louisville area.

Trademark, who scratched out of Friday's Clark (G1) versus elders in favor of this race, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.39 to collect his first career stakes win. Martin Garcia rode the winner for trainer Vicki Oliver.

Longshot Fighter in the Win was the quickest from the gate and set fractions of :23.61 and :47.48 as Trademark tracked about a length behind. Fighter in the Win gave way with three furlongs to run as Trademark dragged Garcia to the front. Stolen Base came within 1 ½ lengths of Trademark leaving the turn for home, but Trademark was much the best in the slog. The rest finished well back.

“This horse does some of his best running when he's outside of horses,” Garcia said. “So, up the backside I kept him out of trouble. Around the turn, you could tell I had a lot of horse left.”

Trademark is a son of Upstart out of the Creative Cause mare Creative Trick and was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones. The four-time winner returned $9.12 as the 7-2 second betting choice in the field of six 3-year-olds. Stolen Base, with Luis Saez up, was second, and Red Danger, ridden by Julien Leparoux, finished 11 ¾ lengths back in third.

Actuator, Fighter in the Win, and Play Action Pass completed the order of finish. Running Bee, Mount Rundle, Ready to Purrform, Portfolio Company and Barberini were scratched.

Trademark netted $183,450 for owner Ann Braxton Lynch's BBN Racing LLC and now boasts career earnings of $463,689 from a record of 4-1-0 in 13 starts.

“I was happy Martin sort of took him off the early pace up the backside,” Oliver said. “We always knew the Commonwealth would be an option, but the Clark was coming up a short field. So, we entered him in both spots to keep our options open.”

Determined Late Run Propels Candy Overload To First Stakes Win In Kennedy Road

Candy Overload was full of run late to notch his first stakes victory in the $203,300 Kennedy Road (G3) for 3-year-olds and up Sunday at Woodbine.

Multiple graded stakes winner Silent Poet skipped out to lead the field of 10 in the six-furlong Tapeta event, with even-money choice Arzak pressing through an opening quarter in :22.41, while late-running Candy Overload was unhurried and settled into ninth spot.

Arzak, a head on top, and Silent Poet continued their upfront battle and took their rivals through a brisk half in :44.85, as Sahin Civaci, aboard Candy Overload, kept the 4-year-old son of Reload running unfettered in eighth place.

The front-end tussle remained through three-quarters, as Candy Overload began to circle rivals to the far outside, setting up a clear path down the lane in an attempt to reel in the leaders.

Silent Poet took over the proceedings at the stretch call, but Ice Chocolat soon arrived on the scene, while Candy Overload continued to gobble up ground, eventually getting the measure of his stablemate, 19-1 Ice Chocolat, to notch a three-quarter length win in a time of 1:09.17. Lucky Score rallied stoutly to finish third. Silent Poet held on for fourth.

Bred in Ontario by Northern Dawn Stables Inc. and Denny Andrews, the bay gelding is trained by Mark Casse for owners Leonard Schleifer, Wachtel Stable, and Gary Barber.

With the win, Candy Overload is now 4-5-1 from 15 career starts.

“Today, the races were playing the speed,” said Civaci. “But I knew we had to come off [the pace], so that was a little bit challenging. I had a good trip overall. I had the outside and when the horse kicked on down the lane, it was clear and he ran good.”

Candy Overload debuted on July 12, 2020 at Woodbine and finished sixth. One race later, he broke his maiden courtesy of a 37-1 upset at 6 ½-furlongs over the Woodbine Tapeta.

He paid $17.40 for Sunday's win.
