Vekoma Weanling Back On Top, Munnings Filly Shares Top Spot

During Tuesday's session of the Keeneland November Sale, a pair of horses secured final bids of $130,000 to top the ninth day of selling. After a pair of weanlings by Vekoma led sessions earlier in the week, a colt by the Spendthrift stallion once again headed the leaderboard Tuesday. Christina R. Jelm, agent, purchased Hip 3178, who was consigned by Eaton Sales, agent. The grey is out of Gypsy Grey (Giant's Causeway), and from the family of Grade I/Group 1 winners Chief Honcho and Poet's Voice and Grade III-winner Gemswick Park.

Hip 3369, a winning-daughter of Munnings, equaled the mark yesterday. Purchased by River Bend, Souper Munnings was consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Live Oak Stud. Out of the winning Mylitta (Sky Mesa), the filly is a half-sister to Grade III-placed Judge Davis. She hails from the family of Canadian Horse of the Year Alywow and graded winners Century City and Wow Me Free.

Eaton Sales also consigned the dam of Tuesday's weanling topper–Gypsy Grey–in foal to Midshipman. The second highest-priced mare of the session, Hip 3177 was purchased by Kildare Stud Farm for $90,000. The 8-year-old is out of SP Sheraton Park (Cozzene).

The highest-priced weanling filly Tuesday was Hip 3358, a daughter of Instagrand, whose is represented by his first crop of weanlings this year. Offered by Greenfield Farms, agent for Sierra Farm, the Feb. 26 foal was purchased by Taproot Bloodstock, agent.

With one session remaining, 2,091 horses have sold for $208,879,800, up 7.41% from last year's $194,463,100 for the comparable period when 2,239 horses sold. The average of $99,895 is 15.02% higher than last year's $86,653, and median of $40,000 equals last year.

During Tuesday's session, a total of 265 horses sold for $3,183,200, a 19.02% decrease from 2021, when total receipts were $3,931,400 for 289 horses. The average was $12,012 and the median $7,000, a 22.22% drop from last year's $9,000.

‘This Time, I Did It On My Own’: Kent Desormeaux Back In The Saddle At Del Mar

Jockey Kent Desormeaux will return to the saddle at Del Mar this Friday, reports the Daily Racing Form, named on his first two mounts since Jan. 23. Desormeaux recently completed a voluntary rehabilitation program.

“I'm appreciative and thankful to be able to return,” Desormeaux told DRF. “This difference is my other previous occasions were court-ordered rehabs. This time, I did it on my own. This time, I want to be healthy. This time, I want it.”

Desormeaux, 53, has been absent from racing since a January domestic abuse arrest in Louisiana. His license has been suspended since March, when he failed to appear at at California Horse Racing Board hearing with stewards on a disorderly conduct charge that took place at an RV park on the grounds of Del Mar racetrack last Nov. 23.

The latter has been resolved via a 60-day suspension, served Aug. 8 through Oct. 6. In addition, that ruling also states the Hall of Fame rider and three-time Eclipse Award winner “shall sign a testing agreement with the California Horse Racing Board while licensed in California and is ordered to be evaluated by the Winners Foundation and shall abide by the recommendations of that organization. Failure to do so may result in a suspension of his license.”

Desormeaux has admitted to alcohol problems in the past and the two incidents that led to the disorderly conduct complaints reportedly involved alcohol. The first incident, which occurred in 2020, led to a 15-day suspension and his ejection from Del Mar property.

The owners of Santa Anita excluded Desormeaux from its premises following his January arrest; Desormeaux has met with 1/ST officials and his status at Santa Anita for the winter meet remains pending.

Far Mo Power Connections Sue Over Decision To Deny Appeal Of Parx Dirt Mile DQ

Joseph Sutton and Louis Linder Jr., respective owner and trainer of Far Mo Power, have sued Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission executive Thomas Chuckas over his decision to deny an appeal hearing to reconsider the horse's disqualification in a Sept. 24, 2022, stakes at Parx Racing.

Far Mo Power, a 12-1 longshot, finished first by a neck in the $200,000 Parx Dirt Mile Stakes on the Pennsylvania Derby day card at the Bensalem, Pa., track, but was disqualified by stewards for interfering with Mind Control, the 3-5 favorite owned by Red Oak Stable and Madaket Stables and trained by Todd Pletcher. The Equibase chart shows that the two horses were engaged in a tight battle from the quarter pole to the wire, with Mind Control – ridden by John Velazquez – putting his head in front at the furlong pole and Far Mo Power rallying to prevail after drifting out and brushing his rival when hit left-handed with the whip by jockey Dexter Haddock.

According to the complaint filed by attorney Alan Pincus in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Linder “sought advice from the horseman's group at Parx as to how to appeal pro se and was given a form prepared by the commission for such appeals.”

The form was notarized on Sept. 26 and submitted to the commission.

On Sept. 30, Chuckas, director of the Pennsylvania commission's Thoroughbred bureau, issued an order denying a hearing based on the reasoning that Linder “failed to set forth in numbered paragraphs a concise statement of all the factual and legal grounds upon which the hearing was requested.”

The appeal form, on Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission letterhead, had four lines available for the appellant to state reasons for the appeal and suggested a blank paper may be used if more space is needed. Linder wrote “No Foul Occurred” in the space asking for reasons for filing the appeal

“This should appear concise to anyone,” the lawsuit states.

The complaint adds that, “Upon information and belief the commission has never rejected a hearing from anyone who used the commission's form. Upon information and belief the commission has never rejected a hearing from anyone who failed to use numbered paragraphs.

“In all meaningful ways Linder's appeal conformed to the relevant rules,” the complaint added, then provided information about a Sept. 29 ruling concerning trainer Juan Vazquez.

In that ruling, the complaint said, “The commission stated in a footnote 'Appellant's appeal failed to comply with 179.7(a) (1) of the commission's regulations in that appellant failed to set forth a statement of all the factual and legal grounds upon which the hearing is requested. Nevertheless, in the interest of fairness, the commission granted the appeal in this matter and conducted a de novo hearing.'”

The complaint then added, “Thus somewhere between Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 the interests of fairness disappeared from the commission and were not considered in denying plaintiffs' appeal.”

Chuckas' actions were called “arbitrary and capricious and designed with the specific intent to deprive plaintiffs of their Due Process Rights.”

Plaintiffs are seeking a ruling to the effect that Chuckas deprived them of Due Process, an order requiring the commission to provide a hearing, and costs and disbursements including attorney's fees.

Group 1-Winning Juvenile Filly The Platinum Queen Added To Tattersalls December Mares Sale

Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp winner The Platinum Queen has been added as a wildcard entry to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and will be offered as lot 1924B on Tuesday, Nov. 29. She is the first Group 1 winning filly to be offered as a two-year-old at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale this century.

The Platinum Queen no stranger to rewriting the record books, becoming the first 2-year-old to win the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp since the great SIGY in 1978 with a tremendously game effort for trainer Richard Fahey and owners Middleham Park Racing who purchased her at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale from Tally-Ho Stud.

An impressive winner on debut, The Platinum Queen blitzed the field by four lengths in the Alice Keppel Fillies' Conditions Stakes at Glorious Goodwood to break the juvenile course record in a time faster than the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes held earlier on the card. She then put up an excellent performance in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes on her next start when second to Highfield Princess, a three-time Group 1 winner this year and Cartier Champion Sprinter, with Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint runner up Emraaty Ana in third. A valiant second by a short head on soft ground in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes followed before her tour de force in the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye, a race won in recent years by outstanding sprinters Bataash and Marsha.

Commenting on The Platinum Queen, Tom Palin of Middleham Park Racing said: “The Platinum Queen's breeze at the Rowley Mile back in April was unbelievably impressive and we were determined to buy her. She has been an absolute superstar for Middleham Park Racing ever since, taking us everywhere including Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, the Ebor Meeting at York and ultimately to Group 1 glory in the Abbaye on Arc day at Longchamp where she achieved something which has not been done in more than 40 years. The Platinum Queen really is a special filly, a credit to Richard Fahey and the whole team at Musley Bank, and she has the physical scope to develop into an equally outstanding three year old.”

Bred by Tally-Ho Stud, The Platinum Queen is a graduate of the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale and is out of the Kodiac mare Thrilled, who herself sold for 460,000 guineas at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. A half-sister to high class two-year-old The Gold Cheongsam, Thrilled is out of the Listed runner up Fuerta Ventura from the excellent Littleton Stud family of Arabian Queen and Barshiba.

The Platinum Queen is from the second crop of Tally-Ho Stud's European Champion first season sire Cotai Glory, a Group 3 winner as a 2-year-old and top class Group winning older sprinter who was beaten only a neck when runner up in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at four and placed in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at five. He is by brilliant Australian sprinter and Champion sire Exceed And Excel, a proven Group 1 broodmare sire in both hemispheres.

The Tattersalls December Mares Sale will take place from Monday, Nov. 28, to Thursday, Dec. 1, with the new Sceptre Sessions held on Monday, Nov. 28, and Tuesday, Nov. 29. The catalogue for the Tattersalls December Mares Sale can be viewed online at www.tattersalls.com and is available from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives.
