Pope Gets in on the Action at KEENOV

Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm was active, per usual, at the top of the market at Fasig-Tipton November Sunday evening, and Pope picked up right where she left off Monday across town at Keeneland. She went to $2.3 million to pick up 5-year-old racing or broodmare prospect Four Graces (Majesticperfection), a MGSW/GISP half-sister to MGSW young sire McCraken from a deep Whitham family. The near $500,000 earner was consigned by Denali Stud has hip 192.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Winner Malathaat Officially Retired; No Mating Plans Yet Decided

Winner by a nose of this year's dramatic edition of the Breeders' Cup Distaff, 4-year-old Curlin filly Malathaat has officially been retired to Shadwell's broodmare band, reports bloodhorse.com. No mating plans have yet been determined for the $3.7 million earner.

“We went out on a high,” farm manager Gregory Clarke told bloodhorse.com. “She'll go to a proven, top stallion.”

Malathaat was a $1.05 million yearling purchase at the Keeneland September sale, one of the last purchases made by the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and raced by his daughter, Sheikha Hissa Hamdan. She is out of the Grade 1-winning A.P. Indy mare Dreaming of Julia, bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Stables.

The top wins on her resume include the G1 Ashland, G1 Kentucky Oaks, G1 Alabama, G1 Personal Ensign, G1 Spinster, and the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff. Overall, Malathaat won 10 of her 14 career starts for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. She was named champion 3-year-old filly in 2021, and appears likely to earn Older Dirt Female Eclipse Award for 2022.

“She's just been a gift to us from the get-go,” Clarke told bloodhorse.com. “She kept the flag flying for us at a low time after Sheikh Hamdan passed. It was really wonderful, what she accomplished. He wasn't there himself in person, but I'm sure he was looking down. It was a great experience.”

Nest’s Dam to Coolmore

Marion Ravenwood (A.P. Indy), the stakes-winning dam of expected champion 3-year-old filly Nest (Curlin), GISW Idol (Curlin) and this year's stakes-winning juvenile Lost Ark (Violence) was unsurprisingly popular in the Keeneland November sales ring Monday, with Coolmore's MV Magnier coming out on top to secure the 14-year-old for $2.6 million. Hip 187, in foal to Curlin, was consigned by the Lyster family's Ashview Farm. Ashview and Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stables paid $400,000 for Marion Ravenwood at the 2017 renewal of this sale while she was carrying eventual MSP Dr Jack (Pioneerof the Nile).

Economic Indicators: Wagering Trends Down In October, But Year-To-Date Figures Nearly On Par

Equibase, North American racing's official database, has released its October statistics for the industry's economic indicators, including field size, wagering, and other data, along with 2019 and 2020 comparables. The 2019 data is included as a pre-COVID-19 comparison.

Equibase is continuing to provide monthly reporting of its Economic Indicators Advisories as a service to the industry and in consideration of the economic changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Advisory is typically disseminated on a quarterly basis to provide key metrics used to measure racing's performance throughout the year.

Both total wagering and average wagering per race day trended down from October of 2021 to October of 2022, the former by about five percent, and the latter by nearly six. However, year-to-date figures for the first 10 months of the year show 2022 to be nearly on par with 2021, with just a 0.02 percent drop in total wagering and 0.72 percent decline in average wagering per race day.

Looking at numbers from 2020, wagering is up 12.59 percent through the first 10 months of the year in 2022, but average daily wagering is down 9.77 percent. Those figures are compatible with the 24.78 percent increase in race days and 8.16 percent drop in field size.

Compared to 2019, prior to the pandemic, wagering through the first 10 months of the year is up 11.46 percent, with average wagering per race day showing an increase of 20.67 percent.

The strongest category remains purses, which were up 12.42 percent in October of 2022, and up 11.62 percent through the first 10 months of 2022. Compared to 2020, purses through the first 10 months of the year are up over 50 percent; average purses per race day are up 22.77 percent.
