Jockey Of The Week: Umberto Rispoli Wins Three Stakes at Santa Anita Saturday

Umberto Rispoli had a very good day Saturday at Santa Anita with three stakes wins including a graded stakes. Those victories earned Rispoli Jockey of the Week for Oct. 24 through Oct. 30. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, honors jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Riding for trainer Phil D'Amato in the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes, Rispoli was aboard Going Global in her career finale. Off as the overwhelming favorite in the field of six, Going Global saved ground in third while 2 1/2 lengths off her stablemate Burgoo Alley. Going Global got on even terms at the top of the lane and burst clear to post a 1 1/2-length win in 1:33.85 for one mile on the turf.

“I was on the right horse,” said Rispoli. “She is very easy to ride. Once I hit the turn to go home, I just pressed the button and she did the rest. I feel so privileged and grateful to have been on her for her final race.”

Northern California trainer Steve Specht gave a leg up to Rispoli on Passarando in the Golden State Juvenile. Passarando bobbled slightly out of the gate, taking position behind three dueling leaders. Riding Passarando for the first time, Rispoli angled three wide into the lane for racing room and overtook heavily favored Giver Not a Taker in deep stretch to post a length victory in 1:24.18 for seven furlongs.

“Going to the three-eighths pole, I saw an opening between the horses ahead of me, said Rispoli. “I'm sure my horse was probably tired, but once I took him off the rail, brought him into the middle of the track, and switched leads, he did the rest.”

Rispoli and D'Amato then registered a stakes double on Amy C in the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes. Off as the second choice in the field of 10, Amy C wore down race favorite and stablemate, Connie Swingle to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:12.36 for 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

“It was pretty easy,” said Rispoli. “Around the far turn I felt I had a nice horse underneath, and I was just waiting until I crossed the chute to send her and I knew with that pace it was a 'come to me', so the filly did the rest.”

Rispoli will have the chance to display his riding skills on the turf Friday at Keeneland in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and on Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Rispoli's statistics for the week included six wins and $430,544 in total purses.

Other contenders for Jockey of the Week were Tyler Gaffalione with a graded stakes win at Keeneland, Deshawn Parker with three stakes wins at Horseshoe Indianapolis, Joel Rosario with three stakes wins, and Luis Saez who won his second leading rider title at Keeneland.

Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit Launches Website With Educational Materials

The Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU), which was established by Drug Free Sport International to administer the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program, announced Wednesday that it has formally launched its website at hiwu.org.

The current version of the website features a section dedicated to educational resources about the components of the ADMC Program. The content, which will include bilingual materials, will increase in the weeks and months ahead to assist all stakeholders in the Thoroughbred industry in advance of the ADMC Program's implementation on Jan. 1, 2023, and beyond. Future website updates will introduce a Prohibited Substances database as a reference tool and a searchable list of sanctions imposed on Covered Persons or Covered Horses for ADMC Program violations.

Viewers will also find information about HIWU's team and responsibilities as the enforcement agency for HISA's ADMC Program, answers to frequently asked questions about HIWU, recent HIWU news, and a link to the full ADMC Program regulations submitted for approval to the Federal Trade Commission.

“Our goal is for the HIWU website to serve as a comprehensive and dynamic resource for the Thoroughbred industry so that everyone feels prepared for the ADMC Program, and we are excited for its further expansion,” said Ben Mosier, executive director of HIWU.

In addition to the website, interested parties can now keep up with HIWU via FacebookTwitter, and LinkedIn. Questions may be submitted to info@hiwu.org.

Higher Handle Leads To Increased Purses, Five New Stakes At Parx In November

The Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (PTHA), in collaboration with Parx Racing, has announced several purse increases starting in the November condition book, along with the addition of five new stakes races in late November, including three for Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 23, and two on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

“The increased purses and additional stakes races are the result of higher than forecast handle throughout the year, including the record-breaking handle for Pennsylvania Derby Day,” said Jeff Matty, Executive Director of the PTHA. “Increasing these purses, especially our state-bred purses, will allow us to build on this momentum heading into 2023 while at the same time being very competitive with surrounding state-bred programs. The breeding side of our business has a major impact on the state's agricultural economy and we want to do our part to encourage people to breed, foal, and race Pennsylvania-bred foals.”

This year, the stakes program at Parx added PA-bred and PA-Sired races in coordination with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA). In addition, Parx Director of Racing David Osojnak and his team's open stakes at Parx attracted multiple Grade 1 winners, both in open divisions as well as filly and mares.

“We are fortunate to have very good horses, trainers, owners, and jockeys here at Parx,” David Osojnak, Parx Director of Racing/Racing Secretary. “The quality of our horse population and our racing has gotten better every year since I have been here and our handle numbers reflect this steady improvement. It's a no-brainer to increase our purses for our higher-class races and to build on our stakes program.”

“The breeders are grateful to Parx Racing and the PTHA for moving the restricted purses up starting on November 1st. After a very successful Pa-Bred / Pa-Sired Stakes program this year, these purse increases are just another added incentive to breed and race in Pennsylvania,” said Brian Sanfratello, Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association.

The purse increases are for the Open and PA Bred Maiden Special Weight and Allowance races. They started with Parx's Nov. 1 card.

The five additional stakes races scheduled for November include:
