Coolmore Again as Gamine Takes Lead at Fasig-Tipton

Brilliant champion and 'TDN Rising Star' Gamine (Into Mischief) looks poised to top her second Fasig-Tipton Sale after sparking a furious bidding war in Newtown Paddocks just after 9:00 p.m. Sunday night. When the dust had settled, Coolmore's MV Magnier–who has been extremely active all night–was holding the $7-million ticket to take home the $1.8-million FTMMAY '19 topper and five-time Grade I winner. Gamine was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, agent as hip 289. The Michael Lund Petersen colorbearer was offered carrying her first foal by Quality Road.

Ramon Vazquez Wins First Santa Anita Riding Title; Peter Miller Tops Among Trainers

Jockey Ramon Vazquez, a 38-year-old native of Puerto Rico, cemented his status as Santa Anita's Autumn Meet leading rider by winning two races early on Sunday's 10-race program and finished with 25 victories through the 18-day stand, five better than runner-up Juan Hernandez.

Recently arrived this past March, Vazquez, who had been a mainstay at tracks such as Prairie Meadows in Iowa and Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., took his first-ever Santa Anita title on Santa Anita's Autumn Meet closing day.

Miller, a 56-year-old native Angelino who bases primarily out of San Luis Rey Downs Training Center, collected his fourth Autumn Meet title and his sixth overall Santa Anita training crown.

“I'm grateful to be here and to the owners and trainers who have supported me,” said Vazquez.  “I'm blessed, this is big for me because not everybody who comes to ride at Santa Anita has made it (leading jockey) in such a short time.  I'm so blessed and I thank everybody who has supported me.”

Vazquez, who is represented by agent Bill Castle, had four stakes wins, two back of Umberto Rispoli.

“We're very excited to win another title at Santa Anita,” said Miller.  “It's always a great accomplishment to win there.  It's a team effort.  The people in the barn did a great job all meet and really special thanks to my owners for being just the best, the most loyal group of owners a guy could ask for.

“Looking ahead, we'll have a small string at Oaklawn but our main focus will be at Santa Anita.”

Live racing will return to The Great Race Place with opening day for the 2022-'23 Winter Spring Meet on Monday, Dec. 26.  For additional information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Pope Buys Out Partners For Kentucky Oaks Winner Shedaresthedevil

Shedaresthedevil, winner of the 2020 Kentucky Oaks, will join the elite broodmare band of Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm after Pope bought out her partners with a final bid of $5 million on Sunday at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Pope initially bought into a partnership that included Flurry Racing Stables and Qatar Racing during last year's November Sale, when the daughter of Daredevil went through the ring for the same price. Hunter Valley Farm consigned her at both sales, as agent.

The 5-year-old won 10 of 21 starts for earnings of $2,777,458.

After a Grade 2-placed juvenile campaign, Shedaresthedevil established herself as a top Kentucky Oaks contender with a victory in the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes. When COVID-19 pushed the 2020 Oaks back to September, Shedaresthedevil kept her stock high over the summer with a win in the G3 Indiana Oaks.

In the Kentucky Oaks, Shedaresthedevil battled with Gamine in the early goings, then fended off future Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver to win by 1 1/2 lengths for trainer Brad Cox. Her time of 1:48.28 over 1 1/8 miles was the fastest in Kentucky Oaks history.

In 2021, Shedaresthedevil established herself as one of the top older females in the country, with scores in the G1 La Troienne Stakes and G1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, along with wins in the G2 Azeri Stakes and G3 Locust Grove Stakes. Returning to the races in 2022 after gaining Pope as a partner, Shedaresthedevil's season was highlighted by a win in the G2 Fleur De Lis Stakes in July at Churchill Downs.

After the fall of the hammer, Pope listed record-setting young sire Gun Runner and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Flightline as potential partners for the mare's first mating.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Shedaresthedevil is out of the winning Congrats mare Starship Warpspeed. She is a half-sister to Grade 3-placed Mojovation.
